Samson

(April 2005) Now that we have Samson home, I wanted to thank you for all your help and your consideration.  We love Samson, he fits right in.  He does have a lot of energy, but as he settles in more, he is settling down too.  We walk together several times a day, he loves to chase the ball, and he follows my husband around and never lets him out of sight.  Tonight, as we were watching TV, he very quietly crept up into my lap and curled up.  You wouldn't think such a big guy made a very good lap dog - but he's really lovely.  Thank you again.  We really appreciate all you have done.  Blessings -- Nina

Gracie Rose

(Updated July 2005) Our investigative reporter had news from a happy new owner, Pam, who adopted Bonnie. We at first thought it was Bonnie, of Bonnie and Clyde, but this Bonnie was not the Dalmatian mix originally pictured (that came in with Clyde.) Sorry for the mix up, but we are happy to report that this Bonnie also has a family that adores her. Her new name is Gracie Rose. She has gone from 29 to 57 pounds, undoubtedly because she can open the refrigerator. They have to duct tape it closed (!) They are just thrilled with their new family member.

Clyde

(April 2005) Hi, I adopted Clyde on March 12, 2005. I just wanted to let you know how he is doing. Clyde now has a new name which is Bailey that he responded to very quickly. Bailey is doing great and I am so glad that I have adopted him. He is the BEST dog I have ever had. I can not say enough about Bailey and how sweet he is. He is the love of my life! Bailey adjusted to my house very quickly. My 3 cats are getting used to him. Sometimes my male cat Spencer will try to itimidate him but Bailey just gets right away from him.

My younger brother just moved back into NY state and in with me. He brought along his 8 month old dashound puppy named Jordan who is now Baileys best friend. They play alot together and Bailey is always so gentle with the puppy. I am so glad that my friend Julie, who was with me the day I came to the Humane Society to pick out a dog, pointed out Bailey. He loves to cuddle!! He also enjoys playing with his toys, going for walks and going for rides in the car. Everyone of my neighbors, friends and family love Bailey. But not as much as me! Thanks so much for letting me adopt the greatest dog ever! Patty

Read all the updates on Roofis, who found his "forever" home and a new buddy as well! (Last updates from August 2005)

Roofis came in with a skin condition, so he was an unusual pink shade, as you can see from pictures. But being a sweetie he found a wonderful home, where he also found a good buddy, Duncan, to play and take naps with. The picture top left is Roofis' first night at home, middle top is "naptime"! Roofis looks very happy in both and very comfortable in his new home!

** Updates from Stephanie, his "Mom", in March with an additional picture top right: Roofis and Duncan soaking up the first spot of sunshine. "Things are good, lots of 0 to 60 and back to 0 activity (napping-playing-napping). Roofis is fitting in great, the dogs' play has leveled out so that the little guy isn't getting scratched anymore. I am now concerned that maybe he has some food allergies. I am going to start feeding him chicken w/ yams and am doing research on raw food diets. Thank you again for bringing this joyful and soulful animal into our lives! Best Regards, Stephanie"

**Here is the second update in May 2005 (middle 2 pictures): "Good News! Roofis had an appointment last Tuesday and he is mite free! We have to have his re-check, but we are hopeful! After much agonizing we decided to go ahead with dips. Roofis had been losing more hair and had lost most of the weight he had put on since we adopted him, it was time for a drastic measure. He had his first dip 4 weeks ago and another two weeks later, we are hoping that will be enough. He is now has a solid coat and is up to 57 lbs! Turns out he is a very handsome black and white dog, but of course we all knew he would be quite lovely in time! I especially enjoy the sunshine picture of the two of them on their backs, it was as if Duncan was showing Roofis how best to take advantage of a few rays!

**Here is a third update from August 2005 (bottom 2 pictures). Roofis looks like a different dog - what a difference from in appearance from the photo showing his first night at home. This is why the Humane Society does what we do! We are so happy for Roofis, who is quite the yachtsman and swimmer with his buddy Duncan! His family has really made a difference for this dog!

Merlin and Lex

Some stories are just too good to shorten and this is one:

A St. Patrick's Day Update on Merlin and Lex (formerly Blade & Galaxy) from their new Mommy Maryan:

My husband and I always had and loved black male cats because they have "Catitude". However, after our last, we decided to wait until we retire to get another pet. It wasn't in God's plan, I lost my husband to cancer on 11/11/04, he was 55 years old.

