Meet the Katrina Kids!
Two Katrina Babies These sweeties returned from our first trip to Mississippi to rescue victims of Hurricane Katrina. They will remain in foster homes until October 22. If they have not been claimed by their owners by then, they will be available for adoption. Read all about them with information from the ones who know them best, their foster parents!

PLEASE NOTE: Due to medical issues, not all animals will be available for immediate adoption on October 22. Please watch our adoptable pet listings in Petfinder - they will be listed there as soon as possible!

Hazel
Hazel
Hazel
Hooray For Hazel! She is the sweetest dog I have ever known, so loving and so playful. She loves to cuddle and, if able, will curl up in your lap and chew on her toy. She's also doing very well with potty training, going to the door to let me know she needs to go out. As far as being in the crate, she doesn't make a sound. She (most of the time) will crawl right in, curl up and sleep. She has been very responsive to everyone she's been introduced to, and warms right up to people.

As for other animals, she loves playing with Cosmo, my neighbors big German Shepherd, and as only seen a cat in passing (which sparked the first bark I've heard from her).

All in all, she needs a family that is willing and able to give her an enormous amount of love, as she is more than willing to give it back. They also need to have the time to take her outside and play with her, throw her toys around the house and just give her lots of attention. So far she's doing well in the crate for a standard 8 hour day, but having someone come home at lunch to let her out would be ideal.

Homer
Homer - available for adoption now!
Crooks
Crooks
Homer and Crooks are doing very well. Homer is eating the dry low-cal cat food and actually prefers it to the kitten chow, which is great, but suprising. He has a reserved, regal manner about him, which prompted us to title him HRH Homer. He is getting along well with our other cats and is not bothered by and ignores the dogs. He loves to petted and comes over for attention whenever we come into the room, but is not overly aggressive about it.

Crooks, on the other hand, is immediately onto whoever comes in and has a purr that can practically be heard in the next room. We have let Crooks and Homer socialize a few times with two of our other cats in the room where they are kept and have started to let them out into the rest of the house for a short time to get the used to a bigger environment. All the cats are getting along well with each other. Crooks isn't too sure about the dogs, but I think his tolerance of them will grow as he becomes more familiar with them. No health problems that we can see.

Annie
Annie
Meet Annie!  We have named our girl, "Annie" (yes, as in orphan annie) and she is beginning to respond to it. Things are going okay so far. She doesn't really get along with our dog...I don't think that Annie appreciates our dog's 'youthful energy' i.e. hyperactivity. They do not fight, per se, Annie just bares her teeth and growls a bit when our dog gets too close. I think that this is due, in large part, to the ordeal that she has had to go through. We are hoping that once we pass this weekend (two full days together) this will change. People-wise she is super-friendly. Very cuddly, listens well. Seems good with kids also... but we haven't had her around many kids for very long. Health-wise she is doing okay. She is still coughing, thought that does seem to be lessening somewhat. She eats okay...not as much as we thought she would (being starved and all...) but about 1 can of dog food a day. She is starting to 'act' more healthy and her ears are starting to perk up a bit. She goes for walks with us and is really getting back the Jack Russell Terrier 'strut'. We have also caught her playing and jumping around a few times. Yesterday she was running. We think that she was a house dog because she is pretty much house trained. When we go outside she goes potty 'on command' and has only had a few accidents in the house. We crate her at night and she sleeps through the night and the crate is dry in the morning. She also walks on leash like a dream. Heels at your side, never pulls and wants to 'meet' everyone she passes. She also recognizes "no". She is a very, very quiet dog. We have only heard her bark a few times. My husband has been taking her to work with him and he says that she doesn't make a peep all day long. We are going to try to wean her into staying home during the day, in her crate.

Sandy

Midnight
Midnight -- ADOPTED
These two puppies were surrendered by their owners:

Sandy & Midnight.... Midnight and Sandy have been wonderful; we are enjoying them so much. My kids get along great with them. Within 24 hours they were able to figure out our stairs, my 4 year old Westie Terrier (Tasha) wasn't too happy about it. But she is letting them know. We are letting Tasha have her space. They are eating very good and drinking lots of water. I think Midnight's hair on her tummy in coming back in? Not sure though.

The two are pretty good about going into the kennel at night and in the morning when I leave for work. They whine a little, but I expected that. They are also doing pretty good about potting outside, not always but when we take them out they always go. They are playing great together. They are great little girls and they are so loving. They like to sleep right next to you on the couch if we are sitting or lying down. It is great having puppies again.

Clint

Bella
Bella
Bella

Oh, Clint! The geriatric poodle is blind, deaf and turns circles to the left. He had four teeth when he arrived, but after a trip to the vet, he is down to two... and is now neutered! He can still manage to get around. He found the water bowl himself, and he discovered in a nanosecond that my dog Fred's snuggle bed is far better than the cheapie bed I bought for him this afternoon. He is about 10 pounds, and has a very thin apricot coat, probably about 10 years old. Clint is determined to explore when he's awake.

