Meet our founder and grateful friend, Fran Asher.

Fran Asher began raising money to build Laurinburg's Scotland County Humane Society in 1974. Today, the shelter is a beautiful building with widespread programs involving all of Scotland County. Although the JD and Fran Asher Animal Shelter is not funded by Scotland County, it is the only humane society in the county. The humane society boasts some of the best ratios of incoming animals to adopted animals in the state.

Fran Asher is a dedicated and remarkable lady who makes the time to speak to advocacy groups in Raleigh at the same time as she wakes up at odd hours at night to bottle-feed an abandoned litter of kittens.

With the help of a wonderful staff and a compassionate board, Fran Asher has made the Scotland County Humane Society a lasting testament to the hope and resourcefulness of a small community.
