DFW Dachshund Rescue Calendars Officially Sold Out

Thank you to everyone who ordered one or more of our DFW Dachshund Rescue "Picture A New Life" 2008 Calendars. We had an overwhelming response and have officially sold out. Calendars were sent out to people in 14 states and also to China, Wales, and Scotland. Here are a few of the comments we received about the calendar: "This is the most beautiful, most professional dachshund calendar I've ever seen--I MUST have one"; "The calendar is unbelievable! It should be in the stores as a professional calendar -- each photo is cuter than the one before"; "The interviews are a stroke of genious!"; "The calendar looks incredible! I own a black/tan smooth haired dachshund, who I adore. I was looking for a calendar that would benefit a rescue. Even though I am from Massachusetts I am happy to help fellow dachshunds."

We've already had inquiries about next year and, yes, we're hoping to produce a 2009 calendar featuring more of our adopted dachshunds. This is our major fund raising project for the year. If you would like to underwrite a portion of the 2009 calendar, please contact us for information.

Nikita7 Generously Donates a Portion of Profits

We received a surprise the other day - one of those really good surprises that brings you close to tears of happiness. Kate Fannin, owner of Nikita7, generously donated a portion of her company's profits to DFW Dachshund Rescue. We send our heartfelt thanks to Kate for her kindness and support of our rescue dachshunds.

Kate Fannin is a local paper artist who designs cards, invitations, announcements, and corporate correspondence. Each of Kate's original designs is hand-crafted using unique papers, vintage or personal photos and various mixed media. In fact, photos of Kate's own two dachshunds, Sammi & Pretzel, are featured in some of her best-selling cards! Every item is a creative expression to be personalized with words or simply enjoyed as a unique piece of art. In today's era of email and impersonal e-cards, a hand written note on a hand made card makes a memorable impression.

Nikita7 cards are sold in several Metroplex boutiques, or you can contact Kate for custom orders. Nikita7 has a number of corporate clients and has been featured by Daily Candy. Visit the Nikita7 website for more information and to see samples of Kate's creations.

Videos to be Added to our Adoptable Dachshund Listings

Very soon, you'll be able to view videos of our adoptable dachshunds. One of our volunteers recently entered a contest, on behalf of DFW Dachshund Rescue, and won a digital video camera for our organization! Once we've figured out how to use the camera we'll be adding video clips of our adoptable dachshunds to their Petfinder listings. The contest, which was sponsored by Petfinder and funded by Maddie's Fund, awarded 100 digital video cameras to no-kill shelters and rescues across the country.

We'll announce when we've posted our first videos. Lights... Camera... Action!

2007 DFW Dachshund Rescue Recap

2007 brought many "firsts" to the Dallas - Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue. We've been busy this year and we wanted to share a few of our successes with you, our supporters.

Our Petfinder website debuted in March and has been expanding and improving ever since. We try our best to keep the website updated and current, so be sure to check back often.

Our first ever DFW Dachshund Rescue calendar, designed by Teresa Berg Photography, went on sale in October and the response was overwhelming! The 2008 calendar features dogs adopted from DFW Dachshund Rescue, and includes entertaining interviews with each dog. There are still a few calendars available - don't be left in the doghouse - order yours today.

This is the first year we've had booths at local community events, including Barktoberfest at Fort Woof, Walk and Wag at White Rock Lake, and Richardson All City Pet Day. We also had a Yappy Hour hosted by WUF Pet Spa and a Meet & Greet hosted by City Pet Life. These events gave DFW Dachshund Rescue some good exposure and publicity, and we enjoyed meeting all the dachshund lovers who stopped by to say "Hi". Be sure to check our website for our upcoming 2008 events.

Also in 2007 we established affiliate relationships with several online retailers. Any time an affiliate's website is entered via our website, DFW Dachshund Rescue receives a percentage of any online purchases that are made. Purchases made via Amazon.com, iGive.com, and internet searches via GoodSearch.com account for most of our affiliate revenues. Spread the word - every purchase helps.

DFW Dachshund Rescue was selected to receive the Just Dog Breeds' "Dog Rescue Award" in 2007. This award is given exclusively to breed rescue groups as recognition for their hard work and kindness towards dogs. Only seven rescue groups in the entire country have been awarded the "Dog Rescue Award". We are proud to be recognized nationally for our efforts.

In 2007, DFW Dachshund Rescue placed 36 dachshunds in excellent homes - that's 10 more than were placed in 2006! We are funded solely through donations, adoption fees, affiliate revenue, and proceeds from our calendar sales. Every dollar goes to help the rescued dogs in our program. Your support makes it possible for us to continue helping those dachshunds in need. Saving one dog will not change the world, but for that one dog, the world will change forever. All of us at Dallas - Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue thank you for helping to change the world for our very special rescue dachshunds.

