Adopting an All Breed Dog has a Positive Impact on Academic Performance

Kristen W. wrote the following essay, “Paybacks Can Be Hell” for her EN101 class.

I love my six-month-old beagle named Snoopy, however he is as stubborn as I am, and makes me pay dearly for what he sees as infractions. These slights include ignoring him or leaving him behind when I go to school. Several days ago, I arrived home from school to discover I was on Snoopy's wrong side, again.

That particular day started out as any other day, however, by the time classes were finished for the day and I arrived home, I knew there was trouble in paradise. When I walked in the front door, the customary greeting from Snoopy, through the opening in the half wall by the stairs, was missing. Snoopy was absent from his post. This was my clue that Snoopy had waged war, again. That little beagle was easy to find though, because he is a closet ostrich. His head was under the recliner. He did not understand that in order to hide, he needed to conceal himself completely, not just his head. That silly dog's tail wagged like crazy, as he celebrated his victory. Every schoolbook that was not in my possession, had been spread all over the house from one room to another.

Snoopy had managed to climb up onto my desk and drag, pry, or slide everything on it to the floor. He presumably thumped books and papers to the chair and then sent them crashing to the floor, leaving a telltale trail of slimy drool to exemplify his boldness and bravery, not to mention his displeasure with my absence. One by one, Snoopy had hauled each book down the hall. It seemed as if he had carefully chosen specific rooms for specific subjects. Make no mistake; my health book was face down in the kitchen and my English book was in the computer room. As Snoopy followed me, he sneered and pranced around as if to say, "Paybacks can be hell." He majestically perched on my English book and waited for me to ask for forgiveness. Upon my apology, everything became right with his world, and kisses and greetings ensued.
