The Humane Society of the United States estimates that more than 4 to 6 million healthy, adoptable pets are euthanized in area shelters each year; in the Metro Area alone, more than 15,000 cats and dogs lose their lives each year. Their crime? Simply being born. Unfortunately, the United States is not immune to the problem of pet overpopulation -- too many pets and too few available homes. While adoption programs help match needy animals with loving families, the single most important step we can take to combat pet overpopulation is to reduce the number of animals being born.
To this end, Capital Animal Care developed the area's first and only mobile spay-neuter program -- the Capital Area Mobile Spay Neuter Clinic. The mobile clinic provides no cost and low cost spay-neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and health screenings to medically underserved pets in the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. Local humane societies and animal control organizations assist Capital Animal Care in identifying target areas with high incidences of stray and unwanted pets. To qualify for these services, pet owners must be on a state qualified public assistance program.
Additionally, the mobile clinic provides spay-neuter before adoption services to area animal shelters and rescue groups. Our clients include but are not limited to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue, Aussie Rescue and Placement Helpline, Hot Water Rescue, Assisi's Foundation, Home Alone Feline Rescue, and Alley Cat Allies.
The mobile clinic is a state of the art surgical facility meeting and exceeding all requirements of the Virginia Board of Health Professionals and the District of Columbia's Department of Health. Licensed veterinarians perform the spay-neuter surgeries with assistance from veterinary technicians, assistants and volunteers. To date, we have spayed and neutered nearly 1,000 animals!
Additionally, the mobile clinic is used for:
- mobile adoptions
- emergency response -- CAC is a first-responder for the District of Columbia!
- distribution of pet food and supplies to needy families
