2001

We are proud to report the following work accomplished in 2001 by our wonderful veterinarians, veterinary technicians and friends who have graciously volunteered their time in Puerto Vallarta.

Amigos de los Animales helped 37 dogs and cats in the week of Jan 29-Feb 2!

Spays and Neuters – Total 30
Spayed - Dogs 17, Cats 8
Neuters - Dogs 1, Cats 4

Other Surgeries – Total 2
Eye surgery on 1 dog
Bladder on 1 cat

Consultations - Total 5

Of course this says nothing for the countless litters of puppies & kittens that were prevented by the above spays and neuters.

About a half dozen local vets participated in the seminar about early sterilization at the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) and about the same number came to observe various surgeries.

We are extremely fortunate to have had the dedicated and talented individuals volunteer this past week to help so many needy animals in Puerto Vallarta.

A GIANT THANK YOU to:

Joanne Bryla, DVM - North Carolina, U.S.
Jose Ramirez, MVZ - Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico
Sophia Ramirez, Veterinarian Assistant - Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico
Meg Blissell, Veterinarian Technician - Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S.

Dr. Ramirez and Sophia were very recently married and their trip to Puerto Vallarta was actually their honeymoon. What a couple! How many newlyweds would spend their honeymoon helping poor animals? Once again, this proves that the Mexican people are a very generous and caring people who often sacrifice for their beloved Mexico.

A special thank you to Marcia Boles for donating the use of her condo at Los Tules and to Brasil Restaurant and Sand Bar Restaurant for their generosity to our visiting veterinarians.

We hope that we will have many more vets participating in this program and we hope that all of the people of Puerto Vallarta will welcome them as they have the first group this year.

Here's some pictures of our patients, our tiny clinic and our volunteers hard at work!

Our 2nd group of visiting vets, Dr. Leslie Steele from Nova Scotia, Canada and Dr. Erin Grant from New Brunswick, Canada, offered free spays/neuters to the needy animals of Vallarta on Feb 15, 2001 at Plaza Marina.

We would like to thank Dr. Tlacaelel our esteemed and most gracious host.

A special thank you to Dr. Steele's husband, John McDonell, and Dr. Grant's husband, Steve Boyd, for sharing their wives and their vacation time to help needy animals.

Thanks to Dr. Armando Rubio (Veterinarian - Municipal Inspector) and Dr. Rosie Sanchez for taking time from their busy schedules to observe and contribute.

A special thank you once again to Sand Bar Restaurant for their generosity to our visiting vets.

Unfortunnately, the turn out was less than what we had hoped for and we only spayed 4 cats and spayed 1 dog plus one orthopedic consult.

In spite of the lack of participation, much knowledge was exchanged and friendships forged.

We are all hoping to be able to do much more to help the animals of Vallarta in the future...
