Christmas Dog or Cat? |
|
It is
never a good idea to surprise someone with a gift of a dog or cat.
But ...
If you know that the person you were thinking of has
been wishing for, and is ready to make the long-term commitment to a
companion pet, you can help[ them by purchasing a WAHS gift
certificate that covers the adoption fee. When you're friend is
ready, they can visit the shelter and choose the right dog or cat
that fits their lifestyle, whether it be a bouncy demanding puppy,
an independent housecat, a high energy collie mix or little lap dog.
We have all kinds and the best gift you can give is the gift of
choice and time to that special person who wants a special
companion. |

Can You Foster a Dog or Cat? |
|
The need for
foster "parents" to homeless animals is enormous at the shelter. There
are pregnant dogs and cats who need to deliver their litters in safety
and comfort; and the offspring needs to stay with the mother till they
are weaned. There are frightened, emaciated animals who have never known
the warmth of a home or the love of a human. There are injured or ill
animals who need convalescence. There are old animals who need to spend
the short time that they have left somewhere other than in a metal and
concrete cage. And there are animals whose fate remains murky during
drawn out court proceedings who lie listless and depressed for countless
weeks, months and even years.
We see all
of these situations and more at the Washington Area Humane Society.
Foster homes give animals a huge advantage by providing a nurturing
environment where they can be socialized, overcome health and
behavioral problems and avoid the stress of the kennels.
If you can
help for a few days, a few weeks or a longer period, we implore you to
sign up as a foster parent.
For more
information on fostering, please call the shelter at 724-222-7387.

A Bag of Special Potato and Duck Dogfood Will be a Big Help |
As each
animal enters the shelter, they bring a history that might be a
mystery if they come in as strays. Our vet techs try to identify the
weak, the ill or those with special needs due to allergies. We
routinely have a few dogs who require special food to help them
improve or regain health and vitality. We would like to continue to
feed them Dick Van Patton's (Hypo-Allergenic) Natural Balance Potato
and Duck dog food and we are running low. Please bring us a
bag of this special food for some of our special dogs. It is
available at most major pet food stores.

PLEASE
VOTE AGAIN
FOR WAHS |
| |
 |
Well...we did not make it into the top 10 shelters in the last contest
and we find ourselves in yet another contest for a $10,000 grant which
is the grand prize. Prizes are awarded to all shelters in the top 20..This one is sponsored by
Adopt-a-pet.com and the requirements are to get
as many people to register their vote for us between now and January
31st.
It seems so easy. We have so many supporters who can make
it happen. Just start spreading the word and who knows... maybe we can
be winners again.

A passerby saw the
two dogs lying by the side of the road i Avella, one with a bloodied
neck. But when Humane Officer, Marcia Rothaar arrived, the dogs
scattered.
The young male was
so frightened and distrustful; there was no catching him. The female
was easier to nab, since she was limping. Over the next two days a
trap was set to catch the intact male. A close-up inspection
revealed the torture the dog had endured. A collar, the size used
for 8-week-old puppies was embedded in the neck of this now
eight-month-old Labrador retriever mix. His neck was a mass of raw
meat that was growing around this nylon collar like a tree limb
grows round electrical wires, smelling of a terrible infection.
Where the pair came
from or how they got there is still unknown, but there can be no
question that at some time in his short life, “Denali” (named by
shelter staff) was someone’s puppy. Yet it is unfathomable —
unforgiveable — how anyone could let this injurious impediment to
his growth be ignored …left to cut into his flesh and slowly choke
the life out of him. It is nothing less than clear-cut animal abuse.
Emergency room vet
care was administered where the collar was surgically removed. The
wound, still an inch wide is slowly healing. Denali is still so very
scared of people…no surprise from a dog who has endured so much
pain.

It costs $1,500.00 per day to run the Washington Area Humane Society.
That includes the utilities, building upkeep, medicine, food, cat
litter, veterinarian services, gas and maintenance for our vehicles,
insurance, postage, payroll, and everything else required to run a
normal business.
We have no steady stream of income upon which we can
rely. We rely on you.
That’s what the 1,500 Club is meant to be ... 1,500 people who donate a
dollar a day all at one time. It’s a reliable way to secure our $500,000
annual budgetso we won’t have to sweat the whole year
deciding from day to day between whether to purchase flea and tick
medicine or pay the water bill.
Become a member of an exceptional group of supporters who
pledge a dollar a day annually to our Humane Society. Call 724-229-0404
to pledge your dollar a day. Or email:
washahs@fyi.net. Or download the pledge
form, and mail it back. You will be contacted during the last week of
November, 2008 to collect all tax-deductible pledge donations via check
or credit card during that week. Just a dollar a day from 1,500
animal-loving, caring people will do it to keep our shelter in business
for another year.
All 1,500 contributors will have a memorial brick with
their personalized message placed at WAHS.

Can't Adopt an Animal but Would Love
to Help One? |
| |

|
|
Sometimes the timing is not right, or
the circumstances make it impossible to adopt a dog or cat who captures
your heart.
Consider sponsoring a pet's adoption by purchasing a GET OUT OF JAIL
FREE Card for that dog or cat who melts your heart. Choose an
adoptable adult dog or cat, and pay their adoption fee (Dogs: $75.00 /
Cats: $40.00). We will keep the card on file until someone chooses that
dog or cat to adopt, fills out the application and is approved. Only then
will they be told that their new best friend has a Get Out of Jail Free
card, and when they ride out into the sunset together we will mail the
card to you so you can share in the joy. [
