Buster Needs a Foster Home. |
 |
Buster, a young, boisterous Am-staff mix
has been at the shelter for many weeks waiting for his day in court
which is scheduled for October 7th — a long way off. Rescued from
deplorable conditions, a WAHS humane officer brought Buster to the
shelter where he now receives the basic care every pet deserves. But
what he really needs is a home with a family who will make sure that
this friendly boy is cared for and loved for the rest of his life. As
impressive as he is, Buster was very nice to a female hound who decided
to burrow from her pen to his one day at the shelter. Buster is not
happy about being caged nearly 24 hours a day. This fit, playful dog
would love to have some walks, play time and training. If you would like to afford
Buster a comforting place
to wait it out, please call the shelter for more information.

Can You Foster a Dog or Cat? |
|
The need for
foster "parents" to homeless animals is enormous at the shelter. There
are pregnant dogs and cats who need to deliver their litters in safety
and comfort; and the offspring needs to stay with the mother till they
are weaned. There are frightened, emaciated animals who have never known
the warmth of a home or the love of a human. There are injured or ill
animals who need convalescence. There are old animals who need to spend
the short time that they have left somewhere other than in a metal and
concrete cage. And there are animals whose fate remains murky during
drawn out court proceedings who lie listless and depressed for countless
weeks, months and even years.
We see all
of these situations and more at the Washington Area Humane Society.
Foster homes give animals a huge advantage by providing a nurturing
environment where they can be socialized, overcome health and
behavioral problems and avoid the stress of the kennels.
If you can
help for a few days, a few weeks or a longer period, we implore you to
sign up as a foster parent.
For more
information on fostering, please call the shelter at 724-222-7387.

A Bag of Special Potato and Duck Dogfood Will be a Big Help |
As each
animal enters the shelter, they bring a history that might be a
mystery if they come in as strays. Our vet techs try to identify the
weak, the ill or those with special needs due to allergies. We
routinely have a few dogs who require special food to help them
improve or regain health and vitality. We would like to continue to
feed them Dick Van Patton's (Hypo-Allergenic) Natural Balance Potato
and Duck dog food and we are running low. Please bring us a
bag of this special food for some of our special dogs. It is
available at most major pet food stores.

NO,
WE WANT NO COMPUTERS!
We Want No Computers, today.
Please do not being any more computers or related
hardware (printers, monitors, copy machines, empty ink cartridges,
etc.) to the shelter. We have everything we need at this time and
are completely maxed out of space. Thank you to everyone who donated
and if there is someone out there who would be willing to come in
and pick up all of our computer-related discards, please let us
know. |

An Angel Recovering from a Hellish
Experience |
| |

|
|
You can see in her eyes that she is one unhappy camper
after an auto accident mangled her leg so badly it had to be amputated.
Angel has been moping around in her foster home for nearly two weeks. It
was big when her foster dad said she finally wagged her tail. So skinny
that she is eating puppy food to gain a few pounds, Angel is starting to
hobble around, learning how to adjust to life on her remaining three
legs.
She is not the first tripod dog at WAHS to need a home, but
Angel would really benefit from a patient owner who could understand
that Angel needs time to warm up to you. Angel is housebroken and calm —
more withdrawn than anything — but this pretty, medium-size am-staff mix
with a heart-shaped splotch on her left side and her big sad eyes will
almost break your heart. |
| |
If you would like to know more about Angel, call Gary at
724-206-0548.
To contribute to her surgical and medical bills,
make your
tax-deductible donation* check payable to WAHS and write “Angel” in the memo line or [click here]
to use a credit card
through Paypal.
*All donations in excess of what is necessary for Angel
will be used for our other deserving shelter cats and dogs. |

(Alexander) "Xander" is back up on
four legs |
| |

 |
|
The young dog brought to the shelter after spending more than 2
weeks with severe injuries (see story below) is back on his feet again. The femoral heads in both
hips were removed and the remaining bone in each leg is expected to
settle into place with ongoing therapy and exercise. Xander, who
lovingly follows everyone and every dog around visited the shelter
recently, licking the hands of children and trailing everyone who
glanced his way. Thanks to so many generous donors, Xander's
surgery and follow-up treatments have been covered.
His story:
Charleroi police responded to a call by a local witness who saw the
owner of a young pit bull mix beating the dog with a two-by-four.
This same owner had reportedly been seen throwing scalding water on
the dog in the past.
When the WAHS cruelty investigator picked up the poor dog, it was the
first step in the right direction for an innocent animal who is now
recovering from a history of brutality at the hands of his owner.
Named Alexander (shortened to Xander) by staff, he finally felt good enough to
eat some wet food from a small bowl held by manager, Lorie Schooley who
received the call about the dog at 8am, August 2nd. One of Xander's hips had been knocked out of the socket and
the other hip bone had been broken from the leg. He also had open
infected wounds. Police and Humane Officers filed animal cruelty charges against the owner.
You can see Xander at the Artist's Co-op on Friday, October 3rd from
6-9pm as he greets guests at the opening of Noah's Art. |

To contribute to his surgical and medical bills,
make your
tax-deductible donation* check payable to WAHS and write “Alex” in the memo line or [click here]

*All donations in excess of what is necessary for Alex
will be used for our other deserving shelter cats and dogs. |

It costs $1,500.00 per day to run the Washington Area Humane Society.
That includes the utilities, building upkeep, medicine, food, cat
litter, veterinarian services, gas and maintenance for our vehicles,
insurance, postage, payroll, and everything else required to run a
normal business.
We have no steady stream of income upon which we can
rely. We rely on you.
That’s what the 1,500 Club is meant to be ... 1,500 people who donate a
dollar a day all at one time. It’s a reliable way to secure our $500,000
annual budgetso we won’t have to sweat the whole year
deciding from day to day between whether to purchase flea and tick
medicine or pay the water bill.
Become a member of an exceptional group of supporters who
pledge a dollar a day annually to our Humane Society. Call 724-229-0404
to pledge your dollar a day. Or email:
washahs@fyi.net. Or download the pledge
form, and mail it back. You will be contacted during the last week of
November, 2008 to collect all tax-deductible pledge donations via check
or credit card during that week. Just a dollar a day from 1,500
animal-loving, caring people will do it to keep our shelter in business
for another year.
All 1,500 contributors will have a memorial brick with
their personalized message placed at WAHS.

Can't Adopt an Animal but Would Love
to Help One? |
| |
 |
|
Sometimes the timing is not right, or
the circumstances make it impossible to adopt a dog or cat who captures
your heart.
Consider sponsoring a pet's adoption by purchasing a GET OUT OF JAIL
FREE Card for that dog or cat who melts your heart. Choose an
adoptable adult dog or cat, and pay their adoption fee (Dogs: $75.00 /
Cats: $40.00). We will keep the card on file until someone chooses that
dog or cat to adopt, fills out the application and is approved. Only then
will they be told that their new best friend has a Get Out of Jail Free
card, and when they ride out into the sunset together we will mail the
card to you so you can share in the joy. [
