Adopters "Bark Back"
We love hearing from our adopters about their rescue dachshunds.
Their stories and pictures inspire us to continue our efforts to find the best possible homes for the dachshunds we've rescued and so lovingly fostered.
If you've adopted a dachshund from DFW Dachshund Rescue, we encourage you to "bark back" too!

Less than a week following his adoption, we received this wonderful note from
Grover:
"I want to tell you how much I'm enjoying my new forever home, I'm definitely top dog here and I just LOVE it!
I get two or three walks a day and lots of car rides. When my parents are home we just play and play until I'm plum wore out.
I've been making friends with the other puppies in the neighborhood and they're all getting used to me being the new sheriff in town.
I've been such a good boy, mom and dad are really glad they got me. Shhhhhhhh don't tell them this but, I've already got them wrapped around my little paw!"

Dodger has become a "Hook em Horns" fan as evidenced by his Texas Longhorns blanket.
Sports rule in his household!
Dodger loves to sun himself on the porch or hunt for squirrels whenever he's not watching football with his Dad.
|
|
Tess' Dad sent us this photo of Tess in her favorite spot, curled up to sleep on the bed.
Tess is very companionable and has fit right in to the family.
|
|
|
Flash (formerly named Fritz) has finally agreed to be photographed, and DFW Dachshund Rescue has the exclusive scoop on the photos!
Unlike his publicity seeking brother
Jamie, Flash is reclusive and avoids the limelight, preferring to observe the goings-on around him in reserved anonymity.
His Mom explains that he's perfectly named, because whenever he sees a camera, "he's gone in a Flash".
With such a gorgeous face, the paparazzi will surely be hot on your trail, so you'd better get used to the "Flash" of the camera!
|
|
Harry (on the right) has a new name, Max, and has settled right in with sister dachshund Millie.
Max's Mom reports "He is so appreciative of everything. It is almost as if he knows that he is in a good place as compared to [being on] the streets.
As for he and Millie...they are a riot! They play quite a bit together. I think Millie is a little jealous - she wants everything that he touches.
She will just watch him and then when he moves she pounces on him. He is very tolerant of her craziness."
But when all the playing, pouncing and craziness is over, Millie and Max enjoy curling up together for a nap.

We think this photo of
Ellis sleeping speaks for itself!

Kami and Kelli, formerly known as "The Soap Sisters - Camay and Caress",
recently posed with Santa.
Their Mom writes "Thanks to you for making our Christmas a happy one.
This home is filled with love from our two beautiful dogs.
Kelli is a little lovebug who reminds us of our [previous dachshund] Madeleine.
Kami is letting us pick her up more and just adores my husband, but sleeps by me at night.
We are so happy your organization came into our lives!"
|
|
|
Victoria, now named Sadie, got all dressed up for Christmas.
Looks like she had a long night helping Santa deliver the gifts.
|
Phoebe's Dad sent us this photo of a happy, healthy Phoebe.
We think she looks great!
Phoebe escaped from neglectful owners who left her sick, covered with fleas, and almost completely emaciated.
She's come a long way since then, and now enjoys a life of luxury with her Dad and brother Blue.

Bingo's Mom sends this update:
"He is just a little doll, who of course, knows that he is the center of attention.
He still loves to play with balls, and can run faster than a cheetah when you throw them outside.
He also loves to chase shadows on the floor or spots of light from the sun.
He has this adorable 'pounce' that can go several feet when he is stalking a shadow on the floor.
His hair has never gotten any longer except for his little tail - but it still has the white flag at the end.
He is spoiled rotten just like his brother and sister. Thanks for all your work."
|
Lucy was one of four dachshunds rescued in December 2006.
She has a new name, Lacy, and recently sent us this note:
"It has been almost a year since you found me my new home.
I am sooooo happy here!
My parents keep mentioning that you told them not to coddle me, but I think maybe they ignored you about that.
I sleep in the bed now with my family; and of course I love it!
Thank you for finding all of the homeless dachshunds good safe homes."

Basil's adopters sent us a heartwarming note with some good advice:
"Basil had been a stray and was very hyper, unsociable with other dogs and tried to be the 'alpha male' when he came to our house.
Our dog, Beau, hated Basil at first, as he was used to being the only dog and Basil was not good about sharing things like toys and bones.
We had a rocky start, but after working with representatives from the DFW Dachshund Rescue on how to acclimate Basil, he and Beau started playing together and became buddies.
Now, Basil has such a charming little personality and has become the most loving, affectionate, loyal dog and we ADORE him!!
The moral of the story is: Do not 'give up' on a dog too quickly.
Rescued dogs may initially act out of fear and insecurity, but once they are given love and a stable home, they respond back with so much love and good behavior.
We wouldn't trade Basil for anything in the world and we are so grateful to the DFW Dachshund Rescue for saving him, and for helping us make him a member of our family."

