General Meeting - August 10, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by President Eileen Carney.
Secretary Connie Holthaus read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read.
Treasurer’s Report: Operating bills were $434.42; Building bills were $2,414.94. Tami White made a motion to pay the bills, seconded by Judy Hyslop, voted on and passed. Due to computer problems financial report will have to wait until next meeting.
Shelter Report - no stats as yet this month due to computer and people unavailable. Judy did report they have taken all the animals from Lincoln County and we need homes and foster homes for dogs. If you know anyone that can take a dog please let Judy know. Lincoln County Animal Control is reducing their hours so they have been given KPFL Shelter hours and/or numbers to call. Monday and Tuesday of next week will be spay/neuter trips and that should bring all the dogs up to date.
Judy is try to contact a veterinarian to work in the dedicated medical room in the new Shelter.
We applied for a worker through the Community Action Partnership and have been given a worker, Miranda Wall, who will start August 11. She will be able to work 35 hours a week and get paid by Community Action Partnership.
Fund Raising - We received a check for $261.07 from recycling. The total taken in from the Duck Race was $2,860 after giving $500 to Lincoln County Youth Soccer as their share.
August 11 Connie will sell 50/50 tickets at the Dog Days of Summer at the Golf Course.
Saint John’s Lutheran Hospital will hold a Friday jeans days. We will ask for funds to be used for vacs and rabies.
Eileen send in an application for the Bernice Barbour Foundation and the Communities Foundation.
We will have a booth and sell ice cream bars at Nordicfest - Sept 11, 12 & 13. People are needed to set up and run the booth. Our canopy was damaged but Kootenai Drug has loaned us one to use for Nordicfest. Connie will call people and set up schedules.
At the Blue Grass Festival in Troy we took in $100 for food sales and $19 in donations.
The Bow Wow Bash Committee has started working on plans for the Bash to be held October 10 at the VFW in Libby. Connie passed out tickets for everyone to sell. Please sell your tickets early so numbers can be known for food planning. Have your donations in by September 15.
New Shelter - The tile flooring is done and floors have been waxed. The cove base boards are yet to be installed. Stem walls need to be painted. Deena will buy paint and Marge has volunteered to start painting this week. Fence posts are to start on August 11. The posts go in and set up a few days and then fencing can proceed. Alex has been hired to put on siding and that has begun. The rock facing on the front of the building has been installed and is completed.Gravel has been delivered and needs to be spread. Shed is yet to be moved. Deena will work on acquiring needed sinks. Utility/laundry tubs will be used for 4 of the rooms, 2 rooms will have wall hung sinks and one will have the aluminum single sink with a cabinet base.
Holding a grand opening was discussed. We also talked about have a private showing for the City Council and County Commissioners.
A tentative moving date to move the animals from Troy has been set for Saturday August 22. Commissioners and City Council tour has been tentatively set for September 9 and grand opening tentatively set for September 19.
The next meeting will be September 14 at 6 p.m. at the new KPFL Shelter.

General Meeting - June 13, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 by President Eileen Carney
Connie Holthaus read the minutes. Corrections were that the photo of the Troy students presenting the check has not been in the paper. Linda Newstrom is waiting for the writeup from one of the teachers and will submit it to the paper when she receives it. The Contract with the County was sent to the Board members via e-mail for their review before being signed.
Connie gave the Treasuerer’s Report. The operating bills for June were $606.99 and the bills for new Shelter construction were $1203.52. Judy Hyslop made a motion to pay bills, seconded by Linda Newstom. Voted on and passed. C&G Electric has finished lighting that was provided through the Roundup for Safety grant. Inspection may yet be required. C&G donated labor and sent bill for supplies only. The concrete work needed for exterior from pad and cat exterior pad turned out to be more than “leftover” amounts. Granite Concrete agreed to do the work for $900 with payment of $300 each month for three months. They came out and did the work and donated labor and sent a bill for total work for $665.12. We will pay Granite full amount in one payment. CityServiceValcon gave us $1000 from their residential fillup fund raiser for KPFL where they donated five cents per gallon sold during specified time period. They raised $951 and rounded it to $1,000. At the Join Hands Day in May we received $250 from Thrivent as everything used during event was donated. We received an additional $250 from Thrivent along with them providing cookies for selling ticket event. This money will be applied to Mild Fence bill. Mild Fence will be out of town for approximately a month so our fencing will be done when they are able. CityServiceValcon picked up the propane tank from the Troy Shelter and will give us a credit of $196.20 for it. They are going to the the propane system out of the Troy Shelter and try to sell it for us.
