Zephyr
Zephyr is a 10 year old, 14 pound male red longhair dachshund. Zephyr was adopted in July of 2005.
He has two rescued dachshund siblings, Fidget and Harley. His name was originally Brownie, but his adopters
felt that he needed a new name to go along with his new beginning.
Zephyr's original owners never provided him any vet care. Eventually he became so sick that his owners took him to a vet to be euthanized.
When they were told there would be a charge for that service, they dumped Zephyr at a local kill shelter instead.
Even though Zephyr was too sick to do much besides sleep, the shelter workers could see that he had great potential if only he could be rescued and treated.
Shelter workers, kennel walkers, and other dachshund lovers contacted DFW Dachshund Rescue and begged and pleaded for Zephyr's rehabilitation.
Even though it would be quite costly, they agreed to rescue Zephyr. Among other things, he was treated for a severe ear infection that had rendered him deaf,
a massive gum infection, and heartworms.
Today, Zephyr can hear the krinkle of candy wrappers three rooms away! He comes running for "snacks" and stands on his back legs,
begging with his front paws. He's learned several tricks, including "spin" and "low five" that he performs in the hopes of more snacks.
His coat is now long and silky, thanks to a good diet and daily supplements.
Zephyr is a mellow dog and loves to lounge on the couch or in one of many doggie beds scattered throughout the house.
When he sleeps, he usually has his eyes halfway open and his tongue slightly sticking out of his mouth. He's frequently stretched out
on his back with all four feet in the air. Zephyr loves car rides and has been on a road trip to Indiana to visit friends and relatives.
Even though he was an older dog when adopted, we think Zephyr still has plenty of life left to live - thanks to DFW Dachshund Rescue!
