~ Introducing Barney! ~
This adorable little fellow is Barney, who we rescued on May 11, 2007. We had received a call that Barney was running loose in an area not far away from our home, and that neighborhood children were cruelly beating and mistreating him!
Once we found Barney, we discovered that he was severely matted and his coat was a terrible mass of painful stickers. Our first stop was to our veterinarian's office, where it was discovered that Barney had several horrendous injuries along his back and sides from the terrible beatings he had suffered. The doctor prescribed a course of antibiotics, and Barney underwent surgery a few days later to remove a badly infected tooth that had begun to work its way through his right cheek.
It was my hope to find Barney a wonderful new forever home once he had recovered from his injuries, but God in His wisdom had other ideas in mind. Because of all the terrible things that Barney was forced to endure, and the devastating insecurity that those horrors caused in him, he followed me everywhere, even curling up in my arms at night to sleep with his little head on my chest. He just stole my heart away! Fred never had a chance to meet Barney, but I know he would have loved him, too!
Barney also loves all the cats in the shelter, and he goes happily with me each day to feed and care for all the kitties.
It was clear that Barney felt he had found a home to call his own, a real place of safety and security at last. Since losing my precious Fred I hadn't planned on getting another dog, but it was sort of like Barney got ME, and I feel that he was Heaven Sent to our little family.
It hurts me so much to realize the abuse that Barney suffered and I hope to spend each day of my life trying to make it up to him. It is my prayer that his story will help people to realize the horrors of pet abuse and what they can do to make a difference for all the other little Barneys of this world.