Judy Hyslop suggested setting up a spay/neuter account for easier tracking of spay/neuter activities and expenses. Marge made a motion they contact Debbi Davidson for assistance in setting this up. Seconded by Linda Newstrom, voted on and passed.
Correspondence: We were contacted by Mark Metzger of Great Falls. He has bought and will donate an eMachine Model W5243, computer with 17 inch flatscreen, keybooard, mouse and speakers with possible printer. He will deliver to Libby in next few weeks.
Shelter Report: Judy gave the Shelter Report. During the month of June we took in 1 cat, 24 kittens, and 3 dogs. We adopted out 5 cats, 4 kittens, and 8 dogs. At the end of June we had 4 dogs and 35 cats in the Shelter. 5 cats are in foster. Our 2009 totals through the end of June are 85 intake and 74 adoptions. Our cumulative total of adoptions is 1316. Our spay/neuter total for 2009 from January through the end of May was 164. We received a $10,000 grant from Petsmart to be used only for pre-adoption spay/neuter of pets in our Shelter. The County will give us $5,000 to be used for spay/neuter where the County will pay one half and KPFL pays the other half.
Volunteers are desperately needed at the Shelter as the regular volunteer Shelter workers will be gone on vacations. If you or anyone you know can help, please call Tami White or leave a message at the Shelter.
Fund Raisers: - Recycling in Troy. Eileen has asked Ralph Stevers if he is interested in taking over.

Dog and Cat Banks - $77.20 in Libby and $20 in Troy
Duck Races - The winners in the Duck Race were Glacier Bank $1000 and Judy and Friends $500. Libby Youth Soccer was given $500 as their percentage share for tickets sold. KPFL total will be announced at next meeting.
Tile of Walls - we have 72 completed tiles. We have made over $3,000 on this project.
Community Foundation - Eileen will fill out an application applying for funds.
Pedigree Foundation - Eileen will submit an application for funds.
4th of July rummage sale in Troy - Approximately $1400. Deena Roe made a motion this was ou last 4th of July rummage sale in front of the Troy Shelter, seconded by Carol McAllister, voted on the passed.
Pizza Hut event - We received $105.40 as a percentage of sale and the dog and cat banks which we were allowed to put on the tables took in $230. Due to change of policy by Pizza Hut our numbers were down. Carol will talk to Pizza Hut and see what other options they have to offer and we’ll discuss again at next meeting.
Nordicfest - We will use our canopy. There will be a $75 fee for selling. It was decided we will sell ice cream bars which we will buy at Costco with our $50 credit card we have at Costco. Carol will schedule workers at the next meeting.
Blue Grass Event in Troy, July 17 and 18. Connie and Linda Newstrom will sell hot dogs and water.
In review of by-laws it was discovered voting members must pay dues each year. Those not paid up should bring $5 to August meeting and get caught up.
Carol will get together 3 items and we will have another raffle to raise funds. She has a cord of wood from Tom Horelick, leather purse donated by Cody Andrews and will work on getting a dinner. Drawing will be at Bash. Carol will notify Marge when items are set and she will make tickets.
Dog Bones at Pamida - We have provided information but it has never started.
Bash Committee Meeting - at Wilma Dotson’s home on August 5 at 7 p.m. Anyone interested or with new ideas is invited to attend. The Bash is scheduled for October 10.
New Shelter: The tile flooring will be done as soon as flooring people have time. We have asked them to do only cat rooms, and intakes and quarantine rooms to keep costs down at this time. Their preliminary bid was $3500. They will also use some on hand materials which will lower the cost.
Lynn Hagarty and husband Jack have started working in dog area doing necessary work prior to apply epoxy to the floor.
