Poor Emma had a rough start in life- homeless, hungry, and slated to be put to death. But then her luck suddenly changed. Emma was taken in by 11th Hour Rescue. There she found Joanna, who fell in love with her and brought her home. She never knew life could be so great.

Just as suddenly, on July 21st, tragedy struck. She was stricken with uncontrollable seizures and was rushed to emergency. They couldn't stop her seizures as they grew in intensity and frequency. All her tests were coming back negative. Some of the medication they prescribed was helping, but she was still suffering painful seizures from time to time. The doctors were baffled. They had never seen anything quite like this. Joanna was frantic to get help for Emma.

Finally she got an answer: Emma was suffering from a rare parasitic illness called Neospora Canium. She fought the fight of her life, but eventually the pain and suffering from the disease was just too much. Emma lost her battle on September 2, 2008. For all of us who had been touched by Emma, it was a sorrowful day.

Her vet bill is over $12,000 and still being tallied. Emma fought for her life, and now her "mom" is fighting to pay the bills for Emma's care. Please help and donate in the memory of a loved one.

Thank you ALL for the notes of support and kind words.

Emma is at emergency again.  The vet said she will recover but unfortunately the bill is now over $12,000 and her mom Joanna can not afford it. Joanna has been crying for days and notified the vet today that she can not continue much longer.

If Emma is not released by Friday she has made the heart wrenching decision to put her to sleep.  Emma is a wonderful girl who enjoys every moment...please help us give her more joyful moments with the family she loves.  If you can contribute anything, even a dollar, it will help. We do not have much time but I am begging you to please help and pass this on to anyone and everyone.  I love this dog and my heart is breaking for her mom, Joanna.  If she is put to sleep I don't think I will ever get over it so I have to try to help.  Looking for some help. . . and a miracle.

Emma has been home now for almost three weeks. When she was initially brought home, her limitations and abilities were uncertain.  Her first few days at home were spent under the watchful eye of Joanna, who followed her around everywhere she went.  Her back legs were very unstable and she had a tendency to knock her head into furniture.  This was expected after spending two weeks in and out of sedation at the hospital where she lost a significant amount of weight.  Within two days she had remembered that going to the bathroom inside was a bad thing, barking always got her some attention, and treats were awarded to her for listening to commands.  Her first checkup with the doctor showed that she had gained back all the eight pounds she had lost, that her medical dosage levels were stable, and that she would need to take her prescriptions for another 4-6 months.  As the cooler weather starts to set in, there is a noticeable increase in her activity level.  No piece of wooden furniture is safe from her chewing frenzy and all shoes are the enemy that need to be destroyed.  It will take months of treatment to eliminate the parasite from her system and the amount of time she will need to take anticonvulsants is uncertain, it may be a permanent thing in her life, but she is on her way to recovery.

Poor Emma had a rough start in life but she thought her luck had changed when she was finally rescued.  And then, just when she thought life couldn't get any better, she found someone who fell in love with her and brought her home.

She never knew life could be so great. . .she had a roof over her head, toys, her own bed, good food and most importantly someone she loved who loved her back.  She became a happy soul.  She loved going for walks and car rides and most of all she loved spending time with her people.  It made you smile to just look at her because you could see how happy she was.

Then on July 21st  tragedy stuck.  She had uncontrollable seizures.  She was rushed to emergency by her frightened owner.  The emergency group admitted her right away and started running tests.  They couldn't stop her seizures and they were growing in intensity and frequency.  They finally put her in a medically induced coma, a deep sleep, till they could get them under control and figure out what was causing them.  All her tests were coming back negative and while some of the medication they put her on was helping she was still seizing from time to time.  The doctors were baffled.  They had never seen anything quite like this and in the mean time Emma's owner was frantic that she was going to lose her girl.  How could this happen when Emma had in the past few months just really started to live?  Finally some good news. . .they thought Emma could go home and her new human was so happy. . .her baby was coming home and then the heartbreaking phone call.  Emma
had 3 more seizures over night and she couldn't be released.  The hospital still wasn't sure what was causing them.   Emma's mom was more scared than she had ever been in her life. . ..was she going to lose her baby?

Finally she got an answer as to what Emma is battling.  It is a rare parasitic illness called Neospora Canium.  Poor Emma is in a fight for her life.  She cannot be moved and must stay at the emergency clinic until they get her seizures under control and we are hopeful with the change in protocol and her will to live that she will beat this illness.   Her vet bill is over $10,000 as of now and climbing but Emma is fighting and her "mom" is fighting to pay these bills to give Emma every chance and to hopefully get her baby home.   She goes to visit her at the clinic and tells her to fight, to get well, and most importantly. . .that she loves her.  Emma is currently at Animal Emergency and Referral in Fairfield, NJ. and we are praying that she will win her battle and get to come home.  We are begging for help for Emma.  If you can donate anything at all for her it would be greatly appreciated - every dollar counts and may just mean the difference between life and death for Emma.  If you are not in a position to donate please send Emma your good wishes and prayers.
