Adding Another Dachshund to a Multi-Dog Home

So you're ready to add another dachshund to your multi-dog home? Congratulations! Maybe you already have one or more dachshunds in your home and are wondering what factors to take into consideration when choosing the ideal new companion. It is important to prioritize the right factors when you're making this decision.

It's not uncommon to see people who are set on making gender or color their key selection factors. Gender and color are very superficial characteristics when selecting a dog. Basing your decision on these characteristics can be a big mistake in the long run.

Instead of gender or color, the first thing you should consider is the attitude of your current animals towards any and all other dogs outside of your home. You may want another dog in the home to solve issues with your current dogs; but that may not fix the situation - indeed, it may create additional problems. Be certain that all animals in your household are receptive to a new companion.

When choosing your new companion, be sure to ask yourself these questions:
1) What is the personality of the new dog?
2) How will this personality mesh with the animal personalities already in your home?
3) How will this personality mesh with the human personalities in the home?
4) How does the size and activity level of this dog mesh with your current dogs?
5) Will this dog be suitable for what you like to do?
6) If you are an active person, will this dog be suitable for an active lifestyle?
7) If you are a quieter person, will this dog enjoy just sitting around with you?

Remember, gender and color are very superficial characteristics. Base your decision on the above factors instead and you'll be well on the road to selecting a dog that is truly a good match for your home!