A letter was received from Paul Roe and Jerry Jenks saying they will stop work on July 31. They have been volunteering almost daily for 6 months to complete the Shelter and say they are “burned out and beat up and will have to turn the final carpentry work over to someone else.” Everyone agreed they have accomplished more than we could ever have expected and we appreciate everything they have done. Cards were passed around so everyone could sign one. On Thursday, July 30, Deena will bring a cake to the new Shelter at noon and everyone is invited to come to the Shelter for cake.
Deena also brought to our attention that Jerry has been commuting from Troy daily and in six months will have traveled 6,000 miles. Judy made a motion we give Jerry a $500 gas card from Town Pump. It was seconded by Anita Beasely, voted on and passed. Linda Newstrom will pick up the cards and Connie will send with a letter of our appreciation.
New Business: A question of our official address was brought up. It is 125 County Shop Road
After animals are moved in we discussed having a grand opening. A potluck seems to be the suggested event with possibly a band that will play for free. This will be further developed as time advances.
A diagram of landscaping the Shelter area from Kathy Yearout was presented. It includes moving the shed behind the Shelter. Linda Lampton will make arrangements for that.
Judy Hyslop suggested we work on new goals as our goals of a new Shelter and better communication with the County are nearing completion. Discussion suggested a high priority would be getting a veterinarian or veterinarians in to use our medical room and promote the spay/neuter of every pet. The education program should also continue and expand. We need to get a new brochure going as soon as we get into our new Shelter and continue to hand out bookmarks.

General Meeting - Monday, June 8, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by President Eileen Carney.
Connie Holthaus read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as ready.
Treasurer’s report - Connie gave the Treasurer’s report. Operating expenses for May were $362 and building costs were $1784. Judy made a motion to pay the bills, seconded by Claire, voted on and passed.
Shelter Report - In May we had 11 adoptions - 4 cats, 5 kittens and 2 dogs. In 2009, through the month of May we have taken in 57 pets and adopted out 57 pets. Our cumulative total since the beginning of KPFL is 1299 adoptions. In 2009 through the month of April the total of spay and neuters facilitated by KPFL total 115. Tami White said new volunteers at the Shelter are always welcome.
Jerry Jenks and Paul Roe have completed work in the dedicated Medical Room in the new Shelter. Equipment has been moved in. Carol McAllister has been taken animals to the Flathead Spay/Neuter Clinics as they have the best prices. We have been asking people to take their animals to the Flathead Clinics if they are able.
Fundraising - We have returned the key to the Kiwanis recycling booth. We have completed pickup for them.
Banks - In the dog/cat banks put out around Troy we collected $21.13 and in Libby $112.66
Duck Race - tickets are being sold. Carol will check with the Soccer group to see if they have stubs to turn in. The tickets must be turned in ahead of the race so that the numbers can be assigned and the ducks sorted for each race. The Duck Race will be Saturday, June 20 at 1 o’clock in the Venture Inn pool. Connie and Carol will be at Rosauers June 9 selling tickets.
Roundup for Safety sponsored by Flathead Electric - KPFL has been granted$1400 to be used for outside security lights. C&G Electric will do the work. Billing and certification of completion must be sent in to Robin Swimley who will okay payment.
City Service Valcon - They will donate 5 cents per gallon of propane delivered May 18 - June 30, 2009. Connie will contact them about selling the propane heating system currently used in the Troy Shelter.
Rummage Sale - We will have a rummage sale Saturday, July 4 from 10 to 4 in front of the Troy Shelter. Set up will be July 3 starting at 10 a.m. If you can help on the 3rd or 4th or both days please let Carol McAllister. Items to donate can be dropped off at the Troy Shelter on the 3rd.
Pizza Hut - We will have a fund raiser Monday, June 15 at Pizza Hut from 5:30-8:30. They have changed the way it will be handled and they will not take the orders and serve. We will get 20% of the sales and tips. Connie Holthaus, Carol McAllister, Linda Newstrom, and Marge Sullivan will meet and greet and do what they can. We will take the dog/cat banks and encourage donations to the banks.
NordicFest - Carol talked to person in charge of booths. The pie concession is already taken. We will try to come up with a new idea - possibly ice cream bars.
