Welcome to Hickory Hill K-9 Rescue's website. We open this page with a thank you to everyone who has ever donated food, animal supplies, time, money, old blankets, whatever to help a homeless animal. Millions of animals are dying all over the world each and every year. To any rescue organization your donations allow them to continue to rescue and care for some of these animals.

The overpopulation of unwanted animals is what motivates us to do rescue work. These wonderful animals that die in the pounds & shelters every day at some point belonged to someone. Most of these animals enter the pound as strays but seem housebroken, child friendly, some even know basic commands. The millions of unwanted animals that will die every day can be prevented. We as people create the need for Animal Control facilities. The answer is very simple….SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PET. Most cities and counties have some type of low cost program to help you help your pet. Please don’t think you simply can’t afford it or that it doesn’t matter. Spaying and neutering your pet saves lives. So many die needlessly….We encourage anyone looking for a pet to consider the happiness a pound dog can bring to your life not to mention what you bring to theirs. Their gratitude can simply be overwhelming.

Another way of saving the life of an animal is identification. It speaks volumes for the lost pet that can’t tell you where it lives or who it belongs to. The best way to identify your animal and ensure its safety is microchipping. This is a very small chip that goes into the animal just like a shot but provides the animal with a scannable chip with the owner’s information. Almost all veterinary offices now have scanners that read all types of microchips. Animal Control here in Hanover County scans every dog that enters the system for a microchip in the hopes it can be reunited with its owners. ID tags that hang on the collar are very useful along with the rabies tag. Both provide information to help get that lost pet back home where it belongs.

When looking for that new family member please remember to really think about the things you and your family want and need in a pet that fits the family lifestyle. Get to know your breeds! Some breeds require more space, exercise and circumstances than others. Even if you are going to adopt a mixed breed, look into what it's primary breed needs in a home, environment and exercise. Your new family member needs to be wanted by everyone in the family and included in your daily lives to be truly happy.

HO!    Not long before Christmas will be upon us…take time this holiday season to make a forever memory of the furry members of your family.  Help support Hickory Hill K-9 Rescue this holiday season while making that memory.  COME HAVE YOUR PETS PHOTO TAKEN WITH SANTA!  We will be at the Mechanicsville PETsMART (7225 Bell Creek Road) with Santa on December 10 and December 11 from 11am to 4pm.   The cost of photos is only $9.95 when you use your Pet Perks card.   The rescue will receive $5.00 for every photo taken so we can continue to help the homeless animals.  We appreciate your support and wish everyone a happy, safe holiday season.

Well, they say we are in for a cold winter…as the seasons change so does like here at the rescue. Please take care of your pets this winter and read the “Winter Warnings” page to help keep your pet safe.   The rescue has some wonderful housebroken dogs needing indoor homes not just for the winter but forever.  Do you have room for just one?
