Our History
The Animal Orphanage is a private, non-profit animal shelter located in Voorhees, New Jersey since 1988, that takes in stray and unwanted animals and places them into new homes. Each year, The Animal Orphanage is responsible for placing approximately 2500 animals annually. The Shelter provides care for approximately 150 animals on a daily basis, thus making The Animal Orphanage one of the largest shelters in the State of New Jersey.

The Animal Orphanage is 100% self-sufficient. We do not receive any money from the County or the State. The shelter operates on annual budget of approximately $225,000. This budget is extremely tight considering the large number of animals that we are able to house daily. This budget is used to pay for such things as veterinary care for the animals, spay/neuter fees, payroll, food, medical supplies, building maintenance, insurance, and utilities. The funds to accommodate this budget are generated in a number of ways. The majority of the money raised through adoption fees, drop off fees, and reclaim fees. In addition to those fees, The Animal Orphanage coordinates about 8-10 fundraising events each year, such as our golf outing, oldies dance and popular plunge just to name a few. The shelter also sends out an annual mailer asking for donations. Finally the shelter has 17 contracts with local municipalities to take in their stray and unwanted pets in exchange for a monthly fee. The combination of all these things allow the shelter to meet and maintain its annual financial goals.

The Animal Orphanage has a paid staff of about 10-12 employees, only three of which are full time, a base of about 50-60 volunteers, and a newly appointed board of directors consisting of nine members. With a hard-working staff and a dedicated group of volunteers The Animal Orphanage is able to claim an 80% adoption rate, which is over double the national average. Unfortunately, we are not always able to find homes for bite cases, badly abused animals, seriously injured animals, terminally ill animals and feral cats. However, as long as an animal is friendly and adoptable we will find it a new home. The shelter is now starting to get more involved in education programs and activities so that hopefully in the future adoption rates can get even higher. The shelter also participates in a pet therapy program where a representative from the shelter takes animals to senior citizen homes. These two programs are relatively new and will hopefully continue to grow.

The Animal Orphanage exists for one reason, to help the animals. All of the efforts of the people involved with the shelter allow us to be as successful as we are. Without their dedication and hard work, we would not be able to accomplish the one thing that we set out to do, help homeless animals find new loving homes. Hopefully, with new programs and new ideas The Animal Orphanage will continue to grow.
