China This little 5 1/2 month old puppy, “China”, spent about the last two months in a pound in southwest Virginia. No one seemed to want her. Last Tuesday, May 13, 2003 she was scheduled to be put down at 3:00 P.M. At 12:00 noon that very day a young woman in Hanover County saw her on the pound's web site and called requesting to adopt her. Since Virginia law says an un-spay puppy can only be adopted in that county or an adjoining county the woman in Hanover County could not adopt her from the pound. Luckily for China the woman in southwest Virginia was someone that had worked with me on rescues before. She called me at 9:30 Tuesday night and asked if I could work out a transfer from them to one of the groups I work with in the Ashland area. She agreed to hold China until Thursday to give me a chance to work out the details of the transfer. Early the next morning I called my friend Linda Wickham (Hickory Hill K-9 Rescue). She said it was fine with her if the woman checked out for adopting the puppy. Linda checked with the woman's vet and other references and found that she would give China a great home. I contacted my friend in southwest Virginia and we started processing the paperwork for the transfer. Thursday evening after work I drove to Charlottesville where someone brought China to me. Instantly, I was glad I could help save this little dog's life. As you know I rescue and transport many dogs. Once in a while one seems very special. This was one of the ones I wish I could keep myself! She is very cute, calm, and loving. I set up with Heather, China's new mama, to meet at Hickory Hill K-9 Rescue Friday morning and fill out the adoption contract. She could not wait to meet China so Heather and Scott came to my house Thursday night to see her. They fell in love with her instantly as I did. The next morning Heather filled out the contract and took her new puppy to her vet for a checkup and to see what vaccinations she might need. Then China, now known as "Molly", went to her new forever home. She also has a spay appointment for next week. The ironic part of this story is that after spending about 2 months in a pound China was rescued only 3 hours before she would have been put down! Tom (Webmaster) |