On 12/03/04 at 9:30 A.M., I was on my way back to work from an appointment. While waiting to make a right from Brandywine onto Court Street, I decided to head across the bridge to the Humane Society. The sign on the door read Open at 10:00 A.M. There were cars there, so I went in and announced that I was early, but couldn't come back. The man behind the counter laughed and said "well you could have brought donuts". Within a few minutes a lady came out and I asked if we could enter one of the walk-in cat cages. The cage housed about 6 and two were black male cats. I knew I wanted two cats and they had to get along - this was ideal.

Galaxy was right there purring when I picked him up. Then, I asked the lady to hand me the other black cat named Blade - he was purring and cuddling like he knew me. So, I said "I wanted these two" the lady said "you want both" and I said "yes, these are the ones". I knew I had to shop for food, bowls, treats, toys, litter, litter box after work before picking them up and didn't have my cat carrier, but they offered to lend me one. I couldn't wait to get back to work to tell everyone and even found a photo of Galaxy on the internet to show them.

My guys are purrfect, but the names had to go so I shortened Galaxy to Lex a.k.a. Sexy Lexy with the big amber colored eyes. Blade was just too harsh for my green eyed wonder, so he became Merlin. Galaxy was 6 months old and has since been neutered. He loves to cuddle, I call him velcro cat because he is always in my lap and loves to have his belly rubbed. Merlin a 1.5 yr old is a retriever cat. He loves to bring me his bouncy sponge ball, places it at my feet and looks at me until I throw it - he chases and plays with it, then brings it back for me to throw again. At first I thought it was a fluke, but soon realized he must have been a golden retriever in a past life - he wants to play ball all day. Merlin and Lex are inseparable, they play, clean, sleep and bird watch together (see the attached photos).

Some people may say I rescued two cats from the Humane Society, but my friends and family know that they rescued me. Thank you for the wonderful service that you provide our community.

Sincerely,
Maryan

Turner

A letter (too fun to shorten!) from Turner (a very large, strong, handsome Rottweiler), whose "Mom" sounds amazing!

Hi everyone it's Turner! Me and my new mom thought we would write to let you know how things are going so far! I was a little unsure of things the first night I got to my new home, but quickly got attached to my new mommy. I don't growl at her anymore, she knows I'm not scarey, just a big loveable guy. I tried marking my spot around the house a couple times, but my mommy made sure I went to the bathroom plenty before we went inside, so that didn't work so well. Now I know that's not a good idea, and if I go outside I get LOTS of treats. The next morning was a little rough - I was throwing up. My new mom was so worried about me she took me to the vet where I tried scaring everyone with my growling. They had to clear the waiting room for me, my mom's hands got really tired trying to hold me. The vet said I was ok though, just had to put some weight on! I love to take rides in my mom's Jeep with her, and I LOVE the snow! I've learned to trick my mom into taking me out A LOT throughout the day, but she doesn't mind because I think she knows how much fun the snow is. She bought me a brand new crate, but I didn't like it much, so she lets me sleep in her room with her. I lay on the floor next to her all night and I don't get up until she does. We are going shopping this weekend to get me a new comfy bed to put on the floor in her room so I have my own bed too! My mom keeps telling me what a good boy I am. I don't have accidents in the house, I don't jump on furniture, I don't bother anyone when they are eating and I'm getting better on the leash! All that means TREATS! TREATS! TREATS! She also got me some toys, I didn't want to share them at first, but I don't mind so much now. I think I might try this playing thing soon! I still don't like other dogs, or even the smell of them! Even though I got neutered, I still try to hump some visitors if I can smell another dog on them. I'm not too sure about my new daddy yet. I warm up to him a little bit more everyday. I tend to only growl at him when he tries to pet me while I'm near my mommy. I think I will get better, my mommy says I keep improving. I go for my first training class tomorrow! Keep your fingers crossed.......hopefully Steve can help my mommy walk me....so we can go for walks instead of just around the yard! I will write again and send some pictures of me and my new family soon! Turner

P.S. There is this little guy here, his name is Tyler. I'm not sure about him yet, but I don't growl at him. He doesn't bother me, but I'm not really interested in him yet either. I will try to work on that!

Looks like Turner is enjoying the food and scenery at his new place, but maybe they should put that pizza out of reach!

