FERAL CAT FACTS

Local Facts
(Manatee & Sarasota Florida)

The statistics for cats finding homes n our local shelters in 1997 were dismal.  Manatee Animal Control took in 4,076 cats and only adopted out 74!!! 72 cats were returned to their owners and a staggering amount, 3,063, were euthanized.

The combined figures for the Humane Society of Sarasota County and Sarasota Animal Services are better ... barely.  3,720 cats were taken in, 80 were returned to their owners, 1,023 were adopted and 2,251 were euthanized.

Is There a Better Way?

Clearly, the answer to the problem of pet overpopulation is NOT euthanasia.  Animal Control agencies use euthanasia as a solution to the problem of overcrowding in their shelters and never get to the heart of the problem of pet overpopulation.

ALLEY CAT RESCUE BELIEVES IN BREAKING THE REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE to reduce the enormous numbers of feral and stray cats in our community.

Modeled after successful programs in Europe and such U. S. cities as New Orleans, San Diego, Miami Beach and Washington, D. C., Alley Cat Rescue uses humane "Trap-Test-Vaccinate-Return" or TTVR method of animal control.  Through this method, cat populations are stabilized and, with the support of sympathetic neighborhood volunteers, these cats can live safely and peacefully within their territory.
