History
The Stephens County Humane Society in Toccoa, Georgia was founded originally in 1987 and was active for several
years. At a certain point in time, the members resigned, moved and/or lost interest in keeping the organization
active. In 1995 Joan and Earl Allen decided to reactive the society and June Thompson became involved. Since
that time, we have built a kennel on private property and instituted a policy of spaying/neutering any animal put
up for adoption when we realized that only about 1/3 of the animals we adopted were actually being brought to
the veterinarian to be fixed even though the adoptee had paid for the process and been given a certificate to
have the spay/neuter done. We felt that the only way to address the tremendous overpopulation of unwanted
pets in Stephens County and surrounding areas was to make certain that any animal we adopted was already
fixed.
Mission Statement
The Stephens County Humane Society is committed to providing:
- Homes for animals which are unwanted and/or abandoned
These animals will be secured from animal shelters, animal rescue agencies and private individuals which demonstrate a need for treatment and placement
- Spaying and neutering, whenever practicable, all animals at our shelter and foster facility before adopting them to qualified homes
- Educating our community in the advantages of spaying and neutering pets
- Providing veterinarian care, inoculations, vaccines and tests for all animals which are accepted for adoptiong prior to adopting them to qualified homes.
- Maintaining a kennel with satellite foster homes which is a no-kill facility--we will keep all animals accepted until a home is found for them regardless of how long it takes.
Working together with other agencies and shelters we are confident that we will realize our mission and continue to achieve exceptional success as these commitments are met.