Join Hands Day held in May - KPFL received $250 for the workday and we can get another $250 for another fund raiser if 6 Thrivent people do some work on the fund raiser. It was decided Linda Lampton will ask 6 Thrivent members to make cookies and Connie and Carol will sell cookies while they are at Pamida on June 14 or Rosauers on June 13.
Pamida - for the month of June Pamida will ask each person making a purchase if they would like to donate to KPFL and sign a dogbone that will be posted on the wall. Marge will make some signs and Carol will take to Pamida.
Bluegrass Festival in Troy - June 17, 18 & 19. Connie Holthaus and Linda Newstrom will sell hot dogs, polish dogs & water on the 17th and 18th at the Park in Troy.
Troy Elementary School has give KPFL a check for $1,975.66. Teachers Miss Winslow and Miss Price and their classes worked hard to raise the money. Photos have been taken and sent to the newspapers thanking these classes.
New Shelter - Lynn Hagarty has contacted Patty at Floors International to get a big on flooring excluding the dog kennel area. Lynn and Jack will do the epoxy floor covering in the dog kennel area when everything is completed in that area.
Eileen Carney signed a contract with the County whereas KPFL will operates as an independent contractor, an animal shelter which can meet the requirements of the County’s animal control program effective July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. KPFL will receive $1,900 per month for expenses. The new Shelter will not be ready by July 1 so Judy and Eileen will work on a means of handling this contract.
Fencing - The Kiwanis has donated to KPFL the fencing that is in place at their old Moto Cross field. July will talk to Mild Fence and see how this can be used.
Future considerations - a plaque of recognition and a grand opening potluck.
Kathy Yearout has 25 volunteer hours of community service to do as part of her Master Gardening class and asked what she could do for KPFL. Nothing specific was mentioned but she is open to suggestions. Linda Lampton will get together with her.

General Meeting- May, 11th, 2009
The meeting was called to order, at 6:05 pm, by President Eileen Carney. Attending: Eileen Carney, Carol McAllister, Connie Holthaus, Tami White, Judy Hyslop, Anita Beasley, Linda Newstrom, Linda Lampton and Deena Roe.
Tami White read the minutes of the last meeting (April) as Marge Sullivan was on vacation and Connie is a slow note taker. Minutes were approved.
Treasurer – Our bills for the month totaled $1,107.53 operating costs and $3,340.84 building costs. Eileen Carney made a motion to pay the bills; Deena Roe seconded. Bill payment was voted on and passed.
Shelter Report – Judy gave the report on Shelter activities. We had 12 adoptions: 8 cats and 4 dogs. We had 6 intakes: 2 cats and 4 dogs. Animals in KPFL care at the end of the month 26. Tami White reported that shifts are being covered but volunteers are always welcomed.
Dr Higgins will be leaving. KPFL will have Spay/Neuter day here at the shelter. Monthly? Weekley?
Carol McAllister is taking a load of cats to Kalispell on May 18th for spay or neuter.
Judy Hylsop and Tami White will pick up cans at the Kiwanis drops until the end of May.
New Shelter – The tile that has been installed was donated by Floor Covering International. Eileen, Judy and Lynn will meet with Floor Covering Int’l re: surgery room on May 12th.
Family Day in the Park will be May 16th from 11:00 – 3:00. Carol will bring Caruso and Makawan and Connie will bring Bailey.
Join Hands Community Day will be at the shelter May 17th from 1:00 to 4:00. Rosauers and Libby Empire Foods will provide cakes and McDonalds will donate the orange drink to quench our thirst. We have cups, plates and forks.
We will have Jody Gillan and Brady Turk on hand to design tiles. Carol will have Duck Race tickets to sell.
New Business – $17.76 from Troy Banks. City Service Days May 18th – June 30th; KPFL gets $.05 per gallon on propane. July 17th, 18th and 19th Bluegrass Festival in Troy. Nordic Fest Pie Palace; Friday and Saturday. Carol McAllister raised the question if we have construction insurance on the new shelter; we do!
KPFL was awarded a $1,000.00 from State Farm Insurance. This was a grant that Carol and Marge Sullivan submitted. Teresa Wilson was the contact person.
Pizza Hut wants to do a “Fun”draiser again for KPFL on Monday June 15th. We will take orders, buss tables, clean etc. KPFL will be there from 5:30 – 8:30.
