Who We Are

The Bedford Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1994 and dedicated to eliminating the overpopulation of cats and dogs in Bedford County through education, spay/neuter programs, and companion animal adoptions.  WE ARE NOT the Bedford County or City Shelter.  Our adoptable pets live in volunteer foster homes where they receive the care and attention they deserve while awaiting a permanent home.

We have done and are currently doing the following things in Bedford County:

Mary Beverley

 President

Mary joined BHS, Inc in 1997 and served as secretary/treasurer and vice president for several years.  She is employed by the Moneta YMCA as the branch director and is very active in the community.  She is a director for the Bedford Kiwanis club, a volunteer with CASA as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children and is the "team mom" for the Bedford Barracudas Swim Team!

Mary has a wonderful family which includes her husband, Keith, and two sons, Travis and Brice.  In her spare time she enjoys reading, swimming, horseback riding and spending time with her family and house full of pets!

Annette Miller

Secretary/Treasurer

Annette joined BHS in 1996 and has served continuously in a variety of positions.  She routinely fosters dogs and cats for BHS and has helped countless animals find new homes.  In addition to her duties with BHS, Annette owns the Canine Bath Shop, in Bedford, VA and provides foster homes for Collies through Collie Rescue.

Annette is a member of the Collie Club of America and an active volunteer for the Collie Health Foundation. She lives in Bedford with Ed, her husband of 44 years.  As if Annette was not busy enough, she also has two children, three grandchildren, and four collies!

Dr. Leslie M. Hudson

Dr. Leslie Hudson joined the BHS Board of Directors after working with BHS members on the formation of B-CART (Bedford Community Animal Response Team). She has been a Bedford County VA resident since 1995 and has practiced veterinary medicine in the Lynchburg area since 1990. Originally from Mississippi, Leslie moved from a mixed animal practice near Harrisonburg to work at the Animal Emergency Clinic in Lynchburg. She left the AEC after 10 years to work as a "relief veterinarian" meaning she fills in for local doctors on leave or needing a day off. She & her husband Vince live on a small farm with cattle, chickens, and  an emu named "Duck" as well as dogs "Chip," "Alfie," "The Rodent," & "Queenie" & cats "Willow," "Twiggy," & "Elora" (now 20 years old!). Leslie also usually has a foster pet or 10. She became very interested in disaster planning & response after working on the Gulf Coast at 3 different shelters after Hurricanes Katrina & Rita. More recently Leslie has been part of the emergency evacuation of some nearby puppy mills as part of her role on emergency response teams for United Animal Nations, Humane Society of US, & Best Friends Animal Society.
