Spay/Neuter Program

The Bedford Humane Society provides funding for spay/neuter surgery to income-qualifying Bedford County/City residents through scheduled animal transports to the nearby South Central Spay Neuter Clinic in Evington.

You must make an appointment by completing the Spay/Neuter Appointment Application (below).

There are three price levels, based on your income.  PROOF OF INCOME IS REQUIRED for the lower levels- a copy of your Federal Income Tax  Return or "Notice of Action" letter showing proof of income eligibility for Public Assistance.

1) Low cost vaccinations are also available for pets undergoing surgery only

2)You must be able to drop off your pet at Bedford Tractor Supply by 7:00 am in the morning.

3)You must be able to pick up your pet the following day between Noon and 1pm.

Your pet will spend the night at the clinic, recovering from the surgery and anesthesia and will be checked in the morning before being returned to you.  However, be advised that there are no veterinary staff present overnight at the clinic.

4)PROOF OF RABIES IS REQUIRED BY LAW.  Rabies vaccinations are required by Virginia law. You MUST either purchase a vaccination for your animal when it has surgery  or bring a current rabies certificate with you to your appointment.

5) Adult animals (over 4 months old) must not have any food or water after 9pm the night before the surgery. Animals younger than 4 months old may have food and water.  This is very important for the safety of the animal.

6)Your animal will receive a small tattoo on his/her underside to show that he/she has been sterilized.

7)Animals over 8 years old should be seen by a their regular vet.  We would require a pre-anesthetic blood panel from your regular vet before performing surgery on older animals.

Feral (Wild) cat resources:

Like many people, you may be concerned about wild cats, also known as 'ferals', in your neighborhood.  Are they breeding and adding to the pet overpopulation crisis?  We loan traps for the purpose of humanely capturing these cats so that they can be spay/neutered and returned to their outdoor homes.  Feral cats can be brought to the shuttle without an appointment.

To borrow a trap:

Please call Sandy at 540-266-2321

A $50 deposit is required

In addition, Feral Cat Clinics are held at Angels of Assisi in Roanoke on the third Sunday of each month. All cats must have a reservation in the clinic. For information please visit their website at Alley Cat Angels Feral Cat Coalition.

Neighborhood Spay/Neuter Events:

Does your neighborhood have 15 or more animals who need to be spay/neutered?  Let us bring the van to you!  Financial assistance is available.
