TYLER BASSE SHARES HIS BIRTHDAY WITH BCHS ANIMALS

Shelter animals have birthdays too. It is impossible to know the birthdays of the animals that come into the shelter, but that doesn't mean those birthdays should go unrecognized. Luckily for the animals at the shelter, nice people like Tyler Basse of Towanda share their birthday with them. Tyler and his family adopted their dog Trixie, several years ago and wanted to do something special for other dogs like her. Tyler celebrated his 11th birthday September 21, 2008 and elected to have friends bring treats and pet food for the animals rather than presents. Tyler is in the 5th grade and a student at St. Agnes. Thanks to Tyler and all your friends for sharing your birthday with the shelter animals this year.

Awards Presented to Outstanding Volunteers

Kelly Pakes of Rome and Robin Lutz of Serpicos Pizza and Restaurant were recently recognized for their outstanding achievement as volunteers with the Bradford County Humane Society. Kelly has been a volunteer at the Ulster animal shelter for nearly a decade. She manages the shelters website and visits the shelter weekly to take photos of new adoptable animals. She then posts the updated photos with information about each animal onto the BCHS website. She also assists with choosing the shelter featured pets for the week. Kelly’s dedication, talent and skills have helped bring awareness to the shelters mission by reaching out to people through the internet. The BCHS website has helped countless abandoned pets get a second chance. BCHS would like to express our since thanks to Kelly for being such a dedicated part of our volunteer team.

Robin Lutz and the staff at Serpicos Pizza in Wysox have also played a big part in bringing awareness to shelter animals, whether they have been abused or abandoned the Serpicos team want you to know about the wonderful animals that are at the Bradford County Humane Society. With donation cans in their store and posters on display in the front window, with photos and stories, they help bring a voice to shelter animals in many ways. Eagle Scout Project Helps to Beautify BCHS

Matt Kocan of Notre Dame High School is working to earn his Eagles Scout award, the highest rank in Scouting. Matt has organized a complete overhaul of the Bradford County Humane Society memorial garden, a special place to remember our loving four legged companions that have passed.

This makeover will help beautify the grounds of the Ulster animal shelter, not only for our pets that have passed, but also for the many homeless animals still awaiting their second chance to be loved. Sullivan County 4H members and fellow Notre Dame High School seniors volunteered their time at the shelter with Matt to beautify the garden with landscaping and fresh paint to the Rainbow Bridge. The BCHS Rainbow Bridge has been a longtime symbol of where our beloved pets go to run and play until they are one day reunited with us.

You can join Matts mission to beautify Bradford County Humane Society for our special friends. You can donate your time or supplies this summer and fall and give something back to our four legged companions who have brought us friendship and unconditional love. Contact Carmen at BCHS at (570) 888-2114 or email bradfordchs@cqservices.com Needed: removal of bushes (chainsaw needed for this), weeds and poison ivy, bags of mulch or white rocks to line dog path, mowing and other landscaping.

A number of area businesses also donated supplies to help with the project. BCHS would particularly like to thank the following businesses for their outstanding generosity for providing essential building supplies for this project: Milanhurst Nurseries, Agway, Rainbow Gardens & Gifts in Towanda, Lowes in Sayre, Wysox Sand & Gravel, Bishops Hardware in Ulster, Wal-Mart in Sayre and Souto Mould in Milan.

BCHS would also like to thank the following volunteers for their outstanding achievement: Matt, Art and Linda Kocan, James Dewey, Matt Constantine, Ryan Davis, Chris Matthews, and Sullivan County 4H volunteers: Regan McCarty, Julie Polcrack, Kelsey Leljedal, Melissa Krause, Michele Potuck, Jackie Marchant, Anna and Bill Cermack, and Jeanine Richlin.

