Kootenai Pets for Life monthly meeting minutes: November 8th, 2010.

Meeting held in the conference room at the Flathead Valley Community College.

The meeting began at 6:00 pm with a reading of the minutes from the October meeting. Minutes were approved as read.

Financials were given by Connie Holthaus. The bills to be paid totaled $2,657.27 operating costs and $25.00 vet bills. Judy Hyslop made a motion to pay the bills; Carol McAllister 2nd the motion. Motion passed and the bills will be paid.

KPFL made $7,249.47 on the Bow Wow Bash!!!!

Judy Hyslop introduced Holly McKenzie who has been working at the shelter. Holly is paid through Experience Works. She works 20 hours a week as our office manager. We hope to work with other agencies to get more workers who are able help at the shelter.

Chris Augustine made new leashes that work with the Overfield training. Sadly Chris will be leaving, in December, to work with sled dogs.

Patty Gifford gave an update on the finishing of the trim (coving) at the shelter.

We are looking into cleaning and resealing floors and washing the walls. Randy Amos has been doing some cleaning at the Shelter.

KPFL will have the dog bath area enclosed so there will be no escapees.

Pellets are being delivered to the shelter from ACE. Easier to use as they are under the eave and can be used as needed. We are also receiving a 10% discount, from ACE, by buying in bulk.

KPFL will take over recycling from the Kiwanis for the time being and KPFL will receive monies from the county recycling project.

The banks brought in $68.13 from Libby; $56.00 from the Caboose Pet Fees and $10.96 from Troy. This money is used in the Spay/Neuter program.

We are looking for a new place to get the tiles completed; possibly at Achievements.

KPFL will raffle a quilt, made by Jeannie Winstrom, at the rummage sale held Saturday, February 26th, 2011, at the Ponderosa room from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

The Contract with the City of Troy was signed on October 25th, 2010 by Eileen Carney KPFL president and Don Banning the Mayor of Troy. We will need to create an invoice for payment.

Troy is still working on the Animal Control officer position.

We accepted the first animal from Troy; Max (a dog).

Chipping is still an option we are looking into; possibly with Dr. Disney.

We discussed ordering KPFL T-shirts; creating a calendar and other ideas for fund raising.

Shelter report for October showed that we had 31 adoptions - 11 dogs and 20 cats. Our total adoptions for 2010 through October 31 were 95 dogs and 156 cats. In October we took in 8 dogs and 23 cats. We had 11 dogs in the Shelter and 6 dogs in foster care. We had 52 cats in the Shelter and 9 cats in foster.

Since there will be no December meeting the November Shelter Report is that we had 17 adotions for November. We adopted out 4 dogs and 13 cats. We took in 10 dogs and 17 cats. The total number of animals in KPFL care at the end of November were 24 dogs in the system and 64 cats. Since the end of October 2005 we have adopted out 1791 animals. Our cumulative total of spay or neuters facilitated by KPFL if 3588. Our 2010 total through October was 514 facilitated spay or neuters.

Eileen will get the information out on the Elections that will be held in March.

Minutes from 2009

General Meeting - January 11, 2010

Judy Hyslop gave a report on bills due. Judy made a motion to pay bill, Linda Lampton seconded. It passed and bills will be paid.

Judy gave the Shelter Report. In December we had 12 adoptions and took in 27 animals. As of the end of December 2009 we had 12 dogs in the Shelter and 8 in foster care. We had 66 cats in the Shelter and 17 cats in foster. In 2009 we took in 99 animals and adopted out 201. As of the end of 2009 we have adopted out 1479 animals. We have been having a problem with the cats and due to FIP 5 cats have died at the Shelter.

We are using our PetSmart Spay and Neuter grant to help defray the cost of spaying and neutering. In 2009 as of the ned of November we have a total of 359. December 23 41 cats were taken to the Flathead Spay Neuter Tast Force in Kalispell. Carol McAllister will take another 12 in January.

 

Volunteers are need at the Shelter. People are needed on the weekends and especially dog workers. If you or anyone you know can volunteer some time please let Tami White know.

New Business: Lynn Hagarty asked how many animals can we take from Lincoln County Animal Control. Discussion followed. Lynn Hagarty, Claire Evans and Judy Hyslop volunteered to work on this and will report at the next meeting what was decided.

Hours for Lincoln County Animal Control are 12 to 4, Monday through Friday. KPFL Shelter hours are 9:30 to noon, Montana through Friday.

Eileen Carney will check with the Lincoln County Credit Union to see if we can meet in their community room.

An insurance policy for the Shelter has been activated through Kevin Peck of Glacier Insurance.

