Disaster Preparedness for Your Pets

Each year disasters such as tornadoes, floods, extended power outages and even hurricanes are possible in our area. You need to prepare for yourself and for your pets in the event of a disaster.

Short-term evacuations may become extended evacuations so always take your pets with you.

Be sure you are up-to-date on your pet's vet care, and are aware of any special needs they might have.

Prepare a pet evacuation kit and store it in an easily accessible, waterproof container. Check the contents of the kit regularly. At a minimum, this kit should contain:
  • Your identification: Name, address, phone/cell numbers, other emergency contacts
  • Pet's identification: Species, breed, color, detailed description, age, sex, current rabies license/tag number, veterinary contact, vaccination and major medical records, and microchip ID number
  • Pet supplies: One carrier per pet, bedding, collar or harness, leash, medications (identifying dose and frequency), food, water, dishes, manual can opener if needed, paper towels, trash bags and small baggies for waste, and toys. Check and replace the food and water annually.

  • Familiarize your pet with its carrier. It must be large enough for your pet to stand and turn around in while inside. Carriers should be labeled with your identification, your pet's identification and your veterinarian's identification.

Locate evacuation sites, such as shelters, hotels, kennels, veterinarians, friends, and family. Know how to get there or keep maps handy. Check in advance for pet-friendly locations.

Your pets will thank you for being pro-active and preparing before a crisis. Let's hope you never need to implement such a plan, but if you do, you'll be glad you are prepared!