8 Year Old Lanaya Kenyon "Makes it Grow" for BCHS

This past week I was greeted by 8 year old, Lanaya Kenyon from Troy. Lanaya had come to make a donation to benefit the homeless animals at Bradford County Humane Society. Always curious of what sparks the interest of our younger generation to give to our cause, I asked Lanaya if she was making a donation as part of a girl scout, 4H or similar project. She explained that her donation was not part of any club project, but a gift that she had collected from members of her church, Leona United Methodist in Troy.

Lay Minister Jody Kenyon had given one dollar to every child in the congregation and told them to “make it grow”. Lanaya made her dollar grow by asking fellow church members to match her dollar as a gift to the humane society. Several church members matched her dollar, accompanied with letters to God. This act of kindness and generosity from someone so young really touched my heart. I wanted to share this story and encourage anyone and everyone, regardless of age, to continue Lanaya’s mission and make your dollar grow to help an animal in need.

Photo: Lanaya Kenyon and her grandmother Joan Grace

Lanaya’s act of kindness will help animals like Sorry, a Rottweiler/ German Shepherd. Sorry was spotted by several people running as a stray in the Milan area for days until the one day he was spotted covered with blood. He had been shot. A scattered gun shot wound to his right leg left him unable to use his leg, the injury draining him of life and energy. Humane Officers were then called and Sorry was taken to the Humane Society in Ulster, where he was soon treated by a local vet. He is now on his road to recovery, but every day is a challenge. He will need special attention and vet care for several weeks until his leg properly heals. We may never know who or why Sorry was shot, but we hope Lanaya’s act of kindness can encourage others to start their own “make it grow” mission and help him and other animals who have been mistreated and/ or abandoned.

AREA TEEN GIRLS ORGANIZE CAR WASH TO BENEFIT ABUSED HORSES

Haley Edsell, age 12 and Brittany Meyers age 15, from Northeast Bradford School could not stand by and do nothing after hearing about neglected horses recently seized by Bradford County Humane Officers. "My mom is who told me about this one day after my riding lesson. The next day I told my friend all about it. Then we started to try to book places for fundraisers. We were so devastated by the pictures that we knew we had to book someplace to help" Edsell says. With the help of her friend Brittany, together they organized a benefit car wash to help the seized horses. "I was motivated to help as I desire to become a veterinarian when I get older and the fact that animals need our help" Meyers said.

A charity car wash will be held at the P&C grocery story in Wysox, Saturday, June 7th from 10am - 5pm with the help of friends and fellow students. All proceeds will go to the Bradford County Humane Officer Fund to help provide medical care, food and supplies for the 10 seized horses. Haley has a love for horses and currently takes riding lessons. She also has one cat and 3 dogs.

TOWANDA 5TH GRADE ENRICHMENT CLASS DONATES CLASS PROJECT PROCEEDS TO BCHS

The fifth grade enrichment students at Towanda Area Elementary School recently finished a business unit. Under the direction of Mrs. Meredith Lezak, the students were exposed to many of the facets of owning a business including deciding on a product to produce, planning materials and facilities, securing capital, creating advertising, bookkeeping, and practicing sales techniques. The group decided to give their money to a local charity. The students chose to give the money they raised from the sale of their products to the Bradford County Humane Society in Ulster. The Humane Society in turn gave the class a presentation on the many services they offer along with some feel good adoption stories. Jan Morrow Primary School teacher, Mrs. Beirne-Getz, recently presented donations on behalf of her kindergarten students. Mrs. Beirne-Getz asked the children to consider making a donation to benefit the many animals at the Ulster animal shelter instead of bringing her Christmas gifts this past December. Items were collected the month of December and delivered personally by Mrs. Beirne-Getz and 6th grade Towanda student, Ali Sparrow. Donations from the children included; pet food, supplies and blankets.

In addition to the kindness of the Kindergarten students from Jan Morrow Primary School, Wyalusing Valley High School Seniors, Colleen Cobb and Craig Fenton recently presented the Bradford County Humane Society with a generous gift. As part of their senior project the two seniors held a volleyball tournament to raise funds to benefit the many homeless or neglected animals in their area. Cobb said they had a "Pay to Play" tournament, admission fees as well as a concession stand, all to raise money to help the animals. Cobb and Fenton presented the shelter with a check for $350.00 along with blankets and towels for the animals.