Old Business – We have not heard about The Meecham Grant; from American Humane. We are still expecting to hear about Roundup for Safety for outside lights.
KPFL qualifies for a Rural Development Loan. We asked for $15,000.00. Kathy Hooper is looking into the county money. The commissioners will sign a contract for income of $1,900.00 a month. Kathy will send a copy of the contract so it can be finalized. This contract is based on Eureka’s Best Friends of the Shelter.

General Meeting - Monday, April 13, 2009 - at new Shelter on City Shops Road

Secretary Connie Holthaus read the minutes from the last meeting. They were approved as read.
Treasurer’s Report - Connie gave the Treasuer’s report. Bills for the building totaled $5,080 and operating expenses were $68192. Linda Newstrom made a motion to pay the bills, Judy seconded, it was voted on and passed. Judy Hyslop made a motion that Dr. Higgins be paid $1000 on his bill. Marge Sullivan seconded, it was voted on and passed.
Shelter report - Judy Hyslop gave the report. In the monthg of March we adopted out 1 cat, 1 kitten and 4 dogs. We took in 10 cats, 5 kittens, and 2 dogs. As of the end of March we had 7 dogs and 22 cats in the system. In 2009 we have taken in 31 pets and adopted out 32. Since the end of 2005 we have adopted out 1275 animals. In 2007 we facilitated the spay or neuter of 450 pets. In 2008 the total was 479. Total for 2009 through February was 35.
Fund Raising - Pizza Hut - The March 26 Pizza night resulted in $560 in tips and $181.48 for our percentage of sale.
Recycle - bins were place at the Memorial Center for recycling.
Carol McAllister gave a report on our current recycling program with drop off stations at the Libby Senior Citizens and Homesteader’s Ranch and Feed Supply. The cost of gas used is greater than the money earned from aluminum cans. The recycling center no longer pays for paper and after putting signs out Carol is still picking up paper and some trash. Carol said she can no longer do the pickup. Marge Sullivan made a motion to remove the drop off facilities at Libby Senior Citizens and Homesteader’s Ranch and Feed and put a notice in the papers, radio station and Channel 10 stating such and encourage people to still take their cans to Kootenai Disposal. The motion was voted on and passed. May 1 is the last day for these drop offs. Eileen said people could call her for pickup.

The dog and cat banks took in $36.52 from Troy and $66.37 from Libby.
Duck Race - the Duck Race will be held on June 20 at 1 o’clock at Venture Pool. Carol is passing out tickets for volunteers to sell and will contact Libby Youth Soccer and give them tickets to sell. Proceeds are figured on percentages of tickets sold by KPFL and
Tiles - Marge reported we have received 54 tiles completed and paid for. She has several to send in.
Pizza Hut - We will do another fund raiser at Pizza Hut on June 11.
Join Hands Day - Linda Lampton reported we have been approved to receive $250 from Thrivent. A work day will be held at the New Shelter on May 17 from 1-4 in the afternoon. Linda is recruiting various groups to come in and work. The plan at this time is to do yard work and dog walking path work.
Family Day in the Park - Will be held May 16 at Fireman’s Park. Connie will check on it.
Nordicfest - We will no longer do the food shack at the horse show due to diminishing participants in the horse show. We will sell pie down at the Memorial Center food booths.
New Shelter - Riley Excavating and Concrete has poured the stem walls in the dog kennel area. We has been paid $1300. He also graded the septic tank and drain field area. He was concerned about the settling of the ground in regard to fencing. Mild Fence will be contacted about this. Eileen will contact Flathead Electric about lighting for the Shelter grounds. Jerry Jenks and Paul Roe has installed the toilet and hung three of the eleven interior doors. C& G Electric has installed most heaters, lights, switches and outlets. They were asked to stop more funds are secured to complete the electrical work. Hardware for the interior doors, castors for the rolling reception cabinet, and faucets with sprayers for the seven sinks has been secured. Tile, thinset, grout and sealer have been donated by the Roes for the mop sink area, rolling reception cabinet top, and dog washing area. Deena Roe will do tile work. A used washer and dryer have been donated and will be installed in the bathroom area. Vent pipe, vent flapper, and possibly hoses will have to be purchased. Ten doggy door flappers have been secured for the ten kennel doors.
