Next Meeting - Monday, February

Our next meeting will be Monday, February 13, 2012, at 6 p.m. at the Libby campus of the Flathead Valley Community College in Libby. Everyone is invited to come and share ideas. If you have questions or need directions please e-mail. Minutes from our last meeting can be found here.

Saturday and Sunday we are open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are busy doing their work 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday so it is best if you call before coming so that someone is available to talk with you and show you the pets available for adoption. Call for an appointment if our regular hours don't work for you.

The Shelter is too full. We have too many dogs, cats and kittens all looking for a forever home (or even a foster home). Do you have room in your home and heart for a pet?

We need volunteers at the Shelter. Some of the regulars have vacation plans and we could use some replacements so they can have a day off! Call the Shelter and tell them you can help - 293-5735 (kpfl) There are lots of things you can do - for an hour, a day, a week, you name it! Walk the dogs, play with the cats, clean kennels or litter boxes, help with the feeding, do office work - the variety is endless.

Our Spring Rummage Sale is fast approaching. If you have items to donate please bring to the Ponderosa room on Friday morning, February 24 or talk to Carol at 293-3435 to make arrangments to drop off your items. No clothing items please. If you are able to help with the rummage sale please call Carol.

The cumulative total for spay & neuters facilitated by KPFL from 2001 through July 2011 is 4409. We continually work on the spay/neuter program using facilities in Libby, Kalispell and Bonners Ferry. We encourage each and every pet owner to go to their veterinarian and have their pets up to date with all medical needs. If this is impossible we can offer some assistance.

Molly, Bella and Beau all went to one family and it sure looks like they found a great place to live!

Kootenai Pets for Life encourages everyone to take their pets to their veterinarian and have them spayed or neutered and to have their vaccinations up to date.

If you are unable to do this KPFL, with some financial assistance from the County, is still actively offering a spay/neuter program. If you need help to spay or neuter your pet call 293-kpfl (5735) or if you can help fianancially mail your check to KPFL, Box 1454, Libby, MT 59923.

The Casey Fund
a separate account solely to provide funding for animal surgeries at KPFL

Dog’s death leads to fund for surgeries

By Canda Harbaugh
The Western News

A 9-year-old great western terrier that won the hearts of Kootenai Pets For Life animal shelter volunteers died last December.

The force that local businesses and volunteers put behind trying to save the little dog’s life, however, has led to something positive – a recently-established fund in the canine’s name to help shelter animals in need of surgery.

KPFL volunteer Terri Turman still gets emotional when she speaks of Casey, the little dog that died from complications after a bone became lodged in his throat.

“He just touched everybody at the shelter,” Turman said. “He was so well-behaved and so sweet.”

Casey didn’t stay long at the shelter before he found a new family to take him home last year. But shortly after his move, his owners brought him back for a veterinary exam. The dog had been vomiting for a week.

That is when the wheels began to turn.