"We truly appreciate the kindness and thoughtfulness of all of these students and we are grateful Mrs. Beirne-Getz who has taught her students a valuable life lesson about human kindness and giving to others less fortunate" said a BCHS spokesperson. December Birthdays Means Christmas for the Animals at Ulster Shelter

December birthdays bring a special Christmas gift to the pets at Bradford County Humane Society this year. Friends and classmates, Brynn Martin and Shannon Raezer of Mrs. Collins 3rd grade class at Ulster Elementary recently celebrated their 9th birthday together. Instead of asking for gifts this year, these two girls asked friends and classmates to donate something for the animals for the holidays. These girls are no strangers of animals, Brynn has a Golden Retriever named Molly and Shannon shares her home with a variety of pets from 4 dogs to guinea pigs.

Nicholas (9) and Nathan (8) Maylock of Towanda also celebrated this season of giving. As part of their December birthdays, their wish was to help give animals a special Christmas gift by putting the needs of abandoned or neglected animals first.

Together, Brynn and Shannon, Nicholas and Nathan, and all of their friends, helped the animals at the Ulster animal shelter this holiday season with their generous donations of pet food, treats, and toys. While some of the animals at the shelter may not get the gift of a new home and loving family, the generosity and kindness of these students have given them a gift a love.

While we would love to see all of our animals get a loving home, adopting a new pet for Christmas can be a traumatic experience for a new pet. We encourage you to visit the Bradford County Humane Society after the hustle and bustle and holiday chaos. Come and visit Rachael, a very sweet, 2 year old hound mix, Cookie, a gentle natured, Labrador Retriever mix, or Oreo, a sweet and loving female pitbill mix. We also have neutered cats and new kittens available. Click the "AVAILABLE PETS" link at left to view a complete list of wonderful pets waitng for a loving home.

On behalf of all the staff at Bradford County Humane Society we wish everyone in the community a very wonderful holiday season!

Wyalusing Elementary Students Give Back for the Holidays

Wyalusing Elementary students, 5th grader Katie Benjamin and her brother Isaac Benjamin, expressed their early holiday spirit by organizing a special fundraiser to give Christmas to the homeless and neglected animals at Bradford County Humane Society. Each class at Wyalusing Elementary participated in their "Christmas For the Animals" fundraiser by collecting donations, pet food and supplies. Their efforts helped to raise over $300.00 worth of donations for the Ulster animal shelter. Pictured is the class who collected the most donations, Mrs. Otis' fifth grade class. "Can we do it again next year?" Katie asked as donation cans were collected from her school. Bradford Co. Humane Society would like to extend their thanks to ALL who participated in the first "Christmas for the Animals" fundraiser. We know Katie and her brother look forward to doing their fundraiser again next year. "It is these acts of kindness from the children of our community that really make us smile" says a staff member from the Ulster animal shelter. "We are really touched when we see kids join together to show that you don't have to be big to make a big difference, thank you to all the students and staff at Wyalusing Elementary", said Carmen Arey, BCHS Business Manager.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT BENEFITS SHELTER DOGS

When James Homan of Athens decided to pursue an Eagle Scout award, he thought the Bradford County Humane Society might be a worthy receiver. He was right because the Society can always use another dog walk trail and that is what James wanted to accomplish. Over several (hot) days in September, James, accompanied by his father, worked hard to clear a path through the property's tangled overgrowth. Thanks to James, the Ulster shelter now has a second dog walk for their volunteers and adopters to use. The Eagle Scout project is the highest level of achievement a Boy Scout can earn. The Humane Society, not to mention the dogs there, certainly feel he has earned it!

