REESE - Updates |

|
6/16/09 - is currently getting her medical needs attended to, but will be moving to a foster home in the next few days. In her foster home she will have the comforts that are not available at our shelter, as well as personal interaction that she needs. Her wounds will need about a month to heal to a point where she will be ready to think about finding a new home. She's feeling a little better today and is acknowledging the staff entering her kennel, yesterday she didn't even raise her head when we went in. We'll be updating this page every couple of days, and will post new pictures of her as we go along so that you can all see how well she's doing. Thank you to everyone who has called with concern for her. You can make a donation to our CARE fund, which assists in covering the cost of medical care and life enrichment tools for the animals our shelter is responsible for.Reese has been re-examined by the veterinarian this morning. The vet has determined that the dog will need surgery to close some of the wounds and further address some of the road burn wounds. Surgery will be performed this afternoon. SPCA investigators are seeking out Omar Davis of 85 Elmer Road, Vineland and Kenneth Robinson, address unknown, also of Vineland; as persons of interest. The dog was given to Mr. Davis approximately 2 weeks ago by the previous owner. Mr. Robinson was also named by persons questioned about the incident, as having possibly had the dog in his possession as well. The two men are being asked to come forward with any information they may have about the whereabouts of the dog prior to the incident.
Update 6/16/09 a.m. Reese has been re-examined by the veterinarian this morning.
Update 6/16/09 3:30 Reese is recovering from surgery to close two of her worst wounds and debride her burns. The veterinarian has determined that she will require intensive burn care with daily debriding on a daily basis. We are hoping that some of the larger veterinary centers in the area will offer their services to help her through her recovery. SPCA investigators spoke with Omar Davis this afternoon. Mr. Davis stated that he did have the dog in his possession the day of the incident but that the dog was taken from his yard Saturday night. Investigators have been fielding multiple calls and visits with people providing information and tips. We continue to ask the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. (856)691-1500
Update 6/17/09 The Cumberland County SPCA is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to an arrest in case of Reese the dog that was drug behind the pick-up truck. Persons offering information may remain anonymous. Mr. Kenneth Robinson has made contact with investigators and is cooperating. Reese is recovering from her surgery. She has been standing up and moving around a bit today but still is still receiving medication to manage her pain. The CCSPCA has received offers of help from Midwest Veterinary Supply as well as a large veterinary hospital that wishes to remain anonymous to help with the her recovery. We remain hopeful that she will recover from her injuries. The CCSPCA is pursuing several leads in the case but we encourage anyone with information about the incident to call.
Update 6/19/09 - Reese was transferred to a 24hr medical facility because her wounds are so extensive. She'll need daily wound care which will consist of the same care a burn victim would need. Her wounds will be scrubbed and ointment applied, which can be a painful undertaking as you can imagine. We'll continue to receive updates from the vet facility, and photos. We'll post them as time allows.
Update 6/26/09 - Reese is doing well at the 24hr clinic. She's taken a special liking to the vet there who is caring for her. She appreciates the attention she's getting from the office staff as well, and has begun to get her appetite back. She lovingly wags her tail and licks the faces of those giving her medications and scrubbing her wounds. Below are new photos. You can see that patches of her wounds are raw, but that is necessary. These photos allow you to see just how severe her injuries were.... the first photos we had let you see the trauma, but this shows better the large scale of the damage done as she was dragged down the pavement.
Update 7/10/09 - Today is a big day in Reese's road to recovery..... the vets feel that she is well enough to leave the urgent care facility and move into a foster home where she will continue to receive care and medical tending, but at a more scaled down pace. While we're sure she was sad to leave the new friends she's made while at the hospital, we're sure Reese can't wait to get to a home and nap on the couch. Now that she's in foster care, we will have more regular updates on her. We also will get to know her more, and so we think that Reese will be ready in a few weeks to start thinking about finding a forever home. If you or someone you know would be interested please fill out the adoption application here on the website. We won't contact you right away, as she's not ready for adoption at this point, but that will allow us to know who is interested in adopting this sweet little gal. Many thanks to go the vet clinic that took her - many clinics wouldn't have wanted to deal with a case as severe as hers. We'd also like to thank all of you who have sent in donations to assist in paying for her care. The get well cards we've received will for Reese will be sent to her foster home so that they can read them to her.
Update 8/18/09 - Reese has been back at the shelter for a few weeks now - she decided that she wasn't so fond of other dogs at her foster home and so she couldn't stay there. She's been getting her meds, and has been receiving walks and attention daily from several staff members. We don't want to overwhelm her with all of the staff working with her at once, so we've decided it's best that a few key staff members be the ones that have the most interaction with her right now. A local dog trainer came in an evaluated her (so that we have a better understanding of her personality, and can therefore look for an appropriate home for her.)
She's currently going to weekly training sessions with a staff member, and having those sessions repeated with staff each day so that she'll continue to learn the things she is taught. She's doing well, and we are accepting applications for her adoption, but this will not be a swift process. Reese's former owner did tell us a little about Reese's history, and finding the right home for this gal may take a bit more work than most. Below are the things we are looking for in a home for Reese, and we'll add items as we get to know better what she needs:
no children no animals low visitor traffic continued formal training secure fencing Adults in the home willing to make the time commitment to a dog who will need time to adjust to a new environment & work on dealing with new situations.
Update 9/2/09 -Today Reese underwent another surgery to repair the wounds that had not yet healed. She had two open wounds on her side that were unable to heal. Her surgery has left her with two large incisions, but she is recovering well. The night after her surgery she was up and giving kisses to her handlers. She is on antibiotics and pain medication and it will take approximately 6 weeks for her incision to heal. Her training will be on hold for a week or so until she is feeling better. Up to her surgery however, she had been making nice progress in her training. Obedience training is the first step to helping her become the good dog we know she can be.
You can see her new incisions in the photos, as well as her old wounds (on her face and leg) which have healed beautifully. You can also see how beautiful our girl is as she practices her "sit" command for the camera. We can tell she is enjoying life as she rolls around happily in the grass in the sunshine. (she's wearing a shirt to help protect her incisions until they've had a little time to heal.)
We are accepting adoption applications which can be submitted via our website. Once an application is approved, we will set up a meet and greet. Reese is searching for a very special home with big-hearted and dedicated people. While her ideal home would have no other animals, no children, and secure fencing- the most important ingredient to her success will be owners who are 100% committed to continuing her training. She is very affected by her past and will need a strong leader to teach her how to overcome her difficulties. With proper guidance, we believe that Reese will be a wonderful pet and will make amazing progress. The staff at the SPCA who work with her every day see the potential that is there and we are committed to helping her find just the right home! All the hard work is worth it when we see her rolling in the grass with joy or giving us kisses. Please contact the SPCA at CCSPCA_Foster@yahoo.com if you have questions about Reese's placement. Thank you for your support!
