Questions to Ask Yourself before Adopting...
Are You Prepared To... Spend the money it takes to provide proper veterinary care including but certainly not limited to: vaccines, heartworm testing and preventative, spaying or neutering and annual check ups? Invest the considerable time, money and patience it takes to train your dog to be a good companion? (This does not happen by itself!!) Invest the considerable money it takes for food, grooming, toys, kitty litter and other supplies for the life of the pet? Become educated about the proper care of your pet, correct feeding and how to groom? (There are many good books available if you will invest the time to read a few.) Have the patience to accept (and enjoy) the trials of puppyhood, which in some dogs can last for three years? Or kittenhood- kittens do scratch furniture. Do you have the patience to train the kitten to use a scratching post? Make sure the dog gets enough attention and exercise? (Some dogs need several hours of both, every day!!) Always keep your dog safe; no running loose, riding in the back of an open pick up truck or being chained outside? Live with shedding, retrieving, drooling and high activity for the next 10-15 years. Tolerate some damage to your furniture and floors until your new pet becomes accustomed to your home? Continue to accept responsibility for the pet despite inevitable life changes such as new babies, kids going off to school, moving or returning to work? If you answered yes to ALL of the above you are ready to start looking for your perfect companion.
