Christmas Dog or Cat?

It is never a good idea to surprise someone with a gift of a dog or cat. But ...

If you know that the person you were thinking of has been wishing for, and is ready to make the long-term commitment to a companion pet, you can help[ them by purchasing a WAHS gift certificate that covers the adoption fee. When you're friend is ready, they can visit the shelter and choose the right dog or cat that fits their lifestyle, whether it be a bouncy demanding puppy, an independent housecat, a high energy collie mix or little lap dog. We have all kinds and the best gift you can give is the gift of choice and time to that special person who wants a special companion.

Can You Foster a Dog or Cat?

The need for foster "parents" to homeless animals is enormous at the shelter. There are pregnant dogs and cats who need to deliver their litters in safety and comfort; and the offspring needs to stay with the mother till they are weaned. There are frightened, emaciated animals who have never known the warmth of a home or the love of a human. There are injured or ill animals who need convalescence. There are old animals who need to spend the short time that they have left somewhere other than in a metal and concrete cage. And there are animals whose fate remains murky during drawn out court proceedings who lie listless and depressed for countless weeks, months and even years.

We see all of these situations and more at the Washington Area Humane Society. Foster homes give animals a huge advantage by providing a nurturing environment where they can be  socialized, overcome health and behavioral problems and avoid the stress of the kennels.

If you can help for a few days, a few weeks or a longer period, we implore you to sign up as a foster parent.

For more information on fostering, please call the shelter at 724-222-7387.

A Bag of Special Potato and Duck Dogfood Will be a Big Help

As each animal enters the shelter, they bring a history that might be a mystery if they come in as strays. Our vet techs try to identify the weak, the ill or those with special needs due to allergies. We routinely have a few dogs who require special food to help them improve or regain health and vitality. We would like to continue to feed them Dick Van Patton's (Hypo-Allergenic) Natural Balance Potato and Duck dog food and we are running low. Please bring us a bag of this special food for some of our special dogs. It is available at most major pet food stores.

It's Kitten Season! We Need Foster Parents Now.

Every spring, expectant cats and orphaned newborn kittens stream through the shelter doors ... tiny tabbys, tigers, and tuxedos – long and short haired ... all in need of loving homes. Our most critical need is for foster parents who can feed and wean the kittens until they are big enough to be adopted. If you can help, please call Carol at the shelter. You will be giving these little ones a great start to a happy, healthy life.

Ouch ... that Looks Painful

Sugar Ray came to the shelter as a stray and he has just looked pitiful and pained. Sugar Ray, a beautiful flame point Siamese needs to have surgery on his eyes due to a  severe herpes infection. The cost of the surgery is estimated at $500.

Please help share the load for this poor boy in our efforts to help him and make him more comfortable.

Please Help Share the Load for Princess Kitty

Princess Kitty loves to have her belly rubbed and she gets along with other cats. She came to the shelter with a broken leg that required surgical pins and is now splinted. She is recovering in foster care. The price of her surgery and medical bills came to approximately $900.00

Please help share the load for this darling cat with the pretty blue eyes who is expected to make a full recovery.

When you help share the load for animals who have suffered a trauma that requires medical treatment above and beyond what the shelter can provide, it helps to offset the unexpected financial burden

It costs $1,500.00 per day to run the Washington Area Humane Society. That includes the utilities, building upkeep, medicine, food, cat litter, veterinarian services, gas and maintenance for our vehicles, insurance, postage, payroll, and everything else required to run a normal business.

We have no steady stream of income upon which we can rely. We rely on you.
That’s what the 1,500 Club is meant to be ... 1,500 people who donate a dollar a day all at one time. It’s a reliable way to secure our $500,000 annual budget so we won’t have to sweat the whole year deciding from day to day between whether to purchase flea and tick medicine or pay the water bill.

Become a member of an exceptional group of supporters who pledge a dollar a day annually to our Humane Society. Call 724-229-0404 to pledge your dollar a day. Or email: washahs@fyi.net. Or download the pledge form, and mail it back. You will be contacted during the last week of November to collect your tax-deductible pledge donation via check or credit card. Just a dollar a day from 1,500 animal-loving, caring people will do it to keep our shelter in business for another year.

All 1,500 Club WAHS members can attend and vote at the annual meeting.

Can't Adopt an Animal but Would Love to Help One?

Sometimes the timing is not right, or
the circumstances make it impossible to adopt a dog or cat who captures your heart.

Consider sponsoring a pet's adoption by purchasing a GET OUT OF JAIL FREE Card for that dog or cat who melts your heart. Choose an adoptable adult dog or cat, and pay their adoption fee (Dogs: $75.00 / Cats:$50.00). We will keep the card on file until someone chooses that dog or cat to adopt, fills out the application and is approved. Only then will they be told that their new best friend has a Get Out of Jail Free card, and when they ride out into the sunset together we will mail the card to you so you can share in the joy. Link for Love — A New Way of Connecting Business and Charity

Click Here for more details about our Linked for Love Business Program.

Link your business to a homeless dog or cat at the Washington Area Humane Society. Our animals may be in a kennel or cage for a long time while they wait for that special someone who will take them home forever.

Each adoptable dog and cat featured on our website is also featured on three other, much larger and well-recognized websites, who host our pet list: Petfinder (owned by Animal Planet), Adoptapet.com and Pets911.com. These sites are very popular and heavily utilized by potential adopters nationwide expanding the pool of people who view our animals ... and your link.

This program is geared to businesses who wish to be associated with one or more particular "adoptees" at our shelter through a promise of a donation to the shelter when that dog or cat is adopted. When your sponsored animal is viewed, your business website link [sample]and generous donation are seen by visitors.

Your sponsorship may be that little boost or incentive that potential adopters need to take a second look at a dog or cat at our shelter.

We want to provide all of our dogs with a Kuranda dog bed. If you would like to Donate a Kuranda Dog Bed so another dog can sleep in proper comfort, click here.
We could use some more of the 35 x 23 size!