Casey Doodle's new family sent us this report:
"My daughter and her family came by to meet [Casey] and she was happy to see them.
She really responded to the grandkids, going up to them and wagging her tail.
They had brought by one of those pillow style beds and a new toy.
We put her blankets on the bed and she liked it immediately.
The kids were happy that they had made her a cozy spot.
That evening she found her warthog toy and started playing with it, then she burrowed under the blankets.
We just love Casey and are so happy to have her as a member of our family.
We so appreciate all the love and care you gave to her."
We heard through the grapevine that Casey has a new favorite sleeping spot - on the sofa.

Charlie and
Jack's owners sent us this note:
"Charlie and Jack are doing great and give us a great deal of pleasure. We have had a very stressful year and it's so nice to be able to have our spirits lifted by the boys.
They make us laugh a lot and they are so much fun. They traveled with us by car to California this summer and they loved it. They love to ride in the car. All I have to do is touch their leashes and they go crazy.
I go to the web site every time I get online and I keep up with all the adorable adoptable dachshunds and those who have been adopted.
Thanks for what you do for these wonderful animals."

We recently received a great photo of
Phoebe (left) and sibling Blue relaxing in their favorite spot - on the couch.
Phoebe's Dad reports:
"As you can tell Ms. P. has gained a pound or two.
I just got back from a vacation and when I took them over to my brother's house he said, 'Whew girl, you done grown out of your girdle'!
Phoebe and Blue have just bonded to each other and it's so cute to see big brother Blue take care of his lil' sister... that is until she decides she wants to wrestle!"

Cindy was adopted just in time to participate in the family Christmas photo for 2007.
Here's a portion of the photo with Cindy between two of her five doggie siblings.
Now that's a good looking trio! Merry Christmas, Cindy.
We sure hope Santa filled your stocking with lots of tasty treats!

|
Coco's family sends us this update:
"Coco is adjusting very nicely. [Doggie sibling] Peanut has taken to him and tries to lay beside him.
They are very funny to watch and I feel certain as Coco gets more comfortable at our house that he will be more open and at ease.
He's still a bit jittery but that is certainly understandable with the conditions he came from. Thanks for the opportunity to adopt Coco.
He is already enriching our lives. I know where to refer someone who is looking for a new dachshund to love!"

Carson has a new name, Charlie, and has settled into his new home just fine. His Mom tells us:
"Charlie is doing fantastic and is such a joy. While he certainly has his frisky moments, I have to tell you he is the most laid back doxie I have known.
He is so easy...all he wants is to have his belly rubbed and constantly lick you with that long tongue of his.
I have to keep asking, how could anyone want to give this precious pup away?
We are truly blessed to have him come into our lives. Thank you."

Congratulations go to
Gabe, (left, pictured here with sister Molly) who has reached his weight loss target!
His owners sent us this update:
"I wanted to share the good news that Gabe has finally reached his goal weight of 17 pounds!
We are so thrilled. I think he finally understands that we are his forever family and he is not just a visitor.
He and Molly are becoming more and more like brother and sister; he is such a lovebug, always giving kisses.
Our cat Baby and Gabe have even become the best of furry buddies.
Gabe's coat is full and shiny and the bald patches he had are completely gone."
Gabriel - you look FAB-U-LOUS!
You can read all about Gabe's weight loss program
here.

WOW - check out
Cindy as she smiles and says "CHEEEEEEESE" for the camera! We're told this is how she asks for tummy rubs.
Her new Mom tells us
"We are absolutely thrilled to have [Cindy Lou] as a part of our family. She had no trouble adjusting to sleeping in the bed with us, under the cover!
We all love Cindy Lou very much. Thank you for providing these precious little ones an opportunity for a second chance."

Perry, or "P-Doggy" as he is known by his fans, is currently "on location" with his owner in the Washington, DC, area.
"P's" owner is a contractor for a major pet hospitality services company, and travels across the country consulting at their various locations.
Lucky "P" sometimes gets to tag along.
Of course, "P" has the very best accommodations and a staff to cater to his every demand!
"P" isn't the only one with a smile on his face, however.
"P's" owner tells us "I can't thank you enough for Perry, he is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time."