Look at Bella! Bella has some Jack Russell in her, but she is a far stretch from a purebred. You can see some corgi in her face, but who knows what else. She's about 15 to 18 pounds. She has a skin condition of some sort and sounds like she has kennel cough, or something respiratory.

She is a sweetheart and loves to kiss, flops over for belly rubs. She looks young, has good clean teeth (all of them, thankfully). I named her Bella because she has such a pretty face. She snuggles nicely.

Momma Katrina & 7 Hurricanes
Momma Katrina & Seven Hurricanes
Here is "Mama Katrina and the 7 Hurricanes." We're trying to fatten up the Mama. She's pretty skinny. The babies' eyes aren't open yet, but they will be any time now. The runt, who we were told to keep an eye on, pushes all the other kitten's out of the way to eat. Don't have to worry about her!

Sunny
Sunny
Babies!
Sunny's Seven Babies
Sunny and babies are doing very well. They are growing in leaps and bounds, and seem to have insatiable appetities. I have a feeling that their father was quite a bit larger than Sunny, as there are some big boys in our gang! I began trying to give them "slurpies" yesterday (a mixture of formula and canned food) and they seem to want to eat it, but are still having difficulty mastering anything but sucking. The "big boys" licked a bit though, and they are the ones that are draining Mom's milk the fastest. I don't think Sunny will be able to keep up with the demand as they grow, as she is such a small girl, and still quite thin.

I am beginning to see changes daily now--the pups are now beginning to play with one another and having longer awake periods. A few of them have barked, and one even "howled" today! The only name I have so far is for the smallest --I call her Tinkerbell. They are beginning to show personalities--and I already have some favorites.

Sunny has learned "sit" and "down" and comes eagarly when called. She is also always hungry, and it's obvious she has fended for herself for a while. She has bonded with me and follows me everywhere.

Sadie
Sadie
This is Sadie. She's very sweet and affectionate. She gets along well with my mellow golden. They played together tonight for about 30 minutes--chasing, mouthing and wrestling. Sadie was tired as she did most of the wrestling while Jessie laid on the floor and did lots of mouthing. They also like to play tug and she fetches a tennis ball. She jumps up when excited and when meeting and greeting, but is learning "off" and calms down fairly quickly. I think she will be easy to train. She appears to be housebroken as she has not had any accidents in the house, but she doesn't yet indicate that she needs to go out. She wakes me up in the middle of the night crying, and always urinates when she gets outside. She cries for several minutes when put in her crate, but stops when ignored. No problems with car sickness, just some minor crying in the crate. She still scratches and chews herself frequently due to her skin problems. She has attempted to chew on furniture, but stopped when I told her "no." Considering all that she has been through, she is a happy pup and has adjusted remarkably well.

Brice
Brice
Tiff's Kittens
Kittens at Brice's House!
What a make-over! Brice looks like a whole new dog! He seems to be thriving in his foster home. His foster parents brag that he knows how to sit, shake, stay, laydown. The jury is still out on his breed... but he's a cutie-pie!

The five little kittens are very energetic, and love to play. The little black one is the most cuddley. They all are doing very well.

Ranger
Ranger
When I picked Ranger up, he was very timid. As he realized that I was there to love him, he started to come out of his shell. He was very excited to go for a ride in the truck. When we got home, I had him on his lead, and had my other dog kenneled. He sniffed through the house, then ate some supper. Then Ranger got to meet Karlee! I had them both on leashes, but they were soon off their leashes. Ranger was licking Karlee's ears, and trying to put a leg up on her back. She, being 11 months old, just wanted to play. She started running in circles around the living room, and soon Ranger followed her! He sure slept good that night! Ranger has adjusted well to our family. He doesn't like his kennel too much, but he will get used to it. Let me know if there's anything else you want to know. His kennel cough is getting a little better.

The Babies
The "babies", as I call them, are doing great and are full of energy. We took the two litters of kittens (5 altogether). Their personalities are already so developed. Shivers, named because she was shivering after her bath, is sweet and playful. Freezie (who also was very cold after bath time) is also a sweetie. Isabella is quiet and kind, the smallest of the bunch. She holds her own with the others, though. Gumdrop is the roughest and wildest while her sibiling, Randy, is the calmest and the most cuddly.

They love playing together and with us. Emily, who is almost eleven, is doing a great job helping to take care of them. She is cleaning out the litter box, feeding them, helping me give them medicine and giving them lots of love. The babies know her voice and turn when they hear her talking. We have set up a log system to keep track of their bathroom and eating behaviors as well as anything unusual we see. We are so grateful that you all put in this effort to save these animals. I hope you have recovered and are well rested. They appear to be very happy and strong.
