Butler County Humane Society

Happy Endings!!

One of our successful adoptions was Howie. He wrote us the following letter to tell us how well he is doing with his new family:

Dear Butler County Humane Society,

This is Howie! I'm sorry its taken so long to get you an updated note and pictures of me at my new home, but it takes a lot longer to do things when you don't have opposite thumbs...but I did want to let you know that I've settled in with my new family very well and Im very happy here. In fact, I even have brother to play with. His name is Cody, and he is a Spaniel/Border Collie mix. We get along just wonderfully. We go for walks together, and we even run around and wrestle with each other! He usually wins though. (Don't be misled by his small size, he's feisty and clever!.) But don't worry; he knows he's not allowed to eat my food (though I wish I could eat some of his)!

Were going to be moving soon to a bigger home. You know what that means! More room to run around and get into trouble. And there's even a nice yard for me to play in, and other dogs I can make friends with. I hope everything is going well. Thanks for taking such good care of me!

From Howie

Another successful adoption was Tucker. His story is a long one but, but his family wanted to let us know how he is and about his amazing story:

To the caring workers at BCHS,

This may be a long story, but it is worth the read in the end. Five years ago, my husband had a 1 1/2 year old chocolate lab puppy named Hershey. After being tied outside at night for the first time, Hershey came up missing the next morning. My husband searched for months for Hershey and even offered a generous reward if found. To no avail, we didn't find Hershey. A few months later we adopted a black lab from the Clarion Humane Society. We named him Ozzy. Ozzy was a very loveable and obedient dog. I also had a dog at the time, a Jack Russell named Casey. Last fall, Ozzy died in his sleep after being sick for a few months. Tragically, this spring, my dog Casey was struck and killed by a passing car. In less than a year we had lost both of our dogs. It only took me less than a week to visit your shelter with my 2 year old son in search of a new dog. Knowing my husband had always missed his chocolate lab, I was hoping that was what I would find. That is when I met Tucker. He was the first and only dog I visited at your shelter. It only took me 15 minutes to realize Tucker was our new pet. He was loveable, playful, and great with me son. I thought it was interesting that Tucker was also the same age as Hershey would be if he was still with us. Tucker was found in Northern Butler County very close to where we live. Tucker didn't like other dogs, but that wasn't a problem because he would be our only pet. So I adopted Tucker to surprise my husband. As soon as I brought Tucker home, he jumped up on my husband and then went right up to sit in front of our front door. My husband and I looked at each other puzzled. Tucker was acting like he knew where he was. My husband and I were both thinking the same thing: could this be Hershey? Hershey did not have many markings on him, but he did have two. A slight white mark on his chest and a slight golden tail. Tucker had both of these markings. Within 24 hours more similarities appeared. Tucker did not respond well to his name, so we called him Hershey just to see what he would do, and he responded immediately. Tucker wrestled with my husband in a game called the blanket game that he played with Hershey as a puppy. I also tied Tucker outside while I was doing some gardening, and sure enough he barked and hated it, just like the night Hershey came up missing. Tuckers dislike for other dogs can also be explained b/c my husband taught Hershey as a puppy to be very protective and to get that dog out of my yard, this was a cue for him to bark at other dogs. We are now 100% sure that Tucker is our Hershey that we have missed for 5 years. What a miracle! My husband doesn't cry, but this brought tears to his eyes. His long lost friend had returned. We now have had Tucker/Hershey for about a month and we are so happy to have him back. He is a wonderful dog for our family and needless to say, he is a very special house dog. It is obvious that Hershey has been cared for by someone over the last few years and I am sure that someone is missing him just as much as we did, but we are grateful to have him home. It was sad to lose Ozzy and Casey in such a short time, but if it wasn't for their loss, we wouldn't have been reunited with Hershey. We are very thankful for your shelter and the care you provided Tucker over the few months he was with you. I hope your shelter enjoys our miraculous story and that it is shared with many others in your workplace. Thanks again for everything that you do for our pets!

Sincerely,

Megan

Yet another successful adoption. This time the story is about our brown spaniel named Jamie.

It was a very worthwhile trip on Sunday. We ended up choosing Jamie for Pap. Pap did like Leroy, but he and Barney just wouldn't get along. Barney is very defensive, especially around another male dog. Initially, Pap did not want anything to do with Jamie as he felt she was too big. Mom and I talked to him and felt that she would be a great companion, and he gave her another chance. It appears that Jamie-even though she has that hip problem-is a great companion dog and that there wasn't too much interest in her. She went home on Sunday, and by noon yesterday, had fit in perfectly-sleeping at Paps feet, telling everyone when she had to go outside, and she really is a beautiful dog. I cannot say enough positive things about the staff at the BCHS. They were all so patient with Pap and the menagerie of dogs we brought up. I will get a picture to you with the other dogs as soon as I stop by again. I am really glad we chose to come to Butler. I think Pap has a great dog. Thanks again! PS Leroy did get adopted by a family with young children while we were there, so that is good-he was a good dog.

Jennifer and Robert wanted to share their story about a shelter dog they adopted from the BCHS named Clara, in Clara's point of view:

To all the caring workers at the BCHS,

I was adopted by a loving family back on Dec 27,2007. Some of you may not remember me (Clara), the big black lab with the orange collar. Well lets see where I should start. When my family brought me home, I found that they had a lot of room for me to run around and play. I also found out that there were kids for me to play with too. After we were home a week, my family and I loaded a big white truck up with all kinds of clothes and food and even food and treats for me and started to travel all over the United States. That is when they nicknamed me  Truck Driving Clara, which I like. We were gone a long time from home, so I made myself at home in the truck, and they gave me toys to play with. I got tons of treats every time I would go out and go to the bathroom for them every time that we would stop. I got to meet a lot of different people, but there is one guy that I like a lot, and he has a chocolate lab puppy that I would play with every time we would see them.

My family takes really good care of me, and they make sure that I have food and water everyday. They also take me to groomers every month when we would come home form being on the road. I also got to play with my kids when I would come home. There is one kid named Dalton that climbs all over me and leads me around the house, which I love. There is also another little boy named Riley that climbs all over me too. There are so many things that I do when we are home that I don’t know what all to type. My family made me a nice blanket that I lay on at night. I also get all kinds of stuffed animals to play with.

Now my family is home for good. I don’t mind traveling and meeting new people, but I would rather be at home with my family playing with the kids. They take me places with them when they are not at work. The only time that I am outside is when I have to go to the bathroom and go out to play , or when I just want to sit outside and relax in the sunshine. They take me for long car rides too.  I wish that I had pictures to show you of my family and I all together, but I will get some and send them to you.
