Beside spay or neutering your pet for over-population problems it is a great health benefit. Another good health benefit is your pets weight, an overweight dog or cat puts more stress on the skeleton system. Fat deposits around the heart can make it difficult for it to function properly.
Checking your pets stools can give you a good indication of some health problems, worms can be seen or continued diarrhea can lead to dehydration where a vet should be consulted.
Brushing your pet not only removes loose hair but any fleas or ticks can be found and removed, it also invigorates the skin making for a better coat.
Of course exercise is a must for a healthy dog. Some breeds need more than others, and most dogs can adapt to less exercise depending on their living conditions.
Dogs are pack animals they like being with others in their own species. Sometimes dogs consider their family part of its pack, and sometimes a dog will consider themselves in the "human" pack, usually in a one dog family. The owner should establish themselves as the alpha or head of the pack. But I don't think dogs can't live a healthy life without the love or respect of their owners or pack.
