Become a Foster Parent

Interested in helping our animals in the comfort of your home?  We have many opportunities for you to become a Foster Parent and help many different kinds of animals.  Please contact the shelter for more information.

medically Needy Animals
The Humane Society comes to the rescue of many different animals.

Sometimes our rescues and turn-over animals are physically and mentally ready to be adopted,  sometimes they need a little bit more love and care.  Whether they need a family to nurse them back to health, or work with them on their manners, there are some that just need more "one-on-one" attention than we can give at the shelter.

Sometimes we have animals considered too "old" to be adopted, and really just need a loving family to hold their paw until they cross the "Rainbow Bridge".

Depending on the situation, we have reduced fees and free veterinary care from our resident vet.

If you have room in your home and heart for an animal that really needs your love, please call the shelter or stop down for more information.

Won't You Please Help Us?

KITTENS & PUPPIES
- We are frequently getting little baby animals at the shelter that have been taken away from their mother earlier than they should of.  They are still weeks away from being available for adoption, and really need intensive love and care.  We need Foster Families in place to help care for these animals at home.  They need bottle-feeding and "round-the-clock" care.  The animals that we have vary on a weekly basis, so please call the shelter or stop down to start the Foster Parent process so you can make the difference to those special little animals.

IMPOLITE & UNTRAINED ANIMALS - Animals are always easier to adopt when they have basic manners and are potty-trained.  However, when they are at the shelter it's not so easy to learn when you only get out of your cage once or twice a day.

DOGS:   If you've ever had a dog that you've potty-trained, then you're probably qualified to become a Foster Parent and take home a dog for a couple weeks to give it that extra care and guidance that will make all the difference in getting that dog adopted.  We can give you advice and tips on training the dogs, all you need is the commitment to make the difference.

CATS:  Cats are peculiar creatures.  They have personalities of their own, and if they're not treated with respect and love they can become weary of all people.  We have several cats that don't get adopted simply because they don't "take to people" the way other cats do.  Sitting in a cage at the shelter isn't helping to socialize these cats, so we are looking for Foster Families to take them home, uplift their spirits, and give them a brighter outlook that will help them to get adopted.

dog walkers
What a great way to get your exercise!

The dogs at the shelter are always in desperate need of people to take them for a stroll along the Susquehanna riverbanks... this is the only way our dogs get out of their cages for exercise!  We have a volunteer orientation to answer all of your questions and explain the procedures.  There is also a list of all the dogs and what kind of a walker they are (example "easy walker), so that you can select the right dogs for you.

click here for our DOG WALKING GUIDE

This is a great way to exercise our dogs while getting some exercise yourself.  Contact the shelter for additonal information.
