IVAR  Performs:

  • Humane Investigations (Abuse/Neglect)

IVAR maintains humane investigators licensed by the State of Illinois.

Your report of abuse or neglect will remain fully anonymous at your request.

-  We can best serve the animal(s) in question if you provide us with your contact information, which

we may use to contact you for additional information, if needed.  If you not want us to contact you, please provide us with as many details about the situation as possible, including most importantly  the location of the situation and descriptions of the animals involved.  If you did not leave us your contact information , and do not see a change in the situation, please call us again as we may not have received your original message.

  • Wellness Checks

Animals who are exposed to extreme weather, dogs that appear thin or are left alone and injured stray cats, as examples, are eligible to receive wellness checks by IVAR employees. Wellness checks are situations where an animal needs to be looked upon, but may not necessarily fall under the state laws for abuse or neglect.

  • Adoptions of Cats and Dogs

The most rewarding part of IVAR's mission is to place animals into permanent, loving homes.

  • Providing Safety and Shelter for Stray Cats and Dogs

If you see a stray animal, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Please provide us with as much information as you can, and leave your contact information in case we need to ask you for additional details.

IVAR is a local volunteer group, not a government-run or funded agency. We try our best to help as many animals as possible, but we are limited by volunteer manpower and a lack of steady funding. With that being said, we are not able to immediately pick up every stray animal that is called in. We do our best to prioritize situations and provide a safe haven for the animals as soon as possible.  We appreciate your patience and understanding.

  • Owner Surrenders

Unfortunately, there are times when a pet’s owner can no longer care for them. In addition to stray animals,  IVAR tries to make itself available to these animals as well.   We are not able to immediately take in every animal, but we try our  best to make accommodations as quickly as possible.

If you feel you might need to surrender your pet, please call us before the situation is urgent.  Often, we can  point you towards resources that will allow you to keep your pet, whether your reasons for surrender are financial, behavioral, personal, etc.  If we are not able to help you through additional resources, this  will give us time to prepare for the possible arrival of your pet.  We also might be able to direct you towards other rescue groups that can help sooner, such as purebred dog or cat rescues.

Services beyond IVAR's Capabilities:

There are some things that IVAR does not do, but we encourage you to call us as we  may be able to provide you with information or resources to get the assistance you need:

  • Veterinary Services

We do not have a veterinary clinic at our shelter.  Our animals are vetted through clinics in the community.  We are unable to provide vaccinations or spay/neuter services.

  • Wildlife Issues

We do not have the training, facilities, or permits to assist with injured wildlife, or wildlife removal.  Please contact us and we will provide you with the contact information of agencies that can help, if possible.

  • Livestock Issues

We do not have the training or facilities to assist with livestock or large animals. Please contact us and we will provide you with the information of agencies that can help, if possible.