Annual United Way Donations can be Directed to DFW Dachshund Rescue

It's United Way time for many companies. Most of us are familiar with this annual campaign, but did you know that your donation can be directed to benefit DFW Dachshund Rescue? Most companies allow you to designate 501(c)3 organizations of your choice to receive your United Way donations. Check your employer's United Way sign-up process for requirements, and email us or call us at 817-481-9272 for the information needed to "write in" DFW Dachshund Rescue. What a wonderful way to help the dachshunds all year long! Thanks for your support.

DFW Dachshund Rescue Receives "Dog Rescue Award"

DFW Dachshund Rescue has been selected to receive the "Dog Rescue Award". The Just Dog Breeds "Dog Rescue Award" is awarded exclusively to breed rescue groups as recognition for their hard work and kindness towards dogs. So far this year, only seven rescue groups in the entire country have been awarded the "Dog Rescue Award". DFW Dachshund Rescue is proud to be recognized nationally for our efforts, and expresses our thanks to Just Dog Breeds for their support.

Just Dog Breeds encourages the adoption of pure breed dogs from rescues and shelters, and profiles the characteristics of 155 different dog breeds on their website. This profile allows potential dog owners to quickly learn the good and bad points of every popular breed, and helps them determine whether a particular breed has the personality and physical characteristics they desire. The site also contains general information on the responsibilities of dog ownership and lists several points to consider prior to selecting a dog.

Two Rescue Dachshunds Win Titles at Agility Trial

Congratulations to DFW Dachshund Rescue dogs Lacy (left) and Nicolas (right) for their wins at the recent DFW Dachshund Club Agility Trial in Fort Worth. How can unregistered rescue dogs compete in AKC events, you ask? Easy - just apply to the AKC for an Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) number. The ILP Program allows unregistered purebreed dogs to compete in AKC Performance and Companion Events, like agility, obedience, rally, tracking, and earthdog. An ILP number can be granted to spayed or neutered purebred dogs who have come through rescue programs or shelters and thus have no traceable lineage.

Lacy and Nicolas both have ILP numbers and have been training and competing for several years. They've already earned a wall full of colorful ribbons at home! At the recent Fort Worth event, Lacy completed her Open Jumpers title and earned first place in her class. Nicolas completed his Novice Standard title and also earned first place in his class. Nicolas went on to receive his first qualifying run in Excellent A Jumpers.

Agility is fun team sport for you and your dog. Of course, it takes patience and training with a good instructor to ready a dog for competition. There are a number of training facilities in the Metroplex - we'd be glad to recommend one to you. It's a great way to spend quality time with your dog.

Click here for more information on the ILP Program, and to download an application.

"Yappy Hour" at WUF Pet Resort & Spa a Huge Success

Our August, 2007, DFW Dachshund Rescue Yappy Hour at WUF Pet Resort and Spa was a huge success! We had a great turnout, and what could be more fun than dozens of dachshunds all in one place?! Thanks to everyone who braved the heat to spend the afternoon with us. For more photos of the fun and festivities, click here.

We thank Jennifer Bassman, owner of WUF, for hosting us and providing a wonderful assortment of snacks and beverages. Thanks also to June Michel, owner of Ruff Stuff, for providing handmade leather harnesses and bandanas for our rescue dachshunds to model, and to Linda Shearin, owner of Linda's 4 Paws Bakery, for providing gift bags of tasty treats for our four-legged guests.

Several lucky winners took home raffle items and door prizes, while other guests looked through our rescue dachshund scrapbooks. The dogs enjoyed playing together in one of WUF's spacious daycare areas. Assorted dog treats were served on a silver platter.

WUF Pet Resort & Spa is located at 3417 East John Carpenter Freeway in Irving. Check out their wonderful daycare, grooming and boarding facilities - it's the discerning dog's first choice.

DFW Dachshund Rescue's "Jamie" Featured in Southern Vanity Magazine

Jamie, a handsome chocolate longhaired dachshund, was featured in the Creature Feature section of Southern Vanity magazine's June/July 2007 issue. Jamie spent quite a few months in our rescue program awaiting the perfect forever home. He was housetrained and had excellent house manners, but for some reason, adoption eluded him. Finally, just as all the foster families were growing dangerously attached to him, Jamie found his forever home. We're just thrilled that this wonderful guy now had plenty of love and attention - and publicity! You can view Jamie's Happy Tail listing to read more about him.

Affiliate Links Generate Revenue for the Dachshunds

A huge Thank You to all who have been using our various affiliate links! In just two months, online purchses and internet searches made by DFW Dachshund Rescue supporters have earned us almost $200 in commissions! That goes a long way towards basic health care for one rescued dachshund.