Family Day in the Park - Connie - May 16. Connie will check.
The next meeting will be held Monday, May 11 at 6 p.m. at the New Shelter.
A walk through of the Shelter has been advertised for 6:30 and people have arrived for a tour. Marge made a motion to adjourn at 6:40 p.m.. Linda Lampton seconded it and we adjourned

General Meeting - March 9, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by President Eileen Carney.

Treasurer’s Report - Connie gave the report. Our bill for Shelter operation totaled $1,137.20. Bills for the building totaled $1002.01 Judy made a motion to pay the bills, Tami seconded. It was voted on and passed
Correspondence - We received a $50 check from Central Pride Chapter of JMG (Jobs for Montana Graduates) They are designing a tile for their donation. They have volunteered to help with our move to the new Shelter and will be notified when needed.
A group from the Middle School - the 69th Regiment with teacher Kathy Powers donated $125.30 they earned from a bake sale that they held.
Shelter Report - Judy Hyslop gave the Shelter report. In February we processed 15 animals. Four dogs were taken in and later returned to owner. One feral cat was brought in, neutered, given shots and let go. We assisted one family in finding a new home for their dog. We adopted out 6 cats and 3 dogs. At the end of February we had 5 dogs in the Shelter and 2 in foster care. We had 12 cats in the Shelter and 2 in foster care. Our cumulative total of animals adopted is 1262.
Cat day at the Shelter went very well. All cats were reviewed and Vacs and rabies are up to date. Tail docking of Cocoa went well and the tail stayed wrapped to aid healing.
The Spay/Neuter program is active. Our funding is dwindling due to recycling prices going down and the recycler no longer taking paper. We have less money to facilitate spaying and neutering, we have less people able to pay, and we have more people wanting assistance.
Fund Raising - At our February rummage sale our total intake was $3,030.49. This total also included donations made during the rummage sale and does not reflect the $300 charge for use of the room.
Raffle - The quilt donated by the Troy Quilt Guild was awarded to Robyn Newton. Robyn is a member of the Troy Quilt Guild and who worked on the quilt. Debbie Sonju won the 7x50 UV Coated Binocular donated by Caboose Fine Gifts and Jean Buhl won the 30 Piece Car Emergency Kit donated by the Caboose Fine Gifts. Monies earned will be over $1,000
Recycling - At this time there is about $72 in our account at Kootenai Disposal. The price of cans has dropped and they no longer pay for paper. Income from the dog/cat banks around Libby totaled $108.60 and from Troy $35.61.
The Pizza Hut fund raiser has been scheduled for Thursday, March 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. We receive a percentage of total sales and all tips. Carol McAllister, Connie Holthaus, Linda Newstrom and Marge Sullivan will wait on tables.
Fund Raising Chairman, Carol McAllister is checking into holding hair cutathon as a fund raising event. Carol will contact hair dressers.
New Shelter: Progress at the new Shelter was discussed. Paint colors and finishes were discussed and is was decided that all cedar siding and trim inside and out will be left natural (with oil or whatever treatment is decided). Colors were reviewed and it was decided that Ace, card B21, color B21-4 Baby Duck will be used on the interior walls and ceiling.
New Business - The election of Board Members was opened. Susan Bulyar was nominated by Judy Hyslop, seconded by Carol, voted on and put on the slate. Connie Holthaus, Lynn Hagarty and Susan Bulyar were on the slate for Board positions. Voting was held and all were elected to the Board.
Join Hands - Linda Lampton discussed the possibility of having another Join Hands Day at the Shelter site. It is Thrivent sponsored and we could receive $250 if we are accepted. There is also another $1000 grant that she said we could apply for. A tentative date of May 17 has been set. Linda will research and find out more of what is needed and who will help
Connie said the renewal of membership to the American Humane Society had been received. The annual fee is $119. Membership allows up to apply for a number of grants available only to member. Carol made a motion we renew our membership, seconded by Judy, voted on and passed. Connie will renew.