Meeting held at the new Lincoln County Credit Union conference room.

Meeting began at 6:00 pm with reading of the minutes from the January meeting by Connie Holthaus; minutes were approved as read.

Financials were read by Connie Holthaus. Bills to be paid were $3,885.21. Tami White made a motion to pay the bills. Vicki Silcox seconded the motion. Motion was passed.

Kathi Hooper from the County notified KPFL that our contract was on hold due to 3 complaints about the condition of the cats at the shelter. The February $1900.00 contract monies will be paid. Money for the ventilation system is available. There are 68 cats and 32 dogs that have come thru animal control. If we get the air exchange system installed then the county will discuss resuming the contract. Quarantine policy is in place.

Corinne Wright ­ Saturday Feb. 6th ­ was cat day at the shelter. Verified every cat, name tags, eyes checked etc. Seventeen cats had to be put down at the shelter at the recommendation of Disney, DVM. Dr. Disney was the vet of record. There was a problem with FIP and feline leukemia. Kathi said the dogs look good at the shelter.

Are there any grants out there to off set the ventilation system?

Eileen read the letter from Kathi Hooper; contract on hold with the county.

Judy Hyslop - shelter reports ­ wait until all animals have been evaluated.

Check all the dogs ­ spay/neuter, vacs etc. Every animal folder was updated.

There will be a run to Kalispell Flathead Spay Neuter Task Force

Beth Murray gave a handout for animals medical needs.

There were over 16,000 hours of reported hours of volunteerism according to statistics recorded by Marge Sullivan. This info could be a tool for grants.

Judy Hyslop wants to take the plastic down from the cat play area.

Cindy Harvey donated two handmade quilts. Will use at the Bow Wow Bash.

Financials were read by Connie Holthaus. The bills to be paid were $ 4,755.00. Tami White made a motion to pay the bills. Carol McAllister 2nd the motion and bills will be paid.

Judy Hyslop - discussed the air exchange system. The system is working well. $3,075.00 last half paid. $200.00 paid to Formula Fabrication for 2 vents. There is a possibility of mold inside the ceiling.

A letter from Clarence Johnson of The Libby Video Club was distributed. The letter is for donations to keep the translator operating. Connie Holthaus took some of the letter for the break room at the Forest Service.

Shelter report - Terri Turman is working on the Shelter computer entering every animal with all their details.

A shelter worker meeting to be held after tonights meeting.

At the end of January there were 28 dogs in the system and 72 cats. Fifty six at the shelter. There were 390 spay/neuters documented in 2009. February showed intake of 34, adoptions 51. A total of 24 dogs ­ 13 in the shelter and 11 in foster care. A total of 42 cats ­ 33 in the shelter and 9 in foster care. Bev Jacobs will contact the foster and adoptive families to see how things are going,

Work with the community to get more volunteers from local programs.

Spay/neuter update ­ Dr. White coming March 11, 12 & 13th and 4 days in April. Dr. Disney is also coming at some point.

KPFL made $2100.00 at the Spring rummage sale. Winners of the raffle were quilt - Lana Stewart, 2 meals - Lynn Hagarty and $50 - Lori Damon (the mirror listed on the tickets broke)

Duck Race ­Carol will get with Youth Soccer to help sell tickets. Charlie Webster is the contact. The duck race will be scheduled for June.

Rotary paid for all the cabinets in the shelter. There is about $145.00 left to use for privacy slats in the dog play area.

Letter from Kathi Hooper re: contract with the county. Air exchange system installed, approved cleaning and quarantine policies.

Bev Jacobs made a motion to sign the contract with the county. Tami White 2nd the motion. A vote was taken with 12 for and 1 opposed. Contract signing was approved.

Judy Hyslop - discussed the air exchange system as creating good ventilation. There is no mold in the attic.

Shelter report - as of March 31st; 9 adoptions, 6 intakes; 20 dogs in the system. There were 60 adoptions. In January there were 56 Spay neuters and in February there were 55 s/n.

We are back on contract with the county. KPFL took in 13 cats and 2 dogs. There are 49 cats in the shelter. We have our new rabies tags.

Dr. Disney March 30th worked at Animal Control and updated shots etc. Dr. White also checked animals. All animals at the shelter are ready to go.

Terri Turman added a $2.00 charge to Dr. White¹s bill to cover supplies. 20% comes back to KPFL. Clinics, s/n days are working out great. We have sent some animals to Eureka. We will go to Petco this month.

May 2-8th is Be Kind to Animals week. Try to make it a community event.

Pellets are being used for litter at the shelter. Had been wet and came from Rosauers. No dust.

Privacy fence for the dog yard is at the shelter.