Any time you enter an affiliate's website via the link on our website, DFW Dachshund Rescue will receive a percentage of your total sale, at no cost to you. Online purches made through Amazon.com, iGive.com, and internet searches via GoodSearch account for most of our revenues. All of our links are available on our Home page and also on our Links page.

Spread the word - the more supporters we have the more money we make - and that means more money to help the dachshunds in need. We thank you, and the dachshunds thank you.

DFW Rescue Dachshunds Featured on "WeenieChic" Blog

We're proud to report that DFW Rescue Dachshunds Flynn, Jamie, Scrappy Doo, Brownie (now renamed Zephyr), and Fidget have recently been featured on the WeenieChic blog. WeenieChic posts plenty of cute photos, videos and comments about dachshunds, and is updated almost daily. Go to WeenieChic's home page and check out all the entries. It will keep you entertained for a LONG (no pun intended) time!

A Great Day at Pause for Pets

Capital One in Colleyville hosted Pause for Pets Saturday May 19, 2007 from 10:00 - 2:00 at the Capital One Colleyville Branch, and DFW Dachshund Rescue was one of four rescue groups invited to participate. We had a table with our Rescue Scrapbooks on display, plenty of information, and of course a few of our dachshunds. Scrappy Doo and Flynn both had a marvelous time meeting the guests who stopped by. Former DFW Dachshund Rescue Brownie (now renamed Zephyr) served as our senior good-will ambassador. We noticed plenty of dachshunds in the crowd. DFW Dachshund Rescue alums Jackson (now renamed Heinz) and Mango (and their families, of course) even stopped by to say "hello".

Capital One offered free microchipping at the event and we noticed they were busy all day. Microchipping goes a long way towards reducing the number of dogs in shelters and rescues by reuniting lost dogs with their owners. There were contests and prizes throughout the day, free food and drinks, and activities for both human and canine kids. Scrappy, Flynn and Zephyr took part in a "Best of Rescue" show, after which Capital One presented DFW Dachshund Rescue with a check for $250! Thank you, Capital One!

DFW Dachshund Rescue's "Brownie" Featured in Petfinder Newsletter

Brownie was one of the first dachshunds listed on Petfinder by DFW Dachshund Rescue back in 2005. Brownie was dumped at a local kill shelter and left for dead by his former owners. But DFW Dachshund Rescue stepped in and gave Brownie a new life, and we're proud to report he's been featured as the "Happy Tail" in May 2007's Petfinder newsletter!

The Petfinder newsletter was emailed to almost 24,000 registered subscribers, but you can view the Petfinder newsletter here. You can also view Brownie's Happy Tail listing, and read more about Brownie (now renamed Zephyr) in his scrapbook entry.

Enhancing our Petfinder Site

As you may have noticed, we've been busy enhancing our Petfinder website. See which dachshunds recently found "forever homes" in our Recent Adoptions section. Read what our adopters have to say about their rescued dachshunds in Adopters "Bark Back". We've also added a Dachshund Resource Library with helpful articles, hints and tips, an Adopted Dachshund Scrapbook with full page entries showcasing some of our adopted dachshunds, and a Dachshund Fun and Games page with plenty of interesting dachshund (and non-dachshund) related stuff. Check back often, as we'll continue to make changes and add articles of interest. If you have any comments on our site or suggestions for topics, please contact us. We welcome all feedback!

Success in 2006!

The Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation found forever homes for 26 dachshunds in 2006. Many were previous adopters who returned to us to add another dachshund to their family. Petfinder also brought us many new adopters, and has given us a much broader exposure to potential adopters. Thank you, Petfinder, for your wonderful online service!

Tom Thumb's Good Neighbor Program

Did you know that you can support the DFW Dachshund Rescue every time you buy groceries at Tom Thumb or Randalls, at no cost to you, by linking your grocery reward card to our organization? Just stop by any store's courtesy booth and ask to link your card to "Good Neighbor" organization #9454. A percentage of your purchase will automatically be donated to the DFW Dachshund Rescue.

October Picnic Honors Our Adopters

Our October 2006 adopters' picnic was a huge success! We had over 60 rescued dachshunds in attendance with their adoptive families and friends. Everyone had the opportunity to visit over a wonderful barbeque furnished by the DFW Dachshund Club and share stories about their rescue dogs. We even had some guests who came to visit and share, despite the fact that their beloved dachshunds had gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Best of all, the dachsies had an opportunity to play together. There were opportunities for any dog who was interested to try out the agility course and fun dachsie race course. After a fun filled afternoon, all the tired little dachsies and their owners went home to nap with a giant goody bag full of gifts and treats furnished by a number of the area's dog friendly merchants. We hope to make this an annual event to bring our adopters together and thank them for giving these terrific dogs loving, forever homes.
