2002

We are proud to report the following work accomplished in 2002 by our all volunteer staff, including veterinarians, veterinary technicians and friends who have graciously given their time in Puerto Valarta.

Here are some pictures of Dr. Merce Claret, a veterinarian from Barcelona, Spain. She spent one month volunteering in PV to help the animals. She taught the local vets a wonderful new procedure. Since it is impossible to operate on a nursing cat or dog due to their milk production - we have sometimes missed opportunities to spay these females which invariably causes them to have more litters. Merce showed the local veterinarians how to operate from the side (avoiding the mammary glands) so that all these dogs and cats can now be spayed safely. This procedure she learned in England during her vast studies abroad in Vet medicine. This alone will save countless animal lives. What a great lady!

Canadian veterinarians just completed their stay in beautiful Puerto Vallarta to help needy animals. Dr. Rainier Ko and Dr. Melanie Lysowych visited and offered their services free at veterinarian clinics in Pitillal and Ixtapa among others for two weeks. Amigos de los Animales was delighted to of had these talented and most generous doctors participating in our ongoing programs to help local animals.

In Ixtapa they performed:
35 surgeries on dogs and cats of various ages and sizes

10 exams
2 house calls on several different cats
Countless flea/tick treatments, collars, leashes, worming, exams, etc.

Dr. Rainier Ko and Dr. Melanie Lysowych were flown up to San Sebastian for a few days to help the community there which has no veterinarian. A BIG thanks to Vallarta Adventures for providing their transportation and accommodations along with a donation to help for supplies for the San Sebastian mission to help needy animals.

In San Sebastian they performed:

8 surgeries on dogs and cats of various ages and sizes

4 exams

Dr. Cesar Zamora Cardenas was the veterinarian in Ixtapa who so VERY generously invited our wonderful veterinarians to use his clinic. His clinic is loacted at the front of Plaza in Ixtapa - 16 de Septiembre y Indepencia.

Dr. Zamora's cell number is: 044-322-29-46371
Dr. Zamora also has a small clinic in Pitillal at 20 de Noviembre #273-A for consultations and non-surgical vet care.

Muchas Gracias Dr. Zamora!

Amigos de los Animales would also like to thank:

James Steed and Sean Middleswart for their generous donation of much needed veterinarian supplies.

The Pauline Family for allowing the veterinarians to use their condominium.

Maca McMorran for purchasing the much needed instruction videos on early sterilization for our local veterinarians. We have actually provided 5 different veterinarians at various times to demonstrate in person these techniques, but sadly many of our local veterinarians were unable to participate. These videos will enable many of our local veterinarians the opportunity to learn these new techniques at their leisure and will be tremendously valuable in our efforts to help the local animals.

Thanks to lovely Lonnie Glover, Dr. Cesar Zamora and Rosie Carrandi for transporting the veterinarians.

Patricia and Don Gallery and Maria O'Connor (ALL Cat lovers and saviors extraordinair!) for laundering the daily linens for the animals.

And to all the other animal lovers who have given so selflessly to help those with no voice - THANK YOU...

A couple of notes from Roie:

I am busy here in PV saving animals and working hard. Attached is a photo of 2 kittens I rescued yesterday - they are sick, but we took them to the vet this AM and are nursing them back to health - I already found a home, a friend of mine who will adopt them together.

The other photo is a dog named Jack, who was hit by a truck and has a severely fractured hip/leg - which may need amputation. I have him at the vet and have a foster home lined up for him until we can find a permanent home, which is very difficult here. Jack was covered with so many fleas & ticks that it would have made you gag! We are working hard to help these animals among others - Fondly, Roie

Here are some photos of Aroca, her pups and me (Roie). We (foster mom Donna Stevens and I) rescued this dog and her puppies from the rocks on the beach that were going to be eaten by rats! Aroca will be spayed next week and all those darling, fatty pups have good homes lined up.

Donna, who is originally from Calgary, Canada, thinks it is very likely that Aroca will be staying permanently with her. YEAH!

This rescue would not have been possible without our dear friend of the animals, Donna (our Canadian Angel).

Another great success story for Amigos de los Animales (Friends of the Animals)!
