How do I adopt?
The adoption procedure at the Ewing Township Animal Shelter is fairly simple. Animals are held for seven days before they are available for adoption. This allows for owners to reclaim animals that may have been lost. Animals that are surrendered by their owners are available for immediate adoptions. There is an adoption fee for all animals adopted that helps to cover the cost of care during the time the animal is with our shelter.

How can I reclaim my pet?
If your pet has come into our shelter, you may reclaim your pet by providing proof that it is your pet. (Vet records, rabies vaccination, etc). Fees for reclaiming an animal are as follows:
$11 for the first day your pet is with us,
$7 per day for every day or part of a day after that
For example, if your pet is with us for three days, your reclaim fee is: $11 for day 1, $7 for day 2, $7 for day three totaling $25.

What are some things I should think about before I commit to adopting an animal?

Deciding on a pet- Before deciding on a pet, you must consider the following points:

  • Are you and your family willing to make a 10 - 15 year commitment to this sentient being in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer, for as long as all shall live?

  • Do you want a puppy or an older dog that is already housebroken? If you are trying to make that decision consider the following- a puppy is still a baby. It will need to be housetrained and this will be a longer process with a puppy than a dog that is a year or older. Also, puppies are not prepared to be left alone for long periods of time. They may whine or cry when left alone at night or during the day. If adopting a dog that is a year or older, remember a dog in the range of 1 to 4 years old will still have a whole lot of puppy in them. They will still love to play and will have tons of energy to keep up with you. Most dogs in this range just need a gentle reminder for house training. Also, they tend to have more manners than puppies and are just as cute! Every dog was once a puppy. If you are looking for a dog to be a companion, someone who has outgrown most of their puppy energy, then a dog over the age of 5 will be a good fit. If you are looking at cats, kittens love to play and tend to want to run around, play and cause havoc wherever they can. They are not typically lap cats that are content just to lay in your lap. A cat that is a little older will have learned some manners and will enjoy quality lap time.

  • If you rent, you need to make sure that your landlord allows pets and does not restrict the type of pet that you have.

  • When adopting a pet, you are adding to your family just as if you had a new child. This new family member will need its own food, bed, toys, love, play time and doctor to maintain a happy, healthy life. Be prepared to provide these necessities to your new pet. The following estimate of annual cost of a new pet was provided by the American Society for the Prevent of Cruelty to Animals. (www.aspca.org)
