| DVBR is asked to take
in puppy mill dogs on a regular basis. We recently took three into
foster care & they are waiting for homes now. Please read about
the dogs below and complete an application
if you are interested in adopting one or more. Also,
PLEASE consider donating to the costs of their care while we
prepare them to be adopted into loving homes.
Pixie, Shelby and Bobby are all puppy mill escapees! They were
recently freed from their perpetual prison when the rescue picked
them up & brought them to DVBR foster homes. Here’s a
little more about each of these three precious little pups . . .
Pixie |

Pixie is a 6 yr. old female who, until recently, spent her entire
life in a cage in an Amish farm, so she is just now learning how
to be a 'regular dog' in her foster home. She is having fun with
the other bichons that already live in the home, and she's getting
the lay of the land...learning how to use the doggy door and learning
that human attention is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing.
Shelby |
 |
Shelby is another puppy mill escapee who is quite shy, as is typical
of a dog who has spent her entire life in a Lancaster puppy mill.
She's coming around though, and beginning to enjoy human attention
now that she realizes it leads to GOOD things. Shelby is enjoying
the company of the other bichons that already live in her foster
home. We would guess that she weighs about 12 lbs. She's a very
small girl.
Bobby is a 6 y/o male puppy mill escapee. Unlike his female counterparts,
Bobby is far more socialized than the others. It’s POSSIBLE
that he was the ‘decoy dog’ who was brought out to show
prospective buyers. If that’s true, then it made a remarkable
difference in his personality. Bobby acts much more like a typical
‘pet bichon’. He craves human affection and wants to
be wherever you are, which is much more typical behavior for this
breed.

All three of the above dogs have been spayed/neutered, updated
on shots, and all three have had dentals so they are all set to
go once we find them a good home. None of the three is 100% housetrained,
although they are certainly making daily progress in their foster
homes. Since puppy mill bichons have never lived in a typical home,
they have never had the opportunity to LEARN housetraining skills
as you would expect. Therefore, their foster homes have been working
on housetraining, and their new families will need to continue to
do so. Patience and consistence is key with a puppy mill dog. They
need all the tender loving care you can give them, and they need
your understanding as they learn to be ‘normal dogs’.
Puppy mill dogs typically spend every waking moment of their lives
confined in tiny cages. Therefore, once they join us at DVBR we
believe strongly that they should never step foot in a crate again.
Besides, their aversion to sitting in their own waste has been ‘trained’
out of them at the hands of puppy millers who never bother to clean
out the cages. So their new families will need to be willing to
utilize other methods of housetraining besides CRATE training. We
will be happy to discuss this in greater detail with interested
families.
Pixie, Shelby and Bobby all NEED and DESERVE loving homes. They
should be able to see how wonderful life CAN be for a dog when they
are in the right home. Won’t you give one of these three loving
dogs a special home to call their own??? If you are interested in
one of these three dogs, please click on our “adoptable pets”
page, then click on their names or photos to read more information
about them.
The ideal home for a puppy mill dog usually includes a fenced yard
and a second ‘normal dog’ who can befriend the new dog
and “show them the ropes” of being a regular dog. Ideally,
a family that does not work full-time would be best, because again…these
dogs have spent their entire lives in virtual isolation and we want
them to know what a truly perfect home is like! A puppy mill dog
is typically not a dog that would make a good first-time pet. Dog-experienced
owners are best. Of course there are exceptions to very rule, but
generally this is most ideal.
Please visit their listings & read more about them if you are
interested in any of these wonderful dogs!
