A Little Love Called "Hope"
HOPE UPDATE September 2006: August has come and our Hope is strong enough for surgery to remove her infected eyes. Although it sounds terrible, Dr McVeigh assures us that Hope will be healthier and happier after the procedure.
The day of the surgery we were all on edge, but she came through it fine, just as she has all her other obstacles. Recuperation time was very short - she was out and about the next day!
It is now a month after surgery and Hope is venturing downstairs and napping in the sunroom. She has her favorite toys as well as her favorite cat friends and no problem seems insurmountable to her! Hope's courage is an inspiration to all of us!
HOPE'S STORY: A petite young calico plays with a squeek toy - she stalks, pounces and hits with precise movement - throws it in the air and catches it before it hits the ground. Of course, typical "cat activity" the only difference being that our little calico, "Hope" is totally blind!
Cumberland County Shelter left us a message about her - sweet little calico under a year, totally blind, but needs around the clock attention. Can we help?
Without hestitation, Toni drives to the shelter where the employees lovingly hand her over to us. She spends her initial few days camped-out in our bathroom. She loves attention but is very nervous if an adult cat runs in. We notice right away that she can play "cat-teaser".
We soon make a decision to move her into our kitten room, where she'll have more stimulation but non-threatening. She immediately climbed the cat tree and made herself at home, and best of all she enjoys playing with the kittens, all 7 of them!
When she gets stronger, Hope will need surgery on her eyes since they are now prone to infection. For now she is as happy and content as any of our sighted residents.
Watch for future "Hope Updates".
Stevie "The Wonder Cat"
We recently received a call from a neighboring shelter concerning a young, tabby boy missing part of his foot and leg.
Besides being malnourished and weak, what was left of his leg was very swollen and infected. Since he arrived late on Saturday, we decided to give him some antibiotics and take him to Voohees Vet Clinic Monday AM.
We kept him warm and as comfortable as possible for the remainder of the weekend. In spite of his discomfort he was eating well and would readily roll over for "belly rubs." His big tabby eyes showed that he trusted us completely.
After a successful Monday surgery to remove what remained of his leg, Stevie settled in for what we thought would be a long recuperation, but in less than a week he was off and running and hasn't stopped since!
Stevie is a fun cat who loves to run up and down stairs, racing the other cats as if to say "Look at me! Look how fast!" He's a total "show off" and needs a person who will spend a lot of time playing with this active tabby teen.
STEVIE UPDATE September 2006: Stevie has been adopted to a man and now also has one brother cat. We wish the best to Stevie and his new family!

- Spay and Neuter your pets! More cats die from "euthanasia" because of they don't have homes, than from all reasons combined. Preventing unwanted litters is the best way you can help. Please see our links page for more information about low cost spay and neuter options for your pets!
- Spay and neuter any stray cats in your neighborhood. If you are aware or are living near a feral cat colony, there are ways you can help. One or two unaltered cats can quickly multiply into 10... 20... 30... Please see our links page for more information on TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) Programs.
