SPONSOR A SPECIAL GOLDEN

Chess was an owner turn in back in March, she spent one month in the
animal aid center and arrived at my foster home 2 weeks ago at almost 6
years old, 111.2 lbs with a bacterial infection, mange, eye and ear
infections, hypothyroidism and a coat that was so matted that she had to
be shaved from behind her ears to where her tail begins.  What we found
after that were sores all over her belly and on the inside of her legs...I've never seen elbow callouses as big as what I found on this
little girl.  She's about 50 lbs overweight and can barely walk due to this weight, she can only stand for limited amounts of time and then has to sit or lay down.  You can't feel any bones on her there is so much at.  Her story is sad but seen very often, after 4 years of living with her family she was dropped off due to a family members allergies.  Her previous vet had recommended a thyroid profile but one was never done so
she continued to gain weight.  Her liver enzymes are elevated and I'm worried about that but we're going to tackle the other problems first and see if that helps the liver.  She's going to be a very expensive girl for the next month or so, that's for sure.

We started out walking very slowly to the stop sign which is 7 houses
away.  This entailed several rest stops in the beginning and now she can walk 4 blocks and back with one rest stop.  She lost 2 lbs the first week without any thyroid medication and now that she's on it I have high hopes for continued weight loss at a quicker speed.  I'm measuring her progress in days... each day more of her Golden personality comes out and she gains confidence and tries something new.  There's something to be said for that Golden spirit and

fortitude!  She plays, she's a joy to have around and gets along well with her canine foster brothers and wants nothing to do with her feline foster brother nor the bird.  She loves children and perks her ears up any time she hears their voices. She's well mannered, polite to an exceptional degree.

Chess is currently on the Green Bean Diet, move over South Beach!  This is a fabulous doggie diet and I've seen it work miracles firsthand.  I watched my first GRIN dog lose 56 lbs on that diet, he's a lean 74 lb guy now that you wouldn't recognize and he's just a bundle of energy and fun and acting like a complete puppy again.  Chess is taking to the diet a lot faster than Baxter did, she LOVES green beans and would rather eat them than the 3/4 cup of kibble that she is getting with her half can of green beans at breakfast and the same at dinner.  She's also getting Pet Tabs, Chondroitin & Glucosamine supplements and fish oil capsules.

What Does "Sponsor a Golden" mean?

Our organization is a full-service golden retriever rescue, which means that we take in, goldens and sometimes golden mixes ranging in age from very young to very old in need of rescue efforts. We help goldens that are in need of treatment for diseases or ailments such as heartworms, pneumonia, malnutrition, cancer, skin diseases…just to name a few. It is not unusual for our medical expenses, especially for seniors, to mount to several thousands of dollars.

Even if you cannot adopt one of our special goldens, you can help by sponsoring any golden listed on our adoptable dogs page. If you would like to sponsor one of our special goldens, simply make a donation in their name. 100% of your donation will go toward the care of the golden you have chosen to assist.