Duck Race ­ Mark Petersen is the contact for Youth Soccer League. Grand prize $500.00 and $250.00 for golden goose. The diive for the ducks June 12th at the Venture Inn.

Barb Booher and Ted Saurman gave a presentation on trapping. Want to gather 25,000 signatures for a ballot to control unregulated trapping.

Shelter report - as of April 30th 6 dogs at the shelter and 7 dogs in foster care. Thirteen total in the system. There 42 cats in the shelter and 6 cats in foster care . Forty eight cats in the system. There were 24 adoptions and 25 intakes. The year to date activity is 65 intakes and 84 adoptions.

Seventy animals could be spay or neutered with the remaining $3,000.00 from Pet Smart monies.

We have Be Kind to Animals week coming up.

Barb Hoeltzel has made quilts for the adopted cats.

Judy would like to close out the files of the animals that have been in foster care for too long?

We have collected $61.11 from the Banks in Libby for April. Troy bank collection was $9.65. for April.

Shelter report - In the month of may we took in 13 cats and 8 dogs and adopted out 13 cats and 11 dogs. As of the end of the month we had 12 dogs in the system with 4 of those being is foster care. We had 40 cats in the Shelter and 8 cats in foster. Our cummulative total of animals adopted is 1617. Since KPFL was organized in 2001 we have facilitated the spay or neuter of 3,588 pets. Judy will ask for $5,000.00 for spay/neuter from the County. For our information fostering is for animals that are not spayed or neutered.

The volunteers at the shelter are very importantas well as those that volunteer outside of the Shelter. Barb Booher helps Judy with the stats and shelter info. Terri Turman compiles spay/neuter stats on the computer and Bev Jacobs has been keeping the medical records up to date. There are always jobs to be done and there is always a need for more volunteers.

Troy folks still want cans picked up. Eileen goes to Troy and outlying areas for the banks; maybe she can get the cans.

Carol McAllister will not be able to get the bank $$ collected. Connie will do this for June.

Vickie Silcox is looking into getting a quilt for a raffle.We will have a rummage sale at the Shelter for our 1 year anniversary on August 28th.

Barb Hoeltzel is making dog quilts now, too!

The Duck Race held June 12th at 2:00 pm at the Venture Inn was won by Abbe Heemeier 1st place $500.00 and Joe Cielak golden goose $250.00. A discussion was held with the idea of selling the duck franchise to another organization. Carol McAllister made a motion to look into the Kiwanis, Search and Rescue and the Chamber of Commerce who we bought the ducks from originally.

We are looking into a new meeting area come September; possibly at the college.

Sandy Moe with Mental Health will bring a client to the shelter to volunteer. Sandy will supervise the individual.

Cassandra Payne wanted to do A Dog Bath at the shelter. We would have to fence off the area so animals can¹t get out. We would check with our insurance, only take donations for the baths, do it in the evening, possibly only in the summer and participants must bring own bathing supplies and towels. We will discuss more about this next month.

Carrie Nowlen from the American Cancer Society proposed a fund raiser called ³Bark for Life². A one day fund raiser like the Wings Walk. We told Carrie if we had more volunteers we might consider it. She told KPFL that she would get back to us with another idea.

Kootenai Pets for Life monthly meeting minutes: July 12, 2010.

Meeting held in the conference room at the new Lincoln County Credit Union.

Meeting began at 7:00 pm with reading of the minutes from the June meeting by Connie Holthaus; minutes were approved as read.

Carrie Nowlen with American Cancer Society gave KPFL more information on the ³Bark for Life² walk a thon. She discussed having the event on August 28th when we have our rummage sale and 1 year anniversary at the shelter. We would possibly charge a $15.00 registration fee for the walkers. KPFL would have the donation jug and our other information and sale items. We might decide to use J Neils Park for the walk a thon. Possibly sell hot dogs or something for the public.

Linda Newstrom made a motion to hold the walk a thon and Judy Hyslop 2nd and the motion was carried.

Carrie discussed the percentage of the event and 60% Cancer Society & 40% KPFL.

Financials were read by Connie Holthaus. The bills to be paid were $2,988.36. Beth Murray made a motion to pay the bills. Linda Newstrom 2nd the motion and bills will be paid.

Shelter report - In June we adopted out 7 dogs and 10 cats. We took in 10 cats and 12 dogs. As of the end of June there were 18 dogs in the KPFL system. 9 dogs are in the Shelter and 9 in foster. There were 40 cats in the Shelter and 7 cats in foster. For 2010 through Juine we have taken in 108 animals and adopted out 125. Our cummulative total of adoptions since our beginning is 1,634. Our cummulative total of spay/neuters facilitated by KPFL from 2002 through 2009 totaled 3,588. 275 pets have been spayed or neutered from January through May of 2010.

