We are a non-profit puppy rescue organization. We bring puppies down from Moosonee
and Moose Factory, located on the fringe of James Bay, Ontario,
to save them from being trapped and shot. Our affiliation is with
Moosonee PUPs (Preventing Unwanted Puppies). For more information
on this organization and their mission, please go to www.moosoneepups.com.
There are no vets or animal shelters in Moosonee and Moose Factory.
It is up to us to protect and care for these outstanding dogs.
The dogs in Moosonee and Moose Factory tend to run loose as they
are not often, if ever, allowed in the house by their owners. There
are no vets up there to spay or neuter so the dogs breed freely.
The organization PUP (Preventing Unwanted Puppies) sends a vet up
three times a year at a cost of about $5000 per trip to spay or
neuter as many adult dogs as possible--but puppies are still being
born.
Puppies are found living under houses, in the bush or wandering
stray. Often, the mother has been trapped and shot, so young pups
are left to fend for themselves. If we did not rescue them and bring
them south the puppies would be rounded up and killed.
Our rescue workers in Moosonee care for the puppies until they
are able to travel to us in Bracebridge. The puppies are sometimes
flown to Timmins, or they ride the Polar Bear Express Train to Cochrane.
Lloyd Richards Moving Company sometimes trucks them to Bracebridge
where we meet them at the side of the road or we drive north to
get them. There is quite a network of people working to save these
outstanding dogs.
We sometimes receive dogs from Atiwapiskat, which is even further
north than Moosonee/Moose Factory. The dogs up there suffer terribly,
mostly from human ignorance, which leads to cruelty and abuse. We
have expanded our rescue services to include Northern Ontario in
general. Some pups are now coming from Timmins, Kirkland Lake and
Kapuskasing.
