Broken Dog II

April 28, 2007

Meet Charlie!

Charlie was found wandering out in a field... A family had watched what they thought was a plastic grocery bag blowing around... after 2 days, they went out to find a little white dog.

They searched high and low for his owner - they checked ads in the paper, had the little guy checked for a microchip, and called the local police and humane society. No one was looking for a little white male Lhasa Apso!

The woman who found him was overheard at work talking about to not being able to keep him -- wishing she didn't have to take him to the Humane Society. As luck would have it, the right ears were listening!

ARVSS to the rescue! The little guy was brought into the rescue and a wonderful loving home. It was quickly observed that he didn't understand surfaces such as carpet, a wooden deck or even grass! As he was examined, it was discovered that most of his teeth were broken off on one side. This is typical of a dog kept in a crate. As he had not been neutered, the best guess is that he had escaped from a puppy mill.

The little guy was quickly named Charlie, given shots and taken in for a Rabies vaccine so that he could have a very badly needed grooming! He was full of mats and had a "lump" on his forehead.

Poor Charlie!

The cute little fluff ball went in for grooming. He was so full of thick mats, there was nothing to do but shave him. It was discovered that one ear is deformed, probably from repeated ear infections. Charlie's mats were so bad, he could not move his head normally. From the groomer, he went over to see Dr. Trepel to be neutered and to have his "lump" looked at.

Surgery went well - very routine. The lump was nothing to be worried about... Then the trouble began! Charlie was settled in to recover from the surgery - and he started bleeding from both his head and his groin. It just wouldn't stop! He was given two blood transfusions and went home with a vet tech for the night so that he could be watched closely.

The cause of the bleeding is not known... Charlie is being given Vitamin K, and that seems to be working. We'll have to wait 100 days before blood tests can be run. Since he was tranfused, it'll take that long for the new blood to become "his own."

Charlie is at home with his foster family... taking it easy, taking his Vitamin K, visiting Dr. Trepel frequently, and learning about how much we all care about him!

05/11/07: Charlie is on the mend! He gets two gel caps a day of Vitamin K for clotting... his hair is starting to grow back, and the bruising is fading. He's turning from a black and blue dog to a little white fellow! He's doing well with the three other dogs in the house. He completes the range of sizes in the home from XL to small!

Yes, Charlie's eyes are goopy - but he's been through enough so far and that can wait... It appears that he has problems with one of his eyes - and that will be checked out once he's over the current health concerns.

Charlie's a bit shy, but is starting to come out of his shell. He's house broken and seems to enjoy exploring the back yard.

A Note from "Mom"

TIME DOES HEAL: When Charlie came to us in April (on my birthday), he did not understand concepts taken for granted as normal by most dogs (and humans alike) such as the wind blowing in your hair, walking on carpet or grass, freely running outside, a loving touch, a good ear scratch, good food and a comfy place to sleep,

Charlie is completely healed from his surgical ordeal, and his fur is growing back rapidly. We are still unsure about his blood clotting issues, but he does not seem to bruise as easily as he did. He now LOVES to run in the backyard and has NO fear of anything.

He chases me around the yard as I mow on the tractor, making him a green and white dog. He rolls under the berry tree, making him a purple and white dog. Charlie plays with his sisters and he even has an imaginary friend to play with when no one else is interested.

Charlie is over-joyed to see me, even if I have been "missing" for 3 minutes. I am not allowed to lay of the sofa alone, he MUST join me, and in exchange he tolerates me giving him a bath (remember the green/purple dog thing).

Charlie seems to be comfortable here so it only seemed fair that he be a permanent part of our home. He turned out to be the best birthday gift a human could ask for.

Tail a'waggin... Happy Ever After!

Charlie!
