Maxi Before and After
This is what it's all about!!
Maxi is living proof of what a little love and attention can do for even the most neglected and abused animals. Maxi came to us as no more than a severely matted skeleton that was afraid of his own shadow. With a little TLC from our volunteers and the love and devotion of his new owner Maxi is now a fat, happy and confident puppy!
Who We Are
Animal Underground is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization. We are staffed solely by volunteers who give of their time and talents to help us achieve our mission—to find forever homes for wonderful homeless animals.
Our Beginning
In April 2003, we visited a Philadelphia shelter with the hope of helping them adopt out their animals. We started May 3rd, 2003 at the PETsMART in Montgomeryville. We had no idea what an overwhelming success our program would be. We literally have potential adopters waiting on Saturdays and Sundays for the animals to arrive. We have received tremendous support not only from PETsMART, but from the community as well. We have received donations of all types, we are constantly getting new volunteers, and we have been invited to several other PETsMART locations. In 2004 we adopted out 440 dogs and 75 cats/kittens.
Our Mission
Our primary goal is to save as many adoptable animals as possible by providing adoption services through partnering with other 501c3 shelters. Our secondary goal is to ensure spay/neuter of all companion animals as a long-term solution to the overpopulation problem. We strive to create a win/win situation for the shelter, the animals, the adopter, the adoption center, and for our volunteers.
What We Offer
We understand that shelters are often overwhelmed with daily shelter operations and do not have the staffing to promote all of their adoptable animals. We offer a unique program that achieves many positive results. Our program works as follows:
-
We select shelter animals that are at risk either due to length of time at the shelter, treatable medical issues the shelters can not handle, or animals that will simply be overlooked. These animals are highly adoptable but need some TLC and visibility.
-
We take the animals into our care, treat them, spay/neuter them, bathe them, etc.
-
We show the animals to potential adopters and if they appear to make a good match for permanent companionship, we ask the potential adopter to fill out an application.
-
The application is either reviewed by one of our trained volunteers. The adopter is approved or not approved. If approval is denied, a clear explanation is given.
-
If the adoption take place, the adoption contract is signed which states that adopter will care for the animal but return the animal to us if they can not keep the animal for any reason.
-
Our adoption fee is usually $125 per dog, which covers shots, worming and spay/neuter. To adopt one of our senior dogs, the fee is $50 and THAT is a bargain because our senior dogs are wonderfully easy to care for and low maintenance. They usually just need a lap to sit on.
Adoption Process
On-site adoptions take place at our PetsMart adoption location every weekend. You must complete an adoption application and be approved by one of our volunteers.
