Why Adopt A Male Dog?Neutered male dogs, the opposite of what most people think, are usually sweeter, more loyal and more willing to please than females. Females tend to want to be "queen" of your house and do things on their own terms--rather than yours! Unfortunately, many people have an unfair prejudice against owning a male dog; based on inaccurate and outdated information.Years ago, many male dogs were un-neutered, so "leg lifting", commonly known as "marking" was a significant problem. Also, people were not nearly as vigilant in their housetraining approaches as we now know is necessary with the hound breeds. A hound (dachshund, beagle, basset, etc.) learns quickly, whether it is the wrong behavior or the correct behavior. Once the dog learns that a wrong behavior such as "marking" is possible, then it takes awhile to re-train the dog to the desired correct behavior. Once neutering removes the hormonal urge to "mark", then the owner is left with a housetraining pattern that he or she must be very consistent about maintaining for the first several months. Today, all male dogs available through rescue groups like ours are neutered. Through the use of a "belly band" and consistent housetraining procedures, leg-lifting can be eliminated in the majority of dogs. Feel free to e-mail us and ask for a copy of our handout on "how to use a belly band". Male dogs are the sweetest and most loving companion you could add to your home. Give it some thought!
