Their animals come from puppy mills and these are filthy, cruel and abusive places. The puppies are most often sick and their mothers are bred time and time again with no rest and little care. A darkness hangs over puppy mills where dogs are bred purely for greed. There are 1200 to 1800 puppy mills in Quebec and their dogs are trucked into Ontario.

This past summer I visited a puppy mill high in the mountains of Quebec. I had been asked to check on the conditions of this particular place as it had been raided and a group of rescuerers wanted to know if the changes that had been ordered had been made. Since no one in Quebec knew me I was the one to go. My daughter and I made the trip and returned with four dogs. Two of them were Shih-Tzus that were about to be fed to wolves because they were no longer useful. One was epeleptic and could no longer breed and the other was just four months old but she had a cherry eye condition so rather than pay for surgery they were disposing of her. Feeding dogs to wolves saves on vet bills and removes any trace of the dogs ever exisiting in case of a raid. I paid $200 per dog and quickly opened their cage doors. Once I crossed back into Ontario I pulled into the Information Centre to let the dogs out. I had also claimed a Britany Spaniel for $200 that was chained to a filthy dog house way in the back of the property so she could be forgotten and $250 for a Lhasa Apso that was chained to a car. We all paused a moment to celebrate freedom and I named one of the Shih-Tzus Trillium in order to represent Ontario. I still have Trillium, the dog who can no longer breed and my daughter has Rosa, the one with the cherry eye. The Brittany and the Lhasa both found good homes as well. I tell this story to demonstrate some of the puppy mill behaviour I have witnessed first hand. Humanity produces some of the saddest of creatures at times.

The Meaning of Rescue
Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm bed,
I'd like to open my baggage lest I forget.
There is so much to carry
So much to forget

Hmm yes, there it is, right on top:
Let's unpack Lonliness, Heartache and Loss
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things and take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage,
Will you still want me?

Please note that we only place our baby puppies where there is someone home during the day. We are offered such wonderful opportunities through these dogs and they deserve the very best we can get them.

WARNING: One of the pups we placed some time ago died tragically. Her name was Maybe and she was in her crate, wearing her collar. She must have been trying to get out and her collar caught on the crate and she hung herself. Her family wanted me to warn others about the risk of placing a dog with a collar in a crate. Words cannot express how we feel so I won't even begin. Sweetness and joy to Maybe.

We attended a protest for a puppy mill in Quebec and after discovering that dogs were left in a dark, airless building without food or water each weekend I felt such sadness that I wondered why we were obeying societies rules. I am sure worse happens during the week but as I stood there in the 90 degree heat the cruelty of that moment mattered most. There were three police cars at the protest but nothing we said or did could get them to go into the building to see for themselves and then respond accordingly. We held a peaceful protest, signed a petition to charge the puppy mill owner, stayed out of the way of oncoming cars, we chanted and then went home. Not one dog saw the light that day. Horror continues in a lawful society. I am not advocating violence but I have to believe there is more we can do without becoming heathens ourselves.

I would like to suggest that everyone get their dogs checked for Heartworm this year. So many New Orleans dogs have come into Ontario since Katrina that there may be many more cases of Heartworm than we have seen before.