Bennie and
Romeo went boating recently with their family. They both look quite at home out on the lake.
Bennie helped his Dad drive the boat, while Romeo enjoyed the scenery and the wind in his hair.
We can't think of a better way for these two guys to spend a sunny afternoon!
|
|
Tango's owners do lots of traveling in their RV and Tango of course gets to go along for the ride.
The family recently returned from a trip to the Canadian Rockies. Here's Tango posing with his Mom in front of scenic Lake Louise.
The big question is... did Tango get to chase after any Canadian squirrels?

|
"Super Sam" was adopted in May of 2003. He got his name because whenever anyone picked him up, he would put his paws out in front so he looked like he was flying.
We recently received this happy update from Sam's adopter:
"I wanted to give you an update and let you know that Sam is still with me and has been a great little companion.
Without Sam my life would not be the same and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't encourage someone to adopt instead of buying a puppy. Adopting him was definitely the best thing I have ever done in my life and the joy he brings to me each day is priceless!"
|
|
Heinz (now renamed Sammy) already has a part-time job!
Once a week, he accompanies his owner to a local nursing home as part of a church outreach program.
He visits with the residents, soaking up the attention and getting plenty of lap-time and treats!
He not only brings smiles to the nursing home residents, he brings plenty of smiles to his owners, too.
His family reports "He continues to make us laugh every day."
|
|
|
Seems
Scrappy Doo (now renamed Jack) has a new hobby.
His new family reports "He's a great little guy and we're thrilled with him.
This weekend was his first time to ride 4-wheelers and he just loved it.
He got to bark at bulls, horses, sheep and barn cats.
We love the little guy. Thanks for finding us for him."
Of course, being a typical dachshund, Jack is oblivious to the fact that bulls are BIGGER than he is!
|
|
Caress and Camay's adopters are thrilled with their two new family members.
"The girls are so adorable and lovable and we are really enjoying them. The last two nights they have been in bed with us and it has worked out fine.
The older one keeps sitting up and begging - so cute. We are going to call the girls Kami and Kelli."
|
|
|
From
Gabe's adopter: "Gabe says Hi and also wanted to thank you for watching him until we were able to 'find him'!
He is doing really well. He and the cat are already friends and he and [sibling dog] Molly are always in the mood to play and sleep next to one another.
I think it is safe to say that you made a good match.
Thanks for all you do."
You might recall that Gabe was grossly overweight when he arrived at DFW Dachshund Rescue.

Left to right - George, Moe, and Flynn. Their new family sends an update:
"Our new little boys
Moe and
Flynn are such a gift in our life. We are so happy and our older guy George is even playing again.
When the alarm [clock] goes off Flynn thinks it's for him and play time.
Moe moves up to the top of the bed to give kisses. Thanks so much DFW Dachshund Rescue for making our family complete."
Hmmm... we see an awful lot of toys and cozy blankets in that photo.
It appears that our prediction of them setting a new record on the "spoiled-dachshund-o-meter" was correct!
|
|
Romeo, an adorable chocolate dapple longhair, recently underwent back surgery for a herniated disc. Fortunately, he came through the surgery quite well and his prognosis is excellent!
We always tell our longhair adopters "NEVER shave their coat," but sometimes it's unavoidable. Romeo's Mom writes,
"I can still hear you saying, 'Don't shave Romeo's long hair.' You would die if you saw him now. They shaved his whole back! It looks pitiful with the staples running down the middle."
Chin up, Romeo, your beautiful coat WILL grow back! And here's to a very speedy recovery - you'll be rough-and-tumbling with brother
Bennie again in no time!
|
|
Lacy, adopted from DFW Dachshund Rescue in 2000, looks stunning in her party dress and pearls.
But don't let this girly-girl fool you - her adopters report Lacy has received her novice jumpers title in agility, and is one leg away from receiving her open jumpers title.
Lacy was a "special needs" dog, and was dreadfully fearful of everything when she was rescued.
Obedience classes and agility training helped Lacy overcome her fears and gain confidence.
Even though the walls are filled with colorful ribbons, her adopters are most proud of Lacy's "well adjusted and happy dog" title!
Check out Lacy's scrapbook page
here.

Dodger's adopter reports "Dodger is truly a great dog and he has really made himself at home with me and [sibling dachshund] Rusty.
He has found his 'spot' on the pillow by the front window and likes to watch (and bark) at passers-by.
He LOVES to go on walks and we take one first thing in the morning and one in the afternoon (if not too hot) or else in the evening.
He is very attached to me and must follow me wherever I go. I really appreciate you letting me adopt Dodger and letting me bring him into my home."
|
|
Moe and
Flynn's adopters had signs, balloons, and streamers welcoming the arrival of their two new boys.
Their "Mom" made them both lovely patchwork harness vests so they will look exceptionally dapper on their neighborhood walks.
Moe and Flynn have a dachshund sibling, George, who has suffered from severe allergies for quite some time.
George was on steroids but unfortunately his allergies persisted.
Our rescue representative suggested changing George's diet to eliminate wheat, corn and soy (common canine allergens) from his food.
After two weeks, George is off the steroids, his flaky skin is healing, and he feels great!
It's a very Happy Tail for all three dachshunds!

|
Jamie's new mother reports
"My husband is so crazy over this dog I think Jamie could sleep on his face and eat from his plate and [my husband] wouldn't mind!
The first time Jamie burrowed under the covers we both laughed so hard!
My father's dachshund does it, but not being previous dachshund people we didn't know they ALL like it!"
Jamie's adoptive mother is a professional photographer, and she reports that Jamie is turning out to be quite the model!
He wanders in to her studio and takes his place in front of the clients being photographed. Check out Jamie's new portfolio
here.

