Who Are We?

Cause for Paws is a Minnesota nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1998. It is a small all-volunteer group of friends who love cats. Our main focus is helping stray and abandoned cats and kittens find loving, permanent homes. These are the cats and kittens one would find at many animal control facilities; discarded pets who had been doing their best to survive outside, hanging around neighborhoods and city parks. Cause for Paws assists approximately 200 cats a year and its work is entirely funded by donations.

How does Cause for Paws work?

The volunteers of Cause for Paws care for these cats in their own homes. When families adopt cats from Cause for Paws, space is opened up in the foster homes so additional cats and kittens can be taken in. By adopting one cat or kitten, families help save many other cats too!

Where do these cats come from?

Cause for Paws takes in most of its cats from animal control facilities. These cats, being strays, of course, don't even have names -- all they have is identification numbers assigned by animal control and the date and location found.

Once the Cause for Paws volunteer tucks that cat into a carrier, he or she becomes a lifelong Cause for Paws cat -- even after finding a loving, permanent home. After a cat is adopted, if the owner should ever not be able to keep the cat, Cause for Paws will always take the cat or kitten back into its care.

How long does Cause for Paws foster its cats?

Sometimes a cat or kitten doesn't find his or her home for several months or more, and sometimes the perfect family comes along right away. A cat may be moved to another volunteer's home in order to find the best environment for that cat or to learn more about him or her. A cat may need extensive medical care or more time to settle in before Cause for Paws feels comfortable in making the cat available for adoption.

The goal of every Cause for Paws adoption is a home where the cat and the other family members -- both two-legged and four-legged -- will thrive. It may take a bit of time to find just the right family for a cat and the right cat for a family. Cause for Paws tries to find the best home -- not just any home -- for every cat in its care.
