Our Featured Pets....

Chubby

Scout

Chubby is a sweet hearted girl. She is very gentle and great with children. She loves to go outside and play and run and stretch her legs. Chubby loves to have her ears scratched and she gives sweet little kisses. She is a jack Russell mix and shouldn't get much taller. She was born in November 2008. When she was inside she was doing well with crate training. She would stay in her crate all night and go out first thing in the morning! She is just the right size to be an inside or outside dog.

Scout is a young kitten born in July 09. He is a very sweet kitten, healthy and up-to-date with his vaccinations. He will be very pretty when grown, where he is white, he positively glows. He also has some other siblings waiting for new homes. Any of them would make great companions.

SPAR has a variety of puppies, young dogs and kittens that would make excellent family pets. They are healthy and playful and ready for a new home. All have have their shots, are on flea/tick/parasite medication and are or will be spayed/neutered at the correct age. Please consider adopting a rescued pet.

The Shawnee Animal Shelter's Animal Rescue Center (ARC) has some very nice homeless cats, puppies and adult dogs. Please consider adopting from the Shelter if you are thinking of getting a pet. The Animal Rescue Center's website is @: www.arcshawnee.org

October 16th was National Feral Cat Day. While SPAR was unable to hold any activities this year, we do support the trap-neuter-return (TNR) approach for helping feral felines and we help where we can and we help several feral cat colonies with food that is donated from Buford White Lumber, Walmart, Atwoods, Kmart. We need volunteers who understand cats and the care they need. Also we have very few cat foster parents or places like barns, etc. to take the cats to live. We do not have the funds for a shelter yet, but we hope someday to be able to and make Shawnee a no kill city. Millions of cats are destroyed at city shelters across the nation each year. Please visit Alley Cat Allies @ www.alleycats.org to learn more about how you can help.

SPAR's fiscal year started in June and we would like to remind you that this is the time to send you your membership dues for the coming year. They are tax deductible. Thankyou in advance for your continuing support of Saving Pets At Risk!

YOUR HELP NEEDED

If you have ever wished that there was something you could do to help poor lost and abandoned pets we urge you to contact SPAR and learn about ways we can help SAVE PETS AT RISK. We are desperate for more foster homes, kitten and puppy season is here. SPAR pays for all medical costs for the animals. Anyone who has a fenced yard or room for a pet and can offer some TLC for these poor creatures would be greatly appreciated and it is a very rewarding feeling when a pet finds a new home, it makes it all worth while. We can only help more pets if we are supported by the community. For more information about fostering a pet go to the Foster A Pet page.

SPAR would like anyone who has a good dog house they are not using to consider donating it to SPAR as we are running short on shelters for the pets. Wire pet crates and Pet Taxi's are also greatly appreciated.

DISASTER STRIKES UNEXPECTEDLY: PLAN AHEAD

Ice storms? Fires? Floods? Have a disaster plan ready in case you and your pets are faced with a natural or man-made calamity

In the past 3 years, more than 300 animals have been rescued, received vet care and been placed in homes, said Roberta Wortham, President of SPAR. Members of S.P.A.R. are also working with the city of Shawnee to establish a related group, the Animal Rescue Center (ARC). Plans are to build a new facility next to the Shawnee Animal Shelter where animals can live if they've not been adopted. This will designate the city's shelter as a "no kill" shelter, Wortham said. Currently, unadopted animals are euthanized each week, she said. The Animal Rescue Center's new website is @: www.arcshawnee.org

Behavior problems account for the leading cause of owner relinquishment of pets and resulting euthanasia - we all know it and numerous studies confirm it. Often pet parents just need some help in dealing with the issues they are facing. PETVIDEO.COM can help.

Petvideo.com, created by the founders of Petfinder.com and Petsincredible, provides free online training clips. We encourage you to visit petvideo.com to view the same positive, reward-based training advice featured on the award winning PetsIncredible DVDs ; TRAINING YOUR ADOPTED DOG and YOUR ADOPTED CAT.

Update:

Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Bayer Animal Health, Shawnee, Kansas, SPAR has received a free one-year supply of "TRAINING YOUR ADOPTED DOG" and "YOUR ADOPTED CAT" DVDs for all of our dog and cat adopters (Only about 300 organizations were selected.) Bayer has also included fantastic money saving coupons and offers for free flea and tick preventatives inside the DVD cover.