Jazz (now renamed Oskar) writes, "Dear DFW Dachshund Rescue,
Wow! I'm home! I must be very important. Everyone picks me up and loves me.
I may forget how to walk. I am so cute and well mannered.
I just preen and am so quiet when the neighbors hold me, so it must be true.
My dachshund brothers are great. Boomer and I play and romp.
I help around the house and pick up anything, especially shoes. My folks love me bunches, and I love them too.
Love, Oskar"

Bravo recently celebrated his first anniversary with his forever family.
"Just wanted to thank you once again for our sweet boy Bravo.
It was a year ago, Sunday March 11, 2006 that he joined our family.
We would like to make a donation to the rescue in his name to help another sweet dachshie like our boy find a new, wonderful home.
Thank you for all you do - Bravo has made our family complete!"
Check out Bravo's scrapbook page
here.

We just received this note from
Boomer -
"I love my new home and new parents. They were so impressed by my kitchen expertise!
I helped with the dishwasher but Mom said I didn't need to.
They thought I might like to sleep in my crate, but I stopped that in a hurry!
I am not called Boomer for nothing! Thank you for finding me such a great home.
Love, Boomer"

Russell's new family reports that it was a match made in Heaven.
Evidently Russell has acquired a wardrobe; his "Mom" bought dog sweaters for him.
One sweater was not enough - he has FOUR to make sure he will always be well dressed!

|
Report from
Jackson's adopters (now renamed Heinz) -- "Heinz has already stolen both our hearts.
He is just a fireball with activity.
No doubt he is an adult by his manners, etc. but he just has the energy level of a puppy!!!
He celebrated his birthday by snatching a mouthful of sauerkraut off my plate!! He loved it."
Check out Heinz' scrapbook page
here.

Fritz' adopter sent us a "Top Ten List of Things I've Learned About Fritz" which includes
"Now assumes when the doorbell rings, it is someone coming to see HIM!" and
"Knew without being told which Christmas stocking was his." and
"LOVES flannel sheets on the bed. I've had to remind him that he's not a bear and doesn't need to hibernate!"
|
|
From
Pepper's adopters -- "It was so wonderful to welcome our precious baby girl into our family.
Thank you for the work that you perform so tirelessly.
Pepper and (sibling) Duke rang the New Year in by playing themselves to sleep.
Pepper is still not sure exactly what type of toy she would prefer,
but she has tried all of them out.
I foresee a special trip to Petsmart for a personal selection."
|
|
From Ginger's adopters (Ginger was adopted from DFW Dachshund Rescue 11 years ago) --
"She has always had a love for dirty laundry, food, and my oldest brother,
and still does, but now she is deaf and missing teeth.
If she falls into a deep sleep, she will usually wake up with her tongue sticking out because of the missing front teeth.
She has her own special 'queen' bed.
And she pretty much gets away with murder, knocking over our trash, and stealing laundry.
I can hear her occasionally snort and snore on the bed behind me, and it's sweeter than any lullaby."
|
|
Tango's adopters spend much of their time traveling in their RV, and Tango rides shotgun everywhere they go.
He's visited 8 or 9 different states since his adoption and is a superb traveler.
His coat has darkened to a handsome chocolate and tan color, and he's full of energy, bounding all around the RV.
Tango's owners even took him along on an airplane trip to Las Vegas - he flew in the cabin with them, of course.

|
Nelson's adopters report that he's fit in exceptionally well on their ranch -
his "job" is to keep the feral pigs off the property!
We hear that Nelson is a natural at that - and the ranch is pig-free.
Of course, once the "chores" are done, Nelson is like any other spoiled rotten dachshund -
his family admits "Nelson owns us".

When
Lily was first delivered to her adopter's home, there was a sign on the door saying "Welcome home Lily".
Lily's adopter told us the last time he was that excited was when his son was born.
|
|
From
Dooney's adopters -- "Dooney is doing very well.
We've discovered over the summer that he really enjoys swimming in my mother-in-law's play pool.
Dooney walks right into the pool and swims around with us.
He also makes watering the yard difficult because he continually attacks the water stream from the hose. "