LOCAL GIRLS HOLD RAFFLE TO BENEFIT FOR SHELTER

The Bradford County Humane Society recently received a donation earned through the creative fundraiser efforts of two young women, Annalis Tilley and Hope Raezer, both of Ulster. The two friends decided that they could hold a raffle during their family's Labor Day campout weekend. They sold raffle tickets with one of the winnings listed as a four wheeler! The joke was on the ticket buyers however, because the 4-wheeler was a plastic one purchased at a dime store. They said no one had a problem with their joke since the proceeds went to the shelter. Annalis has raised money for BCHS in the past, via holding a lemonade stand during her mother's yard sales. Together the two girls own 6 dogs, 1 cat, 2 guinea pigs, 2 goats, 1 pig and an assortment of gold fish.

The Bradford County Humane Society recently held a successful Dog Walkathon. On the afternoon of June 3rd, volunteers who raised donations prior to the event, walked the shelter's dogs. The group followed the Merill Parkway with an interlude at the boat launch for the dogs' sniffing enjoyment. Afterwards refreshments were served at Osram Sylvania.

What is doubly good about this fundraiser, said BCHS board member, Claudia Goodenow, is that the dogs could have an outing, while helping raise money on their behalf. Special thanks to Osram Sylvania for providing the use of their facilities and to local schools that approved the Walkathon as a community service event for their students.

Without the assistance of volunteers, our mission of alleviating pain and suffering of animals and promoting the humane treatment of all living things, would not be possible. Thank you, shelter volunteers, for creating so many happy endings for so many of our needy animal companions for so many years. The BCHS Board and staff thank you each and every one of you.

They also spent a Sunday afternoon gathering supplies for the shelter by asking shoppers at a local grocery store to make donations. The Bronze Award Project is the highest award a junior Girl Scout can achieve. It took the girls three years to fulfill all the requirements including this final, 15 hour long, community service project. Their decision to help the animals was a unanimous one, they said, because they all love animals. Cassandra owns two cats, Kaitlin owns a dog, a rabbit and a cat and Beth owns two dogs. Herman, a favorite shelter beagle, agreed to pose with the girls before they visited the cat room to hand out the toys.

This is the second year the brothers, both born in December, asked their friends to give them animal supplies for birthday gifts. At home they tend to the needs of their two cats, Simon and Sandy, who were adopted from the shelter years ago. They also have turtles and fish. Special thanks to both young men for including the shelter's pets during this season of giving.

BCHS Welcomes Volunteer Colin Sutliffe

Bradford County Humane Society would like to welcome Colin Sutcliffe of Towanda. Colin joined us as a volunteer because he felt the animals housed here "need love and help." Colin also recently adopted one of our senior dogs, Dale (in photo), because he was impressed by Dale's gentlemanly manners. Thanks for helping our homeless pets Colin. We can put love and help to good use around here!

Motorcycle ride becomes pet project for BCHS

If you happened to be driving along routes 6, 187, 87, and 220 on June 10th and noticed a group of motorcyclists zipping by, you were probably witnessing the "Leah Gallup high school class project fundraiser" in action. This spring Leah, a high school junior from Towanda Area Junior Senior High wanted to get started on her senior class project and since her family are motorcycle enthusiasts and she loves pets, decided why not join the two. Leah decided to hold a motorcycle rally for the Bradford County Humane Society. So Leah enlisted the help of her family to post signs up in their workplace and she posted them at her high school. She then planned a 60 mile ride and asked participants to sign in by making a $10 donation. To cover all areas, Leah enlisted Charlie Dull of Wyalusing to follow the group with a truck and trailer in case of breakdowns. CraftMaster Manufacturing Inc. (CMI) agreed to let the rally begin and end at their company pavilion in Wysox. With the help of her mother, Laurie Taylor and Jackie Johnson (CMI) to cook, and with donations from CMI, a barbecue luncheon was offered at the end of the ride. Leah also welcomed and gathered animal supplies from any who didn't ride but wanted to donate. As you may have witnessed on June 10th, Leah's project was a big success. In one day's time Leah raised both cash and donations for the humane society. The shelter and the shelter pets thank Leah her for picking them for this, her "pet" project.