General Meeting - Monday, February 9, 2009
Attending the meeting were Anita Beasley, Carol McAllister, Judy Hyslop, Eileen Carney, Marge Sullivan, Wilma Dotson, Connie Holthaus, Claire Evans, Tami White, and Lynn Hagarty
President Eileen Carney called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. - Connie Holthaus read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read.
Treasurer - Connie said our bills totaled approximately $9,853.00, We paid $5,873.50 to C&G Electric and $3,000 to Beartooth Mechanical for electric and plumbing on the new Shelter. Operating bills were approximately $1053. In addition to those bills, our vet bill is approximately $4,688 for the past 4 months. Tami White made a motion to pay $1,000 on that bill, seconded by Wilmas Dotson. Voted on and passed.
Correspondence - no correspondence
Shelter Report - Judy Hyslop gave the Shelter report. January 2009 we had 13 adoptions - 3 cats, 2 kittens, 7 dogs, and 1 puppy. We took in 3 cats and 3 cogs. At the end of January we had 6 dogs in the Shelter and 2 in foster care. We had 14 cats in the Shelter and 4 in foster. As of the end of 2005 we have adopted out 1247 animals.
Spay and neuters facilitated by KPFL in 2008 were 479. In 2007 our total was 450.
Veterinarian Brian Higgins recommended that the tail on Cocoa, chocolate lab, be docked. The tail is damaged and bleeding with danger of infection and no hope of healing. Claire Evans made a motion to pay the $90 to dock the tail, seconded by Judy, voted on and passed.
Judy reported she is getting many calls from people needing financial help with the pets. She has been giving them enough to go to the vet for assessment. It was discussed and agreed that at this time we can no longer give assistance to people with requests. Spaying and neutering will be our priority. It is expensive to transport and continue this program. We ask for people taking advantage of this program to pay half of the fee but if they can’t pay, we will take the animal anyway.
At this time we need to get check each animal at the Shelter and get vacs caught up. On February 21 we will have cat day at the Shelter and clip nails, clean ears, and get meds up to date. Corinne Wright will come in to assist but any one that can volunteer will be appreciated.
We have two new volunteers at the Shelter - Kerry Grant and Jonathan Halstad. If you or someone you know can volunteer to work at the Shelter, please let Tami White know.
Parent Guide Magazine for pet owners is coming out with a new issue and sending 800 copies to KPFL this year. We have distributed these to schools, KPFL events and all over town.
Fund Raising - Carol McAllister and Connie Holthaus will be out on February 17 & 24 selling raffle tickets. The drawing will be held Saturday, February 28 at the rummage sale.
Recycling - Carol McAllister and Terry Holthaus have been picking up the Libby recycling. Prices are down on aluminum and they are no longer taking newspapers at Kootenai Disposal but we will continue the recycling as a community service and in hopes the prices will come up. We have used this money for our spay/neuter program and will have to take funds from somewhere else to continue the program. Tami and Judy bring cans and newspapers from Troy that have been dropped off at the Shelter. The Kiwanas have asked up to continue picking up their donated cans until the end of April.
We had $3.25 from recycling at George’s.
We took in $101.69 from the banks at various places around town.
Rummage sale - we will start setting up at 8 a.m. on Friday, February 27 Sale is open to the public from 5 to 8 on Friday and from 10 to 4. Anyone that can help will be appreciated. Talk to Carol if you can help.
Grant Requests - Eileen and Judy have been working on grant requests.
Duck Race - Carol will talk to the Youth Soccer League to see if the want to participate. June 20 has tentatively been set as the date. Due to water height and asbestos conditions at the creek we are hoping to use pool with kids diving as we did last year.
Carol will check with Pizza Hut about holding another fund raiser there.
Marge asked that hours worked outside of the Shelter be turned in to her the first part of each month.
Debi Davidson is doing taxes for KPFL and has been helping Connie and Judy with monthly bookkeeping.
Report on New Shelter Progress - Judy is contact person and has been out to Shelter talking to men. Paul Roe sent out an e-mail with progress and questions he had. Linda Hagarty will look at e-mail and respond. Steve Newstrom is checking on insulation. Alex Toran has given a bid on $2,000 for doing sheetrock, mud, and finishing. Discussed and agreed to accept his bid. Mild Fence will stock at Shelter to see what is needed. .
