A SPECIAL VISIT TO THE BIRTHPLACE OF JESUS

Everyone knows that several animals were present during the birth of Jesus Christ. However, like the people present, their lives were changed forever, and perhaps by that grace they can all teach a lesson.

The manger scene is a very peaceful one but it is also not what you expect from what is sold in stores. It was a cold night and it is dark with very few people gathered. The wise man came later, they were not present that evening. Nobody really knew what was happening that night. In addition, not many people would consider what the Holy Spirit would inspire in the faithful animals surrounding the Christ child.

The camel knew his job was to carry a burden. He may have complained along the way, but he did not likely complain as much as we might when we are asked to carry a burden. As the camel gazed on the Christ child, he likely was moved by his efforts and recognized the value he helped bring to the world. We too should have the mind of the camel when we are asked to carry a burden. We should see the value in the service we do for others and try to complain less on the journey.

The sheep present recognized the one they were to follow. As the sheep looked down at the beautiful child born on Christmas night they were probably thankful for the ability and wisdom to follow someone. How about us? Do we have the wisdom and humility of the sheep present that night to follow someone when we are called to do so?

The birds that were present in the rafters gave themselves a broad view of the miracle of this birth. Often times we neglect the ability to have a broader view of events in our life. The birds that night instruct as of the value of opening our minds and hearts when the opportunity presents itself. They do this by placing themselves above and beyond the scene. Sometimes we find ourselves “too close’ to a situation and need to take a lesson from the birds to go beyond ourselves and our own needs to see things more clearly.

The donkey is often considered to be not a very bright animal. They are also accused of being stubborn. In fact this is not true. Jesus chose the donkey not only to be present at the scene of His birth, but also to ride into Jerusalem for His Passion. The donkey is a very loyal animal and is not stubborn but very determined. How determined are we when faced with adversity? The donkey gives us tremendous insight into how we need to approach a challenge.

Jesus Christ was born more than 2000 years ago, but His lessons live on. On the night of His birth He surrounded Himself with those He loved. The animals were present because of His love for them and all of us. God lives within us as Creator every day of our lives. He is born into our hearts every day that He gives us another chance to serve Him in this life. Maybe we should consider some of the thoughts of these creatures of God as we approach this Christmas and New Year.

Blessings,
Deacon Joe