Volunteers! Volunteers! Volunteers! There is always a need for more volunteers.

Kathy Hooper approved the use of county monies for spay and neuter. Possibly increase to $3800.00 ask county commissioners.

The contract with the county was reissued at $1,900.00 monthly.

Sandy Moe with the Mental Health Center requested a key to the shelter for use when the client (possibly two); are there to help clean.

Recycling in Troy; the county is going to set up dumpsters and recycling bins somewhere central in town.

Concerning the Duck Race event Trent Oleberg with Libby Main Street may be interested in buying the ducks from KPFL.

Linda Newstrom and Connie Holthaus will be in Troy for the Bluegrass Festival Friday 5:00 pm ­ 10:00 pm and Saturday 12:00 pm ­ 10:00 pm or until all the water is sold. We are the only water vendors.

Linda Newstrom with EPA offered two air conditioners and possibly an X-ray machine from the EPA.

Cassie Payne discussed the dog baths at the shelter. We are going to put fencing in the bath area so the animals can¹t escape.

There will be a parade July 31st for the Rodeo that we may walk dogs.

Meeting held in the conference room at the new Lincoln County Credit Union.

Financials were given by Connie Holthaus. The bills to be paid totaled at $1,803.44. Tami White made a motion to pay the bills. Susan Bulyard 2nd the motion and bills will be paid.

Contact Flathead Electric for budget payments in August. I did contact Flathead Electric and we are now on the budget billing.

Shelter report - for the month of July we adopted out 10 dogs and 15 cats and took in 35 cats and 12 dogs. There were 12 dogs in the Shelter and 10 in foster care. There were 59 cats in the Shelter and 9 cats in foster. in 2010 through July we adopted out 150 animals and took in 155. The cummulative total for adoptions was 1659. For 2010, through June, we have facilitated the spay or neuter of 299 pets.

There was a hotline recommended to KPFL for the Spay/Neuter Task Force. We will get more information later.

Terri Turman has been working very diligently on the vet bills and all the other stats that need to be completed. KUDOS!!!!

The fund raising report is as follows: We received $239.80 from Kootenai Disposal. $15.88 was collected from George¹s Second Hand. Our banks made a tidy sum this past month; Libby, $193.49 and Troy, $45.19. The Blue Grass Festival in Troy water sales were $148.00 and donation jug was, $29.00.

KPFL will be at the Blues Festival August 13th & 14th, in Libby, selling our delicious cold H2o. We will also recycle.

We will celebrate one year at the new shelter with a rummage sale. Set up will be Friday August 27th and the sale will be Saturday ; August 28th .

There will also be a Dog Walk with the American Cancer Society from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Hot dogs and H2o will be on sale by donation.

Our next fundraiser, get ready, will be the BOW WOW BASH! On October 16th at the VFW.

We had a plumbing mishap at the shelter. The damages were $137.50.

The next meeting will be held at the Flathead Valley Community College.

Are we going to have kittens at Rosauers to adopt?

Looking into the CHIP program so lost animals can be reunited with their families.

Susan Overland has expressed a desire to have a ³Boss Dog² training clinic in Libby, September 26th, in Libby. Susan is a dog behaviorist expert. The Memorial Center field may be the site. Discuss more at the next meeting. Cost $225.00

The meeting began at 6:00 pm with a request from Chief Robert McLeod; there is a need for an animal control officer in Troy. They will go to the employment office and create a job descriptionfor a 20 hour a week position. Looking into a contract with the county and Troy. Arrangements have been made with Debbie Rogers at Debbie¹s Grooming as a temporary holding facility. The animal will be transported the next day to Libby and Kootenai Pets for Life. After 72 hours the owner will pay the county not KPFL $30.00.

Carol McAllister made a motion to have a one year contract; Vicky Silcox 2nd the motion. The motion carried. KPFL will discuss this more at the meeting in October.

Minutes from the August 9th meeting were read by Connie Holthaus. A motion was made by Linda Newstrom and 2nd by Lynn Hagarty to approve the minutes. Motion was passed.

Financials were given by Connie Holthaus. The bills to be paid totaled $1,930.17; Vicky Silcox made a motion to pay the bills. Judy Hyslop 2nd the motion. Motion passed and the bills will be paid.

A letter was read from Marcia Wigert concerning an older couple who adopted a younger german shepherd dog but may not be able to continue walking the dog. There are individuals in the neighborhood monitoring the situation.

