The SPCA Now Has X-Ray Capability

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new, state of the art digital x-ray machine which will enable the SPCA to help more animals at low cost. Shown with the x-ray machine are our two full time vets, Dr. Michael Haney and Dr. Phillip Curry.  For more information, contact our clinic at 321-269-0536.

The S.P.C.A. Welcomes Dr. Michael Haney

Dr. Haney comes to us from the SPCA of Central Florida where he has worked during the past year. Prior to his work in Orlando, he spent several years in small animal practice at local veterinary hospitals. Dr. Haney is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, completing his internship at the Dodge City Veterinary Hospital in Denham Springs, LA. Prededing his acceptance into the degree program at Louisiana State, he completed a 25 year career with Delta Airlines in the customer service area. For many years prior to his entry into the degree program at Louisiana State, Dr. Haney volunteered with various animal care agencies and veterinarians as well as working part time as a veterinary technician.

Dr. Haney’s experience and customer service skills are sure to be an asset to our organization as we continue to expand our patient care capabilities.

Old heartworm test to be replaced by new, more comprehensive test.

The SPCA attempts to provide appropriate medical care for our client’s animals at the lowest possible costs. Our veterinarians continually review our products, vaccines, medications, and surgical procedures to ensure that we are staying current with existing standards established for animal care. Recently, Dr. Curry recommended that we begin using the SNAP 4DX Heartworm Test which tests for three tick borne diseases in addition to heartworm. His recommendation is based upon the desire to provide our clients with a diagnostic test generally accepted to be the definitive test for these potentially fatal diseases and the belief that we are seeing animals that may be infected with one of the diseases without our being able to properly diagnose the illness.

Although our desire is to keep costs as low as possible, there are times when a change in diagnostic capabilities makes it paramount to purchase a more expensive test for our client’s animals. The SNAP 4DX Heartworm Test is such a diagnostic tool and our vet’s both feel it is in the best interests of our clients to carry this test exclusively. Since the test itself is nearly twice as expensive as the standard heartworm test, we are forced to increase our prices on this procedure.

We believe we are holding our costs down at a better than average rate, but our expenses are increasing just as in every other business. Our Board is vigilant in assuring that our reputation as a low cost clinic remains intact and the Board members are involved in any price increases we implement. We have not raised prices on our services for quite some time now; our flea and tick products, on the other hand, are continually adjusted based upon manufacturer’s price increases which we have no control over. We anticipate having to increase our vaccination prices as well as some of the other services we offer on a walk in basis. The price increases are being delayed as long as possible, but it does not appear that we will be able to go through this summer without implementing these price changes.

The SPCA is dedicated to helping the animals in Brevard County live longer, healthier and happier lives. We attempt to do this by educating the public on the need for spaying and neutering, providing healthy animals for adoption, operating a low cost spay and neuter clinic, providing traditional veterinary services at the lowest cost in our area, and by making our surgery facilities available at no charge to other not-for-profit spay/neuter organizations for Sunday Spay/Neuter Clinics.

Our hope is that the people of Brevard County continue to support us in the manner which they have since our inception in 1979 and that we are able to continue to care for the animals in our county as we have for the past 29 years.
