New Kitten Introduction
from 2005 Holiday Newsletter

iIntroducing a new cat into a home that already has a cat:

  1. Smuggle it in.
  2. Take kitten to veterinarian to rule out any contagious diseases that may spread to your cat.
  3. Give kitten its own room. Let your cat and kitten sniff each other under the door.
  4. Mingle their scents by reversing their bedding and toys.
  5. Trade places after a few days so the kitten has a chance to explore the house.
  6. Confine kitten in a carrier to make the face to face introduction. Let your cat smell the carrier. Expect a few hisses. Never break up a fight by hand. Have a water-filled squirt bottle or can filled with pennies on hand.
  7. Always give the older cat more attention than the kitten so he knows he's still in charge and loved.
