SURRENDER TO RESCUE, OR SHELTER ? |

If you have come to the conclusion that you are
unable to place your animal yourself, or feel a shelter or rescue can do
a better job, there are several steps you can take to help your animal find
a new home with them.
1. Have your vet get your pet up to date on all vaccines including the vaccine for Bordetella (also known as Kennel Cough) - this will help your animal to stay healthy in a shelter or rescue, where they are exposed to various illnesses at times. 2. Have your animal spayed or neutered - this is less money the shelter or rescue needs to put out, but also makes your animal more adoptable... they can leave when someone wants them instead of having to wait for a spay/neuter appointment. 3. Honestly observe your dog and it's behaviors. Can you take his food bowl from him while he's eating? Is he good with kids? Good with other animals? The more information you can give the shelter or rescue the more likely your animal is to get a home. People looking for an animal to adopt are automatically more interested in animals that they know something about. 4. Contact the shelter or rescue as early as possible. They may have to put your animal on a waiting list or they may ask you to hold onto your animal a little while longer so they have the chance to make room for it - that way no animals have to be put to sleep to make room for your animal, which is a common thing in animal shelters. Please - just understand that shelters and
rescues have animals needing their services all the time. They may not have
the room or funds to help every animal that comes their way. Please understand
that turning your animal over to a shelter especially, should be your LAST
option - not the first one.
