LOST/FOUND PETS

• ACT NOW - do not wait for your pet to find its own way home.
• If your pet is micro chipped, contact the monitoring company. Most of these companies
  will issue alerts to vets and others in your area about your lost pet.
• Ask your neighbors if any of them have seen your pet.
• Call your local Animal Control Officer / Police.
• Call your county SPCA (listed in the phone book, or do an Internet search).
• Contact rescue groups in your area (list available upon request) to see if anyone has turned
  in an animal fitting your pet’s description or if anyone has contacted them about such an animal.
  Be sure to email Stray Cat Blues at savingstrays@yahoo.com. If possible include a picture of your pet.
• Put a classified ad in your local newspaper.
• Call veterinarians in your area to see if your pet has been brought in injured.
• Create a flyer with a description/picture of your pet. Post the flyer in places such as vet offices,
  grocery stores, Post Offices, pet stores, libraries, schools and restaurants. If you offer a reward in
  the flyer, be sure that anyone responding to your flyer is legitimate before paying out any reward.
  If you are suspicious, contact police. If anyone demands money for the return of your pet, immediately
  contact the police (also keep in mind that they may, or may not, actually have your pet).
• Check with the local sanitation department. If your pet has been killed by a car, they may have been
  notified to remove the remains.

• ACT IMMEDIATELY to find this pet’s owner; the owner may be frantically searching for this pet.
• See if the pet belongs to any of your neighbors.
• Call your local Animal Control Officer / Police.
• Call your county SPCA (listed in the phone book, or do an Internet search).
• Contact rescue groups in your area (list available upon request) to see if anyone has reported a missing pet.
• Place a non-descriptive advertisement in your local newspaper (you want the owner to make a positive
  identification).
• Call veterinarians in your area to see if anyone has reported the animal lost. See if your vet will scan
  the animal for a microchip.
• Create a flyer. Post it in places such as vet offices, grocery stores, Post Offices, pet stores, libraries,
  schools and restaurants.
• If the animal is injured, seek veterinary care. Be aware that the vet will likely charge you for the cost
  of care provided.

If your search fails to turn up an owner of the animal, then you will need to look to place the animal with a rescue or find him a home. Unfortunately, many pets are abandoned to the streets by their owners when they are no longer willing or able to care for them.

We can see if any of our fosters are able to take in the cat you have found. If we are unable to take the cat, or you are not in our service area, we will send you a list of other area rescues and shelters as well as a Pet Placement guide which will give you ideas for placing the cat yourself. If you must take an animal to a shelter, please make sure that you understand their policies for euthanizing animals. See if you can arrange with the shelter to contact you in the event that the animal is scheduled for euthanasia. In addition, you should contact the shelter daily to check on the animal. In the event that the animal is scheduled for euthanasia, please be prepared to retrieve the animal and find it other suitable temporary housing while you work to find it a home. The effort you put into this is worth it!!
