Before Adopting a collie, please consider these breed characteristics:
- Rough Collies are double coated dogs, they WILL shed and need to be groomed regularly.
I brush ours twice a week and they go to be professionally groomed every 6 weeks. They are a HIGH MAINTENANCE companion.
If this is something you aren't ready to take on, you might consider a smooth collie or a mix with a lighter coat. If you don't consider dog hair a condiment, this may not be the breed for you.
- Many collies are large dogs (65-80lbs). Be aware that a larger collie will cost more to groom, vet, feed and care for.
- Collies are generally barky. They will bark when the UPS man comes, and to alert you when someone's at your door. If a barking dog will bother you or your neighbors, this may not be the right breed for you.
- Collies are loyal and intelligent. Be prepared, your collie will occasionally outsmart you.
- Collies have long pointy noses that they will use to their advantage a number of ways. If you have a collie around, you can plan to be regularly goosed, the space between your couch cushions will be REALLY really clean... and there will be snoot on your windows.
- Collies walk up to you, look straight in your eyes, then burp. We don't know why, but it always gets a laugh when they do it to our friends.
- Collies are HERDERS. They will chase kids, cars, bikes, and nip heels/bottoms. We always recommend obedience training for our collies, they thrive when learning.
- All of our dogs REQUIRE a fenced yard, unless otherwise noted.