New Business - Election of officers will be held at the March meeting. Connie and Lynn have expiring positions on the board. Judy nominated Connie and Lynn for places on the board. It was seconded by Carol, voted on and passed. They are on the slate for election. Anyone else that knows of anyone who would like to serve on the Board, please ask them if they would be willing to serve and they can be added to the slate at the next meeting.
Marge said a new Want List was needed for the webpage. It is out of date. Lynn will make up a new want list that can be placed on the web site.

General Meeting - Monday - January 12, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by President Eileen Carney
Minutes - The minutes were read by Connie Holthaus. They were approved as read after correction of date.
Treasurer’s Report - Carol McAllister gave a report on the meeting with County Commissioners. Judy spoke and explained our needs to the Commissioners and were were given $4,000 to used in the Spay/Neuter program and $6,000 to be used toward the Surgical Room in the new Shelter. Receipts for expenditures for the Surgical Room will have to be submitted to the County for their okay and payment.
Connie reported the expenses for November and December totaled $7,433.03 Lynn Hagarty made a motion to pay the bills, seconded by Linda Newstrom. It was voted on and passed.
Correspondence: Eileen read a thank you letter from St. John’s Hospital for KPFL participation in the Festival of Trees.
Sand’s Memorial Foundation, Havre, MT, gave KPFL $5,000 for use is building the new Shelter.
Shelter Report - Tami White said there is a shortage of Shelter volunteers. There are people on vacation and fill ins needed. If you or someone you know can help at the Shelter please let Tami know. Volunteers are especially needed on week ends.
Judy Hyslop, Shelter Director, reported as of December 31, 2008 there were 7 dogs in the Shelter and 4 in foster. There were 20 cats in the Shelter and 3 in foster. In 2008 KPFL adopted out 34 cats, 38 kittens, 32 dogs, 5 puppies, 2 rabbits and 2 roosters. In 2008 we took in 76 animals and adopted out 113. Our cumulative total since the end of 2005 is 1230 pets adopted. In 2008 we facilitated the spay or neuter of 440 pets.
Funds raising - Carol, McAllister, Fund Raising Chairman, said the Kiwanas asked us to continue to pick up recycling for their organization. She also reported due to snow plowing it is difficult to get to our drop off location.
We received $27.28 from George’s Quality Clothing Consignment.
Banks - From the banks we had $153.50 from November, $148 from December and $65 so far for January. A new person is needed to check the banks once a month in Libby. Carol McAllister agreed to do it. Eileen Carney takes care of the banks in Troy.
Quilt Raffle - Carol handed out more tickets to those attending the meeting. Connie and Carol have scheduled several days at Pamida to sell raffle tickets and Linda Newstrom has scheduled a day to sell tickets in Troy.
Grant request - Eileen is working on several grant requests.
Letter to supporters - Any volunteers available will meet Thursday, January 15 at the Forest Service Supervisor’s Office at 6 p.m. to address letters to be sent out asking for donations. A letter on the tiles will be sent with this. Marge will e-mail letters to Eileen for printing.
Rummage Sale - February 27 & 28 at the Ponderosa Room Friday from 5-8 and on Saturday from 9-4.
Pizza Hut - At the December fund raiser at Pizza Hut we raised $180.80 in tips and $131.85 from percentage of sales. Pizza Hut was very supportive and said we could do it several times a year.
New Shelter - The building was inspected and everything is looking good. Not much work over holidays and with recent amounts of snow. We are waiting for Riley to come in put in septic system. Lynn will coordinate with Mild Fence when we are ready for fencing. Jerry Jenks and Terry Holthaus have agreed to do some work at the Shelter.
New Business - Elections will be held in March. The Board positions of Connie & Lynn will be up for re-election. We need to replace Tina Green who has resigned as Board Member. Members agreed to contact people they feel may be interested and have a list at the next meeting.
Linda Lampton is checking on a Join Hands program that may be available through Thrivent for possible landscaping and grounds work around the new Shelter when weather is appropriate. She will continue checking on options available.
Connie made motion to adjourn at 6:50 p.m., seconded by Carol. We adjourned. Next meeting will be Monday, February 9, at 6 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Libby.