Shelter report - for the month of August we had 35 adoptions - 14 dogs and 21 cats. We took in 36 animals - 7 dogs and 29 cats. At the end of the August we had 8 dogs in the Shelter and 8 dogs in foster care. There were 56 cats in the Shelter and 11 cats in foster. Our year to date activitiy is intake at 191 and adoptions at 185. Our total in spay and neuters facilitated by KPFL for 2010 totals 352. Our cumulative toatl since 2001 is 3,588. Our cumulative total of adoptions since the end of 2005 is 1698.

KPFL will ask Kathi Hooper of the County for $3,800.00 for the spay and neuter program.

Twenty six cats were taken to the Flathead S/N Task Force for a total of $301.00. Dr. Hutton was at the shelter and examined the cats. He was quite complimentary about their health.

We need the trash picked up more than once a week at the shelter. We will have to pay for the extra day. Judy Hyslop made a motion to pay for the extra day; Linda Newstrom 2nd the motion. The motion carried.

We are still trying to recycle cans in Troy; possibly at the old shelter site. Kevin Miller will help with this project.

George¹s Second Hand had $14.00 this past month. The Caboose pet fees for August were $162.50. The banks were $58.99 in Libby and $21.58 in Troy.

The Blue Grass Festival in Libby earned KPFL $95.00 in water and $96.00 in the donation jug.

Our rummage sale in August made over $1,300.00.

The Bark for Life cancer walk has 6 people registered.

Carrie Nowlen had a baby boy ³Hunter².

The Caboose could not donate this year for the BWB. Carol McAllister made a motion that we use $$ from the donation jug for items to be purchased at cost from the Caboose catalog. Judy Hyslop 2nd the motion. Motion carried. The Potting Shed is going out of business. Elaine always was a wonderful supporter of the Bow Wow Bash.

We are sorry to report that Claire Evans resigned from the board. KPFL reluctantly accepted her resignation.

Kootenai Pets for Life monthly meeting minutes: October 11th, 2010.

Meeting held in the conference room at the Flathead Valley Community College.

The meeting began at 6:00 pm with a reading of the minutes from the September meeting. Minutes were approved as read.

Financials were given by Connie Holthaus. The bills to be paid totaled $1,602.66 operating and $215.00+ vet bills; waiting for the clinic bill from Dr. White for October. Linda Newstrom made a motion to pay the bills; Susan Bulyard 2nd the motion. Motion passed and the bills will be paid.

A letter was sent to Dr. Higgins, formally Troy Vet Service, for agreement that we have paid off the vet room equipment that we purchased from his clinic. There should be no remaining balance. The story continues.

KPFL received a letter and a $500.00 check from the Montana Community Foundation from our grant request.

Pizza Hut sent a letter to KPFL to get together for a fundraiser. Carol McAllister wants to handle this request!

Young Guns Pizza (new owners) wants to do a fundraiser with Kootenai Pets for Life at some function.

Shelter report - During the month of September we adopted out 6 dogs and 29 cats. We took in 6 dogs and 19 cats. We have 8 dogs in the Shelter and 8 dogs in foster care. We have 49 cats in the Shelter and 13 cats in foster. In 2010 we have taken in 217 animals and adopted out 220. The cumulative total of spay and neuters facilitated by KPFL since we started is over 4,000. In 2010, through September, we have facilitated the spay or neuter of 389 pets.

We received a check from recycling for $226.00

George¹s Second Hand had $3.60 this past month.

Troy banks brought in $10.96. We are still counting Libby banks; the Caboose brought in $56.00 pet fees.

The tile program has stalled somewhat as JoDee Thorn has had eye problems. We may have to look elsewhere for the tiles to be fired.

The Bob Wow Bash will be on October 16th at the VFW. Tickets sales have picked up this past week. Carol McAllister has ordered 150 meals.

No new information on the contract with Troy and the part time animal control officer.

We are still looking into the chipping program for the dogs so they can be found if lost.

The Boss Dog training program went very well. The training cost $505.00. Kootenai Pet for Life received $500.00 from the individuals who took the training. So KPFL paid $5.00 to have Susan Overfield teach the course. Kudos to Mr. Jack Ague who donated pizza to the shelter volunteers who took the Overfield training.

New business concerns were the deep cleaning of the lobby, bathroom and office areas. We may try to get a person to clean once a month and pay them. Volunteers don¹t have time for this.

We need to keep the building in shape. Lynn Hagarty will look into finding someone to take this job on.

Chris Augustine suggested using pepper spray to stop dog fights. Mace was also suggested to stop fights. Chris wants to make leashes that are more in the fashion of what Susan Overfield uses in her training.

Queenie is doing well in her new home. Photos have been added on our webpage adoption stories.