BCHS volunteer writes about it

The Board of the Bradford County Humane Society was recently treated to a book reading by an aspiring 12-year-old novelist, Aubri Mosier of Ulster.

It was the story of Aubri's volunteering at the shelter in the summer of 2005 and her adoption of one of the abandoned puppies who arrived while she was there.

Aubri said that when she started her work at the shelter her mother told her she was not to bring home "even a spider." But this particular beagle-lab mix managed to find his way into Aubri's, and then into her family's heart.

Aubri, in conjunction with her teacher, Mrs. O'Connor of Northeast Bradford Elementary, wrote and illustrated this true life story. Aubri then donated a hardbound copy to the shelter, entitled "Mitchel's Life."

Aubri is continuing her volunteer work at the shelter this summer, which she plans to fit in around her active sports schedule.

Lynch/Bustin Elementary supports BCHS

When Mrs. Carl's third grade read about animals this spring, they decided they would like to help the Bradford County Humane Society. To do so they challenged the entire Lynch/Bustin Elementary School in Athens to donate supplies. In return they would sponsor a party for the winning grade. The response took three people with a dolly to unload the "over 500 items" they collected. Pictured are two of the unloaders, Mrs. Carl and her assistant's daughter, Jordan Kerrick. Though the official winners of the contest were Mrs.Kreiders' 4th grade class, the real winners are the pets at the shelter.

Thank you, Lynch/Bustin Elementary!

4-H Club visits BCHS

The gardens around the Bradford County Humane Society received a pleasant spring face-lift on Memorial Day Saturday when 4-H club members from Sullivan County volunteered their expertise as part of their 2006 4-H County Council community service. The group consisting of (Left to Right) Julie Polcrack, Kelley Dieffenbach, Regan McCarty, Jeannine Richlin (leader), and Markay Richlin, spent the morning weeding and then planting various flowering plants that they contributed. They then spent the afternoon romping with the shelter's canine residents. It was a tossup as to whether the girls or the dogs had more fun.

Introducing our New Pet Therapy Volunteers: Alice and Cinnamon

BCHS would like to welcome our new Pet Therapist, Alice Durham from Sayre, and her canine companion, Cinnamon, who will soon be familiar monthly visitors at the Martha Lloyd senior residences in Troy.

Pet visits to such facilities are viewed as therapeutic because the animals offer unconditional, nonjudgmental love and affection.

Research has shown that introducing pets into nursing homes or similar organizations serves to enhance social interaction and improve people's moods.

Bradford County Humane Society supports this valued service and offers it throughout Bradford County. If you are interested in becoming a Pet Therapist volunteer, come to the Ulster shelter and ask for more information.

BCHS participates in Bradford County Library Pet Education Programs

The Bradford County Humane Society has been invited to team with the Bradford County libraries during this summer's literacy programs entitled "Paws, Claws, Scales, Tales" and "Paws to Read." Beginning in April, Joe Buttito and his famed German Shepherd, Alpha (in photo), began making rounds to demonstrate proper ways to live with and care for animals. Joe, a certified dog behaviorist/trainer and a volunteer for the shelter, has been helping BCHS spread the word about animals and their care since 2004.

New Volunteer Brittany Lowen

BCHS welcomes our newest volunteer, Brittany Lowen of Towanda, who has been joining us on Saturdays to help out wherever she is needed. Sometimes she walks the dogs, sometimes she socializes with the cats, she's even bathed our cat, Mosey (in the photo). Recently Brittany worked miracles with a very large donation of used printer cartridges. She spent several ink-spattered, grueling hours packaging over 80 lbs. worth so they can be shipped toward our Cash For Critters recycling refund. Thank you Brittany! Both our staff and our pets appreciate the time you’ve shared with us.

Brittany tells Mosey how wonderful he smells now that he got his first bath.