Sam

An updates on a much transformed Sam (the dog formerly known as China):

Sam, who we all knew as China, was terrified when he first arrived at the shelter. He pathetically displayed extreme submissive behavior in the hopes that these new people would not hurt him. Volunteers and staff worked with Sam, and, after much encouragment, Sam soon became brave enough to go for walks. Even then, at first, he would suddenly be overwhelmed, freeze up, and head back to his run anxiously. Well, Sam was indeed very lucky to be adopted, and is now a much happier, relaxed dog thanks to the great care he is receiving. Below is a former picture of Sam, and 2 pictures of a happier Sam visiting with some of the eople who helped to transform him - making a difference one dog at a time!

Belle

A Happy New Year's update on Belle (formerly Cookie), from her guardian Cathy,

Belle is doing just fine. She is attached to the hip of her big brother, Kodi, and she and our 2 kitties are getting along as well. She made her first journey up the stairs into all 3 bedrooms yesterday to check on Kodi with no problem, and today has been on the deck and playing in the snow. She reminds us both of Arielle, the little girl that we lost in 2003. She has the same kind of spirit and I think that she is amazingly well-adjusted for just a few days. She is eating and drinking and knows right where we keep the "cookies". We are taking her to our vet tomorrow for her initial visit and we are anxious to show her off. Her picture has gone out across the country as we introduced her to our family and friends. We changed her name to "Belle", which means beautiful. Just in case she equates her old life with her old name, we wanted to start her out fresh with only good thoughts. She completes our little family and we are grateful to you all for being her temporary haven until she could come to live with us. We now have a family of rescuees ranging in age from 7 months - Lita - to 10 years - Kodi. We would recommend it to anyone.

Brittany

A very happy ending for Brittany (formerly known as Cleo for a time):

Brittany was brought in from Afton in April 2004, and she spent 7 long months at the shelter. We always wondered why she didn't get adopted, and now we know she was waiting to go home. One lucky day, the daughter of her owners came to look at puppies, and when she walked by "Cleo's" run, she did a double take and recognized Brittany. Brittany had a tattoo from the shelter she had originally been adopted from, and when her leg was checked, there was proof that Brittany was headed home! Her owner came to get her, so Brittany got to go Home 4 The Holidays in November, with many well-wishers fondly (and tearfully) seeing her off!

Maddie

Dec. 22, 2004 update from Maddie (formerly Maggie):

Hi, remember me? I was adopted from your shelter in August 2004. I was only 11 weeks old, and I was sooo cute that everybody wanted me. Well, here I am at 6 months old. I'm still full of piss and vinegar, but I love my new home! Mom takes me for rides in the truck, and I love to look at everything - especially all the kids passing by. I get special treats when I sit and shake. But everything Mom drops on the floor I feel is fair game to me, and I grab it and run. So far I've chewed up a blanket, a pair of shoes, and a brick of cream cheese Mom dropped. She wasn't too mad though because I only got a few canine holes in it. And I did promise to leave the Christmas tree alone. And I love to dig holes in the back yard. Oh well, I do get very calm and loving when it's bed time and even make small noises in my throat when Mom is petting and hugging me. I'm doing a lot better now that I'm growing up. Wishing you all a Happy New Year! Maybe I'll write again when I'm a little older. Love, Maddie

Bailey

Here's a Dec. 16, 2004 update on Bailey (formerly Socks) from Rachel, his guardian:

Bailey, dressed as a little devil, was adopted in November 2003. She is now 16 months old and 42 pounds. She loves her friend and big brother Tigger, who prefers the clown outfit. She loves to sleep under the covers with her new "Mom" and spends her days laying on the back of the couch looking out the window. Bailey and Tigger certainly make quite a pair in their Halloween outfits!

Harold

Here's a Nov. 10, 2004 update on Harold from his guardian, Lois:

Harold came to live in his new home on March 29, 2003. His name was "Two-Face", which simply had to be changed! I disdained of ever finding food that he would eat, but after a month or so he finally chose a menu that he liked. In addition to his dry food, he enjoys chicken, cheese, veggies, and ice cream at bedtime. He spent his first week hiding - so of course he needed a hiding place to sleep and that was my bedroom closet - he still sleeps there on a pillow with his stuffed plush dog. Those fears vanished soon, and now he wants to be petted and hugged constantly, and when I stop, he goes into a sitting position and looks up at me with adoring eyes until I resume. He enjoyes chasing squirrels, and he enjoys taking tennis balls out and scattering them throughout the house. He has no other interest in them - does not "fetch". Harold has a very sweet face, but he looks guarded because he is afraid of cameras. I will close saying Harold is very devoted and we love each other very much.
